View Full Version : Chiefs Was Sean Smith benched today by the Raiders?

Mr. Flopnuts

I'm reading it all over the internet. He gave up a 98 yard TD, and was benched in the 2nd half. Can anyone confirm?

Put a 6'2" CB on a 5'10" WR and you're likely to have problems. Oakland had him pressing the line but never jamming Cooks. Not smart football.

They were going to keep him, but had no realistic shot to match what Oakland was offering.

Raiders do not have good safeties lol. Looks like the Reggie Nelson+Sean Smith combo is a bust in the making, two fools gold players that benefited from two of the better front 7 rosters in the league.

Week 1 / Dorsey is a genious for letting Smith go. Smith sux and can't keep up with a speedy receiver.

Andy Reid, though, I failed to account for. He had this talent in Philadelphia, too. Knowing exactly when to release players.

Of all the players the Chiefs have let walk on Reid's watch, who hasn't busted? Brandon Albert, who has struggled with his health.

Yeah not sure that even if he had the money Dorsey would have signed Smith at the price he signed with Oakland. You have to be very careful with giving big money to a player who could decline at anytime going forward (being a big-bodied CB).

Dorsey is not giving money easy, we can see that.

Agreed. He fit the scheme or the scheme fit him very well and he was very good in our defense.

This is what happens when you go out and poach other teams players and don't look to see how they fit into your scheme though. Maybe they didn't care, and just wanted to hurt their rival. :: shrug ::

I am not sad... Raiders have a helluva lot to clean up on D but I think they have the talent to do so.

When you are lined up one on one with the box stacked you don't let a wr come off the line without a hit... That cooks guy was never touched and you are going to get torched most of the time unless you have somebody coming through the line fast to apply pressure to the QB... Brees is a great qb and they should have had some help for sean regardless... If you are not getting pressure on the qb most of the wr in the nfl are going to get open.

I am disappointed in the D play overall but the game was won anyway but that stuff won't fly against better teams

5. Sean Smith, CB, Oakland Raiders

Since being torched by Brandin Cooks and the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, Smith has been improving, and he was basically a shutdown corner this week against the Titans in Oakland’s win. Only a poor run grade keeps him away from the very top grades, as he was trucked a couple of times by blockers when trying to support against the run. In coverage, however, he caught as many passes (one) as he allowed Titans receivers to catch on seven targets, surrendering just 19 yards.https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-10-best-individual-performances-from-sundays-week-3-action/

If you watch the games you would understand why I do not put the whole blame on Smith... Hell we can't put pressure on the QB and he has all day to throw... Few CB's can thrive in that situation... I haven't seen the Faid this year. What's going on with their front 7? Why aren't they getting pass rush after how good they were last year? How is Mack performing? He's supposed to be better than Houston according to your fans. What's the deal?

Honestly? I think they got a case of the big head especially Mack & Irvin

If you watch the games you would understand why I do not put the whole blame on Smith... Hell we can't put pressure on the QB and he has all day to throw... Few CB's can thrive in that situation... I am not taking up for the guy because I will be the first to admit our defense sucks and the guys bought into the hype and forgot they still have to play D... With the Raiders O they don't need to be a top 10 D to have a very good year Just middle of the pack would be good...

It varies. Smith did all his damage on one catch (50+ yards and a TD on that one catch), which would have been a fairly short one except for the really bad missed tackle by Amerson.

7. Sean Smith, CB, Oakland Raiders

Smith took some considerable lumps early in the season, and at one point, was even benched. Since then, however, few corners in the NFL have been better. Over the first two weeks of the season, he surrendered 250 yards and three touchdowns. In the 11 games since, he’s yielded only 346 yards and one touchdown. The Raiders still have some issues defensively, but they haven’t been because of Smith.

I know we couldn't really afford him, but I wonder if part of the reason he wasn't brought back is because of how he doesn't match up against the small quick twitch guys like on the patriots? He's still a very good corner, but that is a huge weakness in his game. And I'm sure we anticipated Gaines playing more consistent and staying somewhat healthy

In what game has be been great? QBs seek him out on basically every pass and complete a very high percentage on him.

The fact that our right side is so weak had alllwrd QBs to stop throwing at Peters has reduced his chances at interceptions. When Smith was here, even though QBs knew Peters was a ball hawk, they were still forced to throw in his direction because Smith was so good on the other side.

Hey look at #3 Eric Weddle...the guy everyone on CP said was washed up and not a "team player"

No one said that.

Where were you when Weddle was getting toasted by Chris Hogan and trucked by Blount?

I miss Sean Smith. Nelson and Gaines have been beaten like drums throughout this season. When Smith was here, the right side of the field was locked down and QBs rarely there his way. Now the right side is a weakness for this team.
Posted via Mobile Device

In what game has be been great? QBs seek him out on basically every pass and complete a very high percentage on him.

The fact that our right side is so weak had alllwrd QBs to stop throwing at Peters has reduced his chances at interceptions. When Smith was here, even though QBs knew Peters was a ball hawk, they were still forced to throw in his direction because Smith was so good on the other side.

I agree. These new corners blow dicks, but letting Smith walk was the best move, IMO.

I don't mind letting him go, but we do need to make CB2 a priority this off season. Nelson isn't good and even if Gaines has the potential to be good, he can't stay healthy.

Where do we find one? I assume Dorsey would have spent the necessary coin on one if we had the cash. It's probably going to be the same situation this year.

Even if we spend a top draft pick on a rookie, it's not like every 1st rounder is a guaranteed Marcus Peters. We may still yet be opting for a player currently on our roster over the new blood we bring in.

Nelson hasn't been too bad. People tend to remember him getting beat on short throws to give up yards but don't remember the big plays like him punching the ball out of Mike Evans and Seth Roberts hands to save TD's.

I've been impressed with Nelson in the slot. Granted my initial opinion on him as a player wasn't super high, and he's given up a few plays early, but he's seemed to play well as of late.

Just think, if the Chiefs had overpaid a 29 year old cornerback instead of going with cheaper players on the roster who have serious upside, they might be 10-3 with the #2 overall seed.

Players will be cut and I didn't say we had to spend a #1 pick on him.

It's not hard to see that the vast majority of the yards we give up are to the right side of the field. Winston, Semien, Ryan all made the vast majority of their 300+ yards against Nelson and Gaines.

Nelson has been great. What games are you watching?

He was good last week but great all season is a huge stretch. He doesn't break on the ball nor does he locate the ball. Same with Gaines. They are the reason why the 3rd down defense has struggled. #2 corner is a huge need this off season.

Stephone Gilmore has quietly had a really good season in Buffalo, he'll be a FA. Maybe we can free up enough cash?

It was the nickname of some douchebag receiver the Eagles had in the mid-2000s. His name was Freddie Mitchell, IIRC.

But yeah we need to draft another CB. Gaines has really fallen off this year and he's made of glass.

Well, yeah. Our entire team was trash in 2012.

Arenas never had the size or speed to play on the outside anyway. He was quick which is why he was decent in the slot and a good returner but could never make any house calls.

Was it possible to have a bad day against Fitzpatrick and Carr last week? Carr couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat last week. He had a historically bad game. You could have been at corner and held your WR to what Nelson held his WRs to.

Yeah other than that game against the Chargers I don't remember him taking 1 to the house. It was a terrible 2nd round pick but atleast we got a nice piece for him.even though Sherman is useless now.

Some of you guys are ****ing hilarious comparing Steven Nelson to Javier Arenas. Nelson is easily better.

Nelson is a first year starter and has 14 passes defended and has saved 2 TD's. He's not as bad as many of you guys are saying ROFL

Give the kid time. Look at Dee Ford and how he changed from early in his career to now.

We're going to fix the problem the Dorsey way. Bring in a bunch of dudes and have them compete. Mitchell will be one of those possible options, probably against a rookie or two.

Just because Marcus Cooper looked great his first 4-5 games for us doesn't mean Mitchell is Marcus Cooper, though

Biggest miss: You could say cornerback Sean Smith, who got a four-year, $38 million deal with $20 million guaranteed last spring, should be here, considering Smith got benched in his first game with the Raiders. Plus, as PFF noted, Smith’s passer rating allowed on throws into his coverage of 111.5 was the highest of all cornerbacks who played at least 75 percent of their team’s snaps. And the seven touchdowns allowed and 17.7 yards per catch average was also a league high for those corners.

Nelson has the tools but I think he has focus/motivation issues.

He's like glue one game and lost the next.

Maybe he can put it together with more playing time, but as of now I think Dorsey can easily find someone to push him down the roster if he doesn't get more consistent.

That whole defense sucked last year! They got better through the year but still were below average. They gave up the most yards in a 2 game stretch in league history(1st two games of the season). SS is apart of that defense so to put the blame completely on him isn't right!

That team still went 12-4. I bet they will be focusing on improving the defense this year and if they do they will be a tough team to beat!

What a strange take on Nelson. I see no reason to think he has focus/motivation issues. The only time he was "inconsistent" was when he was asked to line up outside. He was solid all year when playing NB, and that's really all we need from him. Mitchell will be the RCB.
