View Full Version : Chiefs Had a cool email exchange with Bob Moore

Chiefs have a guy named Bob Moore who is the official team historian, and oversees the Chiefs Hall of Honor. He was the PR guy for a long time before Ted Cruz took over that role.

Anyway, here's a story. My dad passed away in 2011. He was a huge Chiefs fan, and got season tickets starting in 1967. My family has had the same ticket account with the Chiefs ever since. So, 50 years now. He retired with my mom and moved to Hot Springs, AR in 1993. When he got to Arkansas, he soon learned just about everyone in Arkansas is a Cowboys fan, because Jerry Jones is an Arkansas guy. The Cowboys games are on TV in Little Rock every single week.

Sometimes the Chiefs games were on Little Rock TV. He would videotape every game. If the game was not on TV in Little Rock, I'd tape it for him here in KC then mail the game to him, so he'd get to watch it on Wednesdays. We did this all the years he lived down there.

Last June, my mom -who is still down there- moved out of the house into assisted living. She's in her 80's now. We had to start boxing up stuff in the house, and I found my dad had saved all these tapes of Chiefs games dating back to 1990 when he still lived in KC. It was an amazing treasure trove of video. DeBerg, Montana, Bono, Elvis, Gannon, Green, Huard. Marty, Gunther, Vermeil, Herm. Lots of Marcus, DT, Neilbonics, Priest Holmes, LJ, Young Bowe, etc. And news footage of DT's death, Lamar Hunt's death, King Carl getting whacked, Marty resigning, just all kinds of stuff.

So anyway, in July I had to have eye surgery and wasn't allowed to work or drive for two weeks. So I got busy transferring all these old games and such from VHS over to DVDs. I have a bunch of Macs at home, and set two of them up dedicated to just transferring. There was somewhere between 75 and 100 tapes. Got them all transferred.

Well, I really had no need for the tapes any more, and I was going to throw them out. But then I thought maybe the Chiefs would like to have them. So I sent an email to Bob Moore and asked him if he'd like to have the tapes. He sent me back an email saying absolutely! So in the next couple days I'll be sending them off to Arrowhead. I think my dad would have liked that.

There's a lot of great commercials in that batch too. And stuff like a young Frank Boal, Gretz, Keitzman, etc doing local news reporting. I hope they find a use for some of the footage.

So what would a guy need to do to get copies of the games? And that's very cool, I hope they use them as well.

The 1997 WC game needs to be YT'd for posterity just to demonstrate how fucking loud Arrowhead used to be.

I didn't have enough room in my car to bring back all the tapes my dad had. So a lot of the bad losses I left behind. A few of the tapes wouldn't play. The Kicker Who Shall Remain Nameless game, I have the tape but can't get it to play. I think God has decided that sitting through that abortion in person is enough. But I have the Monday Night Meltdown game where DT lost his mind; I have the "no punts" play off loss to Manning, two playoff losses to Miami, the playoff loss to San Diego, and playoff wins against Pittsburgh at Arrowhead and vs. Houston Oilers where Cash spikes the ball into Buddy Ryan's face.

From watching a lot that footage, there's lots of players who were very, very good who don't get much love now. Just off the top of my head Willie Davis, John Alt, Kimball Anders, Eddie Kinneson, Dale Carter, Dan Saleamua, Joe Phillips, Tracy Simien, Benny Thompson, James Hasty, Todd McNair, all very good players in their day.

I bought a couple of those big DVD leather zipper binder things that hold like 300 discs. I filled two of them between my dad's stuff and my stuff. I've been recording games here since 2011, so I have some Todd Haley, some Romeo, and lots of the Andy Reid stuff. Haley and Romeo years were so bad, I didn't save many of those games, because who wants to watch the team get its ass kicked over and over?

Few months ago I was pining for the 2003 version of EK as a part of the current receiving corps.

There'd be very few sources for Alexcuses if his top four receiving options on the majority of his snaps were Maclin, EK, Kelce and Charles/Ware out of the backfield.

I'm pretty sure he only did that once, and Marty told him to never do that again.

I've got the Raider game where Tim Brown got picked by the ref, and Hasty ran the INT back for a TD to win in OT, and Marty ran down to the end zone and kissed him.

Don't want to lose a game because some soccer reject can't be counted on to put it within the uprights? Score more TDs.

The kicker who will remain nameless trilogy of shame. I remember Neil Smith taking off his helmet and beating it against the concrete wall in the tunnel at the end of that game.

I still have the tape of the 93 playoff game against Pitt... Tim Barnett caught the TD to tie the game right in front of the wife and I in our front row endzone seats... The TV cameras caught our celebration... A cherished memory...

my wife and i used to tape every game to watch during off seasons.

once the dvd/dvr technology took over we didn't need to anymore but we still had dozens of old vhs tapes.

sadly we finally decided a couple years ago during storage room cleanup time, it was time to let em go. sad day it was...

I was trying to find Boerigter's 99 yard TD against the Chargers in 2002 on YouTube a few weeks ago, couldn't find it anywhere. Might be a task, but is there any way you could upload that? That's some serious Chiefs history right there, and it has some sentimental value for me personally for other reasons. I was at that game and it's etched into my memory but if you could find it that would be amazing.

Being one of the younger ones on here, that's one of my top 3 at-the-game memories, along with the 2006 Thanksgiving game, and setting the dB record against the Raiders (that game was the first date with the girl I'm gonna marry).

So that's who "Rufus Dawes" was

Carl Peterson once said that Rufus Dawes was his favorite Civil War General. I think the Rufus column on the Chiefs website back in the day was probably a combo of Carl and Bob Moore ghost writing. That's just a guess, but since Bob was the main PR guy back them, Rufus was always a mouthpiece for the regime.

I sure wish I could watch the 1997 Chiefs vs. 49'ers game again. I recall the Chiefs were the underdogs at Arrowhead and sacked the daylights out of Steve Young.

And then the Raiders game later that year where we beat the living hell out of Jeff George.

Good times.
