View Full Version : Food and Drink -- Talk to me about Mugs-Up and NUWAY loose-meat burger sandwiches!

I've not been to either - however I make a nice loose-meat sandwhich w/ equal parts of ground chuck to yellow chopped onion - both are destroyed to tiny pellets - then - steamed bun (standard bun, small), yellow mustard and kraft singles. I was out of pickles today when I made them again - I use a seasoned salt and a bit of black pepper as my only seasonings.

Somehow I never tried either spot!

For those of you that have gone - let's discuss them, how are they? what do you order? is the service good as well? (friendly employees, etc, etc)

fries?
onion rings?
drinks?
sweets?

Speaking of loose meat sammy's, I had a Bierock sandwich this weekend at Harry's Country Club in the river market. It's ground beef, onion, and cabbage, all wrapped up in a fully enclosed "bun". It comes with an au jus to dip it in. Will smash many more times.

No sir! I had just remembered Grandma Grace making them and calling them New Way (NUWAY) burgers back in the day. I did some research and remembered there was actual establishments in KC that offered these burger sandwiches.

I am the poster boy for Independence, and I know all about loose meat. I mean that in the most positive way.

Mugs Up makes the zip burger (loose hamburger sandwich with special spices) and the Whizz Burger, which adds a dollup of cheez whizz.

The Root Beer is some of the best in the USA. Don't miss it.

Maid-Rite is an old burger chain. The nearest one to KC is in Lexington, MO. I go there a lot, as I was married in Lexington and have a lot of friends there.

Nu-Way was a burger chain mostly in the Northern US, like in Iowa, Nebraska, etc.

I think Nuway steams their meat with onions to a fine texture. Use yellow mustard and hamburger dill slices on the bun.

My grandfather worked at the original Nuway on West Douglas in Wichita as a teenager in the 30's. He quit after receiving a $19.95 tip on a 5 cent pack of bubblegum. ;)

Nu Way is a Wichita original. Sandwiches are tasty with a little added salt. Mustard, onion and pickle only. The BBQ/western is good also if you like KC Masterpiece. They have a fried pork fritter sandwich called the Tip-Top is is stellar. Chili is kind of weak. Hot dogs are served on butter toasted top load buns they are really good. Fries are blah but the onion rings with a few shots of Tabasco are the perfect match to any of their sandwiches. The fucking Root Beer in a frosted mug is the best.

SR ever try Freddys Frozen Custard?

Yes if you mean Freddy's Steakburgers, we just got one last year in Atlanta. I DID try them - the custard is good - I think I prefer Steak & Shake to Freddy's burgers though - from a price versus value perspective. Steak & Shake burgers are slightly better IMO & much cheaper. :)

I will have to bow out of this choice and respect the classical stance of "to each their own" on this matter.

Cooking definitely evaporates a couple of volatile oils in onions and garlic. That same thing that brings tears to your eyes when you cut them up is what tears up sensitive stomachs. Not nearly as much of a problem with cooked, though.
