Ten Things About Tonight’s Game: Week 14

10. On Monday I found out my best friend Gary flew back from the Atlanta Game with a nasty sinus infection. Sunday Night my wife was hacking up fur balls and sounded like Tom Waits. Both were supposed to go to the game with me tonight. Both begged off. So instead of sitting in the freezer, I sold my seats to Wazu, who took his son, and sold the other ticket to another CPer Boise Chief, who had a battle with American Airlines to get out of Dallas in time to watch the game tonight. Hope they enjoyed the seats.

9. I put a frozen lasagna in the oven, a fire in the fireplace, a couple rocks in a glass filled with Crown Royal and Lemonade (try it, it’s tasty) and sat back and enjoyed the game in my La-Z-Boy with Meesh Meesh the Cat in my lap. It would have been great to be there, but it was nice to enjoy the game without freezing to death. And I was glad that a couple of our CP brethren got to attend in my stead. KC has won eight straight division games, and are now “tied” with the Faid for the AFC West at 10-3, although we’ve now swept them. So it's not really a tie. So nice to win a game like this in front of a national TV audience, especially after we got embarrassed by Pittsburgh earlier this year. Great for the city, and it looks like the stadium was packed. Fans get a game ball this week as they also caused a game changing false start on Oakland in their last drive. More on that later.

8. This game was a classic game of momentum shifts. When the game started, the KC defense gets a three and out, then Hill muffs a punt that sets the Raiders up. Defense stiffens, only gives up three. Hill gets redemption by catching a beautiful TD pass and then breaking an even prettier punt return for another TD and a 21-3 lead. Then KC decided to go into a shell and stop scoring, and the defense had to win the game. Again, more on that later.

7. Neither Alex Smith or Derek Carr had what you could call a good game. Let’s talk about Alex first. Alex had one good quarter, the second quarter. He was awful in the third quarter. In the third quarter he threw a pick on his second pass, which turned the game momentum; defense holds and give up only three. On the next drive Alex fumbles; defense holds and Oakland punter King can’t get the ball placed so the Raiders lose a chip shot field goal attempt. Then in the third possession, Smith can’t get the plays called and takes a delay of game, killing the next drive. On a positive for Alex, he threw for 264 yards, averaged over ten yards a completion and had passes to Conley, Maclin and Kelce that were over 15 yards. Alex was only sacked once. He ran for a big first down in the fourth quarter. Biggest plus for Alex is he is now 9-1 in his career vs. Oakland. But he could not drive the team to score after the second quarter, and he got no points from the defense this week. The KC defense holding Oakland to two field goals was the difference. Oakland having to drive to score eight to tie at the end instead of five to win -if they would’ve converted the muffed field goal- was also huuuuge. Changed the entire complexion of the final five minutes.

6. Carr is still a puppy, and this is the first really big game under a bright national spotlight that he’s played in. His stats were terrible. 17 for 41 for 117 yards. That’s under three yards per completion. He was sacked once and had a QB rating of 49.1. Murray offset his crappy passing night by running for 103 yards, over 4.5 per carry. He got the only Oakland TD right at the end of the half on a drive sustained by a dubious DPI. Carr certainly didn’t look like a league MVP QB tonight. He missed lots of open receivers and generally looked rattled by the pass rush and the weather.

5. Kelce had 101 yards. He’s only the third tight end to have four 100 yard games in a row, the other two being Tony Gonzalez as a Chief, and Graham in New Orleans. Most of Kelce's yards are on YAC. Tyreek Hill tied the all time Chiefs rookie record for TD receptions with Chris Burford and Stephone Paige. West contributed with the only rushing TD. Ware did not have a great game until the very last carry. He only had 56 yards on 20 carries, averaging less than three yards a carry. But he made the final first down to ice the game by an eyelash on a tough never give up run. Like last week against Atlanta, it allowed the offense to kneel on the ball and kill off the clock.

4. Special teams was mixed. Hill’s fumble out of the gate hurt. His electric TD later made amends. Too many other punt returns that Hill made were called back for holding or block in the back penalties. That had a lot to do with the offense sputtering in the second half. Unsung hero on specials was Colquitt. He punted five times and all five punts pinned Oakland inside the 20 to give them a long field. This was perhaps the key to the win that most folks don’t consider.

3. DJ’s injury is a ruptured achillies. He’s done for the year. He went down without any contact, which is exactly what happened to him when he blew out his achillies against Tennessee a couple years ago. This one could be a career-ender. Hope not, but it sure didn’t look good. The Roach-Hyphen came out for back spasms, and with Howard and Bailey being out for the year, KC is getting very lean on the D-Line. DJ’s injury could be as critical to KC long term fortunes as Gronk’s is to New England. DJ is the QB of our defense. He’s a run stopper. Wilson had some moments, but he dropped a pick, and got ran over by Murray several times in the second half. Peters played another great game, although he got torched bad in the fourth quarter by Cooper and Carr overthrew him. Nelson played well and got called for a very dubious DPI that made Andy blow his stack. And who the HELL is Terrance Mitchell? I don’t know but he had five tackles and the biggest pass defense of the game.

2. Raiders were the Raiders, killing themselves with 82 yards in penalties. My two favorites: When Hill ran the punt back, he lost his mouth guard on around the five yard line. King, the Raider punter who got juked out of his jock, picked it up, took it into the end zone and threw it at Hill for a taunting penalty. How Raiders stupid is that? But the best one was a false start inside two minutes to make a fourth and one a fourth and six. Raiders tried to burn Peters on third and one from the 14; Peters got his hand on the ball to flick it away. So on 4th and one, Chris Jones and a rabid crowd forces an Oakland lineman -the most expensive offensive line in the NFL- to jump off sides and make it 4th and six. They pick on Mitchell, who flicks the pass away beautifully. Chiefs get the ball on their own 19 with just under two minutes left, and kill the clock. Game ball to the crowd for hanging in there in the cold, and helping the defense by turning fourth and one to fourth and six. That could mean an eventual AFC West Championship.

1. So we get a few extra days to rest, but the rest of the season is not easy by any stretch. Tennessee is a game we cannot overlook. They’re also in a division battle and they came in here even before they had Mariota a couple years ago on opening day and kicked our ass. Denver would love to ruin our Christmas, and Phyllis would love to ruin our New Years. The Chiefs can control their own destiny the rest of the way. But if we’re going to do anything special this year, we’ve got to have more production from the offense, and we’ll have to find a way to soldier on without DJ. In any case, it was great to sweep those Greasy Raiders and send them home with a road loss. I hope they have to change planes in Dallas on the way home tonight!

Since I sat in George's seats, I am going to add one more "thing" to the list.

11. Andy Reid gets it. After the game, on his way out, he was emotional. He was pointing and shouting at the crowd "YOU DID THAT! THAT WAS YOU!" over and over all the way out and down into the tunnel until he was out of sight. While it was over-the-top, the emotion behind it and the connection with just the small group of fans in ear shot was pretty incredible. Not surprising that he is able to inspire players and build the kind of team culture that he does.

And one more.

12. The "Ty-REEK" chant is going to be a thing at Arrowhead. Right after the penalty that gave him a second chance, the crowd broke out into a loud "TY-REEK" chant. The players on the sideline loved it and were pumping the crowd up to be louder. And then he ran the damn thing back. The chant returned every time Hill had a chance.

Good write up George. One little point. Alex fumbled because Eric Fisher got beat immediately by one of the two best pass rushers on the planet. Second some blame/credit has to go to the adjustments the Raiders made in the second half.

Awesomeness! Glad you got those hot seats to keep your butt warm in the cold but I doubt you sat down much at all. Kudos for that 4th and one turning it into 4th and 6 false start was imo one of the greatest moments in Chief Raider rival history because it was in our house and we made them flinch with the game on the line.

But you know what Fisher played good most of the game except I think he did have one penalty but his blocking was good to keep Alex upright most of the game and I saw him with a couple pancakes. For being "one of two best pass rushers on the planet" he didn't really do all that much now did he?

Also I think we need to put Dee Ford on the right tackle he was making stride in his pass rush but it's harder for him to adjust facing the left tackle so I think some tweaking is in order to do that.

Kelce started vertical leaping once the Tyreek chant hit a crescendo. Then I saw Hill pound his chest twice and I thought "Yep. Dude's going to house this one".

I don't mind a coach being aggressive but I didn't like Andy going for it in short field goal range in the 1st quarter. I think you tie it up there instead. It would have made the end of the game a little more comfortable.

DAT in on kickoffs either needs to break the 30 yard line or take a knee in the endzone so we can start on the 25. I mean I know he is no Tyreek Hill in returns but come on man don't be like Knile Davis.

I agree with this and it seemed forced and out of character unlike last week was unexpected and it through the Falcons off guard it didn't affect the Raiders the same way and it kind of back fired in that terms.

So I agree we not need get so cute.

When we do it make it count if anything.

Ok so I only saw the highlights as the game was like 4am here and I have work Friday. But Alex looked damn good in those highlights. Interesting that you've got him marked as a mixed bag - ok yes an Int but looked like he wore his big boy pants today and stepped up. The fumble looked to be 100% on Fisher

On tyreek's return TD as soon as he got that first block I sai "he's gone" and there it was, just an unbelievable returner. Is he better than Dante? Stupid stupid drop however.

Kelce looked great also

It's tough to tell what was SUPPOSED to happen, but Maclin was flat footed and nearly at a stop when the CB stepped into the passing lane for the INT.

It was far enough away from Maclin to suppose that he wasn't expecting it and Alex wasn't supposed to throw, and close enough to suppose that Alex threw to a spot and Maclin gave up.

Tipped balls

We had some seriously golden opportunities to snag some tipped balls out ~mid air~ but they slipped out of fingertips oh daganabbit so close that could seal the deal instead of letting the Raiders in it until the very close to the end.

We prevailed but I think we had some missed opportunities that we need to get our hands on next time but we also missed DJ a lot and they started to run over us without him.

My question is does the ball have to cross the los in order for the refs to throw the flag on a pass? Alex stepped over the line but got back and then threw it but the ball never crossed over it. Fortunately Chiefs got a play off and Raiders happened to Raider so they couldn't challenge the play but I thought they would have won a challenge with passing across the line of scrimmage.

Also why wouldn't it have been delay of game when that fuqtart Raider trapped the ball and acted like he got an INT then ran it all the way to the end zone after the refs were blowing the whistle incomplete? At any rate he should have been flagged for being a fuqtart dipshit.

The rule is that if any part of the passer is still behind the line it's legal. Nothing to challenge.

I'm the WORST at numbers. I can differentiate players better by body type and movement than remembering or even noticing all their numbers.

Exceptions for 58 and 90 [past] and 50 and 11 [present]. And to tell the truth, 1/2 the reason I know Alex is 11 is all the AS11 references here.

For instance, was Montana 7 or 11? Couldn't tell you.

Nice to see Reid with emotions.

It should be noted though that Faid lost this one more than we won it. I mean yeah,Alex fisted them for a quarter and the defense did a lot of good things, but man, Carr played like dog balls. And Cooper missing that wide open one? ROFL those bitches choked HARD. In prime time.

But the bottom line is we swept those pillow biters. And we are undefeated in the division. And we are done on the road except for the Dolts. We better sweep the damn division.

It's pretty inexplicable that we are doing what we are doing with total offense, total defense, offensive and defensive efficiency in the 20s while everyone is saying turnovers and we lose the TO battle 3-0. Hopefully it is just our time.

We did make some clutch plays in the fourth quarter to seal it but it was again too close for comfort. That Kelce play 30+ yarder in the fourth quarter was something we needed in a bad way and the defense holding them to field goals when in fact they could have walked on in with the running game. We got some rabbit trick to keep winning these things but we are winning them nonetheless so I'm happy. Just got to keep the magic in January and February.

The offense just needs to keep matriculating and help the defense out.

Alex throwing that dart to Hill for the TD was a thing of beauty. Major props to both Alex and Conley on that first and 20 play. Conley was getting grabbed and he still made the catch plus the YAC.

I agree that once again you can fault Alex's play but lets not mention that it was extremely tough to throw with the temp being so cold.

Or that Maclin is just not there right now, which is understandable just coming back from injury - that Int is on Alex but Maclin just let that db jump that route and on another throw to him that was on target, he made almost no effort for the ball, instead just threw up his arms wanting a PI.

Also, you give no credence to the offense making enough plays on offense, even in the second half to switch field position, which was a huge deal with our D playing so well.

Lastly, we had no running game again so there was no play action and the Raiders could play the pass and not worry about the rush in the second half. This is a major concern in the playoffs as weather will be a factor for sure and we must be able to run better than we are trending right now.

Its a team win as most are but to win with the turnover differential of -3 is a huge deal for this team.

Excellent write up!!

I hate the Faders, maybe not quit as much as the arrogant Cheating Donks, but I really hate these guys. One close up shot of a Fader fan after their only TD, reminded me why. He was screaming in the face of two Chiefs fans. They must have been his friends because they did not punch him in the mouth like he deserved. Two decades of being a season ticket holder and it was always the same. Fader fans are mouthy, dress in gay Gothic costumes, instigate more fights and get arrested more than Any fans to come into Arrowhead. It was so awesome to watch them sit out there in sub-freezing weather while their team is gifted field position and turnovers all night, only to come away with 13 total points. Pitiful. A heart-wrenching loss, and they looked bad doing it.

It was amazing to be only the second team (Panthers) in 40 plus years to have a turnover ratio of (-minus 3) and still beat these assholes. From their soup-bowl haircut dork owner, to their mouthy, classless, D-bag head coach, their convict fans and shit-hole city-this was a crushing defeat. 1st seed down to 5th- 1st place down to 2nd, Possibly Bye down to Wildcard, a Split down to a Sweep and another Huge win for the good guys. Being swept by the Chiefs has to be the worst for them-and that makes the win all that much better.

I really hope we beat their loser asses again in the Playoffs. It will be great to finish them off for the season. A trifecta of penalties, pouting and crushing defeats to remind them why they spent decades with losing records year after year. And best of all, make their pos fans put away their black pantyhose, make up and wizard capes for another year.

Ten Things About Tonight’s Game: Week 14

9. KC has won eight straight division games, and so nice to win a game like this in front of a national TV audience.
For shizzle! Not easy to win that many division games in the BEST division in the NFL

8. Then KC decided to go into a shell and stop scoring, and the defense had to win the game.
Play calling turned to shit once again. That goddamn POS draw play was a loser everytime it was run. Why no jet sweeps?

7. Neither Alex Smith or Derek Carr had what you could call a good game. Alex was only sacked once. He ran for a big first down in the fourth quarter.
The KC defense holding Oakland to two field goals was the difference.
Derek had a horrible game-Alex was Jekyll and Hyde. He was incredibly good in 2nd QTR then he was incredibly bad in the third QTR. Maclin looked like he quit on the route Alex threw the INT and Alex looked like he was a frozen statue on the strip as he stood motionless for 2 seconds before he got crunched. He looked hypnotized.

6. Carr is still a puppy, and this is the first really big game under a bright national spotlight that he’s played in.
He has been in the spotlight before on TV outside KC. He is a really good QB and he will be a villain in the future with us and when he heals. I'm glad we got him with an injury.

5. Kelce had 101 yards.
If he can just stop the stupid taunting penalties and cut down on the easy misses, he is the BEST TE in the league. I think he will get there and really liked his interview with NFL network after the game.

4. Special teams was mixed. Unsung hero on specials was Colquitt. He punted five times and all five punts pinned Oakland inside the 20 to give them a long field. This was perhaps the key to the win that most folks don’t consider.
I'm going to politely disagree on this one GB. I think Colquitt was a little off last night. I believe 4 of his 5 punts were from our 40-50 and each time the ball was fair caught around the identical spot of their 17-18 yard line. I think he could have hit the ball another 10 yards without out-punting the coverage and given our guys a chance to down the ball inside the 5-10 rather than the 15-20. Small issue but that's how I saw that.
Tyreek redeemed himself with a great TD catch and the fastest punt return for a TD I ever saw! That was incredibly fast.

3. DJ’s injury is a ruptured achillies. He’s done for the year. This one could be a career-ender.
I thought the same thing when Dj went down-there goes his career but then I thought of Steve Smith and I think DJ comes back for one last year UNLESS we win the Super Bowl.
Peters got caught cheating for an INT with a in move by the WR and we got REAL lucky on that but that pass he defended in the end zone with that huge leap was fantastic.
Nelson's PI call was 100% BULLSHIT!
Terrance Mitchell saved the day at the end but Carr threw that too far inside.

2. Raiders were the Raiders, killing themselves with 82 yards in penalties. King, the Raider punter who got juked out of his jock, picked it up, took it into the end zone and threw it at Hill for a taunting penalty. How Raider stupid is that? But the best one was a false start inside two minutes to make a fourth and one a fourth and six.
Did you expect the Raiders to be anything different?
That false start at the end of the game saved our ass. I felt the Raiders were going to score with just a yard to go but the 6 yards made it a different set of plays that had to call.

1. Tennessee is a game we cannot overlook.
The Chiefs can control their own destiny the rest of the way.
The Titans game has TRAP written all over it. Thank God we have an extra three days to prep and heal!
You can't ask for anything better than controlling you own destiny. The only part we do NOT control is New England gets home field if they win out. We need to win out and have a NE Loss to an AFC team.

Last night I was at an industry Holiday event with my quasi-boss in Lancaster PA and left 1/2 hour before it ended to watch the game in my hotel room.

Yep. Was a catch and fumble no doubt. The refs got it wrong. He was not in the act of catching while falling to the ground. He made the catch and got tackled - that's why he was falling to the ground. It was not in any way part of the catch. He had control, got tackled, and fumbled while on a Chiefs player so he was not down. Should have been KC ball.

DAT sucks on kickoff returns. If we had someone back there to catch it in the end zone & NOT return it...we'd have better field position.

If you want a returner then have Tyreek do it & if you want to give him a rest have Mitchell give it a shot.
