About the only thing that could have happened was he caught the outside of the exterior wall on fire and the fire department had to tear out the drywall and ceiling to make sure the fire wasn't inside the walls/ceiling.

Only explanation would be fire dept. But I don't see water. Or smoke damage. Or scorch marks.

Looks like something outside caught fire, and the water used to put it out messed up the interior of the home.

srvy
07-23-2016, 05:37 PM
That insulation backing is burnt. Total guess on my part but possibly the deck floor caught fire and traveled on to the outside wall then burned through exterior to interior and up in to interior ceiling. The insulation looks wet and the fire department concentrated there so not to allow to spread to other units. With this required cutting roof from outside and also ceiling inside. Of course this is just total speculation on my part.

If he did cause this, I guarantee his apartment/condo building had a violation about smoking or BBQ'ing anything on a patio that small.

He's gonna have a hard time fighting that one.

srvy

How it happens is charcoal bbqing on a wood deck. Lots of fires are started this way and many apartments do not allow anymore not sure about townhomes.

In a Condo/Apartment?

A propane grill usually is ok.

Charcoal or other means, usually not.

If it's a large complex, it's always in their lease that you can't have open fire/charcoal BBQ's because of safety and liability.

The fire flames isnt as hot but to charcoal is. The blacksmith smelted iron with coal and if he couldn't get fossil fuel coal he made charcoal from wood.

Sorry, I don't think it's funny. It's not being "self serious." A Chiefsplanet member had a significant fire at his home. He can't live there anymore.

If this were some beloved member of this board, people cracking jokes right now wouldn't be accepted.

Inmem is a human being, a husband, a father. I think when someone suffers a tragedy - and the loss of a home to fire is tragedy in my book - you don't crack jokes.

When I use my chimney starter I set a cookie on the ledge of the patio when a second round pizza cookie sheet on top of that one. This creates a gap between the cookie sheets. I set my chimney starter on top and light my coals. I did this numerous of times, with no issues.

I dumped the coals into my smoker around 9:30 and checked periodically on the temp. Apparently the cookie sheets got extremely hot and caught the side on fire. Like I said, I did this several times. I fucked up and should have removed the sheets back into the apartment.

Get everything wet you can out of there. If you don't, expect mold to grow rapidly. If you have a dehumidifier handy, use it 24/7 at least for a week. The smell from smoke will take some time to go away. Simple Febreeze works best.

Most important thing though is getting anything wet out. Mold sets in, total refurbishment will need to be done. You might be paying for a remodel anyway.

This is how I had my chimney starter. This caused the fire with no coals inside. Just the heat going through the cookie sheets to the wood.

You realize he's trolled many people on here, so they probably don't think he'd be butthurt by a few (funny i may add) jokes, right??

Yes, hence the reason I said if he were some beloved member of this board, people would be reacting differently.

I'm not here to white knight for Inmem. I just think it's classless. I'd be saying the same thing if it was you in his position.

It's one thing to make jokes when it's a news story and no one knows the people involved. It's another thing entirely, IMO, when it's a member of our little community here.

We disagree. That's fine. I dropped it.

I had a spare coal stick in the bottom of my chimney starter once, then drop onto the deck once it burned down small enough to fit through the grate on the bottom. Found a baseball size hole in my deck the next morning. Lucky it wasn't worse I guess.

Good point.. Ugh... And yeah, I'm not sure I wouldn't think that setup wouldn't be fine. Hell, I guess I'm lucky, even when not near a concrete driveway/tailgate asphalt, I've set my dumped-coals started in the decorative rocks around the house.

I'm still stunned that cool-down setup didn't work.

According to post 86 he had coals in the chimney on top of the cookie sheet resting on the deck.i think the coals brought the wood up to the ignition point but the fire just didn't become visible until after he dumped the coals into the smoker.

Coals in the chimney get incredibly hot. One time my chimney blew a chunk of concrete out of my driveway.

Correct, I dumped the coals and placed the starter back on the cookie sheets. Fire happened 2 hours after that.

Now I'm really confused. Were there lit coals in the chimney at any time while sitting on the cookie sheets?

We stood there not saying a word till one of the guys said "Well John always liked to smoke." I grilled a steak today and thought I might join the club. I flipped it over and it apparently had a bunch of juice pooled up on it. Suddenly a big fireball was headed toward my midsection. I leapt backward and fortunately didn't catch my t-shirt on fire or anything, but I've probably cooked 10,000 steaks in my life and never saw a fireball go out instead of up before. To answer a previous question, the complex would be well within their rights to keep your security deposit, if their fire insurance deductible is higher than your deposit.

If your deposit is more than their deductible, you should get the difference back if they are covered for loss of rents.

However if your complex is small, and you know the owner or something they might take pity on you.

Inmem, first off, I'm glad you and your family are ok. Now, having said that, you learned your lesson, but you shouldn't have had to. You don't ever, and I mean ever start coals over wood. Old wood, new wood, any wood. A small breeze could blow embers on the wood, hell, any number of things could happen. I'm actually surprised something like this didn't happen before. You really shouldn't be smoking on a deck patio at all, particularly a wood one. Sorry this happened man, but geez, I can't believe you did that.

I agree, after several times bqqing and smoking I thought I was good. I made sure the ash and lit embers were under control. I can't count the number of times I used this method. The Fire Marshall was a bit surprised as well. I showed him my setup and the steps I took to prevent any fires. The Arson investigator said in his exact words "this is a very strange fire".

My brother-in-law recently melted the vinyl siding on his house because his grill was too close. He was pretty lucky to not have started a fire. It's also why having fire extinguisher around is a good idea.

This type of fire is a bit rare, but understandable considering the season. It's best to let this sit and marinate for a bit until we can understand what Inmen is going through.

Glad to hear that you made it out okay, along with most of your stuff.

Sorry, but I'm out of anything witty to say.

Locally, we had a fire chief lose his house to a very strange fire a couple of years ago. He put out his last cigarette for the night and emptied the ashtray into a metal coffee can. A windy night blew the can over. His still half-lit cigarette had ignited some of the other butts and when the wind knocked the can over, some got caught between his wooden upper deck boards. They ignited the deck and eventually, the flame burned through the hose on the grill's propane tank. The resultant blow torch then caught the wood siding on fire and quickly spread to the end of the house. It took a little time, but eventually, the flames and smoke made it to the interior, which set off the smoke alarms.

I have been thinking about Inmen58's fire. I have melted aluminum (melts at 1221 F) cans in many a camp fire. I have no question that even through two metal cookie sheets, a chimney full of coals could bring the surface of the wood up to 500 F which is hot enough for it to ignite. The pan in contact with the wood is pretty flat and would make good contact with the wood; it is also an excellent conductor of heat. I'm sure every one who has watched a campfire has seen a piece of wood not in the flames get very hot until it burst in to flames without ever coming in contact with flames from the main fire. Same thing could happen here.

The part I am struggling with is the supposed gap it time between when the coals were removed and the fire started. It would seem that 2 hour is enough time for the heat to dissipate. I'm wondering if the wood actually started burning when the coals were in the chimney, but the flat bottom pan prevented much oxygen from reaching it. The oxygen starved fire just kind of turned the wood under the pan to charcoal, generating enough heat to keep the fire going at a low level. It finally burnt to the point to open an oxygen pathway at which point it burnt into flames? Just hypothesis forming at this junction. Really interesting.

Also, if the pan were in contact with a nail you could easily generate much hotter temperatures in the wood around the nail. Could start a very small oxygen starved fire around the nail that may take along time to burst into flames. Again, just a hypothesis.
