The Vikings announced Wednesday night that coach Mike Zimmer would undergo emergency eye surgery that could cause him to miss Thursday night's game.

The surgery, which was to take place late Wednesday night, was the third for the third-year head coach this month. The previous two were on Nov. 1 and Nov. 8.

"His status for coaching [Thursday's] game is uncertain," General Manager Rick Spielman said in a statement. "I have met with the coaches and players and we have a contingency plan in place if Mike is unable to coach against Dallas."

The Vikings say they will provide an update on his health Thursday morning. Kickoff for their game against the Cowboys at U.S. Bank Stadium is 7:25 p.m.

Zimmer, 60, first underwent a procedure to fix a torn retina in his right eye on Nov. 1, a day after scratching it during a loss to the Chicago Bears. Edina-based opthalmologists Dr. David Williams and Dr. Scott Sanderson performed that procedure, Zimmer said, and he was back at Winter Park later that afternoon.

"They said if you don't take care of those things that you have a possibility of going blind," Zimmer, wearing a pair of dark sunglasses, said the following day.
A week later, Zimmer revealed that he had "another thing done" and was "okay."

In the event that Zimmer is unavailable to coach Thursday night, the Vikings, who have lost five of their past six games to fall to 6-5, have a pair of former NFL head coaches on staff in interim offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and offensive line coach Tony Sparano.

--Zimmer is well liked by other coaches around the league. Also by many in town. I would not want to have that done to me either.

Who cares? You don't need to see to coach. Andy Reid had to be coaching with his eyes closed Sunday night to not throw a challenge flag. (Yes I'm still aggravated about that)

Zimmer is a douchelord that's a self-entitled Parcells clone. He's a defensive minded version of Todd Haley. He ran off one the best offensive minds in the history of the NFL for another failed flunkie.

Either Tony fucking Sparano or Pat Shurmer will act as head coach.

I feel sorry for the tax payers of Minnesota that were duped into a $1 billion dollar stadium by the clowns.

Or he could be a ref for the evening. Those pricks have to be blind not to call all of the offensive holding that Stephenson was doing Sunday night.

How did a coach scratch a retina during a game? Were his eyes bugging out real big on a play or something?

based off that picture.. there's no way he scratched it.. he must have rubbed his eye very hard in frustration to tear his retina.. damn.

You can tear your retina, or get a fissure in it by applying sudden pressure to the eye.

My dad had to have his retina fixed and the recovery procedure is: they put a gas bubble in the center of your eye and you have to lie face down (so the bubble rests against the back of your eye) 23 hours a day for 5 days

Seriously. There's a service that rents those sitting massage chairs for a week to people who have the procedure done.

Poor dude.

Had a similar experience . My vision in my right eye went to zero one day at the office. Girls drove me to ophthalmologist. Had an infection in optic nerve . I'll admit it, it was herpes. ( Pile on if you want) He said he sees a case like mine every ten years. He called in his junior associates to the treatment room. They had never seen this. Damn scary. Prescribed systemic antiviral and antiviral drops. Vision now at 50%. He says this may be as good as it gets. Infection left scar directly in my field of vision. Haven't been practicing. Bad days.

Everyone has herpes. It hides in our nerves. Sometimes stress activates the infection.

An oriental chick from the Glitter Gulch in downtown Vegas gave me a left hook with her pencil eraser nipples. I got an infection in that eye.

My vision is 20/15 now, but damn that was scary.

Wow. I went through this same thing in July. I was diagnosed at 6pm and had my surgery done at 7am the next morning. It's a serious deal, you can permanently lose the sight in your eye if it isn't fixed. If he's had to have three procedures done, it means that his tear may have been worse than mine, or he didn't follow his doctor's post-op instructions, maybe both. I had to basically do nothing for two weeks after my surgery. I just had my three month post op checkup on Tuesday, and so far, I'm doing OK. I hope things turn out healthy for Zimmer, it's very scary to not be able to see. It certainly got my attention.
