So why haven't you shot a gun?

I grew up in the city/suburbs and never knew anyone who had one. Never heard the topic even mentioned on my jobs in the corporate world (co-workers etc). Never been hunting, don't like the outdoors unless I'm golfing or at a Chiefs/Royals game. Never had any interest in guns.

A short list of weapons I own.
I'm sure I'll miss one or two.
6 - 12 gauge shotguns, (5 semi-auto, 1 over/under)
1 - .458 Winchester Magnum bolt action. It would take down an elephant
2 - .300 Win Mag BAR's. One for elk, one for deer
2 - .50 caliber muzzle-loaders for that traditional touch
1 .58 caliber Thompson center muzzle loader
2 .22 browning rifles
3 .22 ruger rifles
1 .22 mag ruger pistol
2 7mm Mausers
1 20 gauge semi auto benelli shotgun
1 .10 gauge Browning semi auto (to flip cars over)

My rarest is a 7.61 Sharpe and Hart bolt action. Very hard to find ammo for but it's got a jeweled bolt, octagon heavy barrel and I have it hitting a quarter at 400 yards now.

Marksman merit badge by age 11, rifle and archery both.

Never owned one though.

Dad has grandpa's shotgun and rifle. I've shot those.

Most of my shooting outside boyhood/Boy Scouts was hunting with my uncle and cousin on mom's side down in Louisiana.

A few deer, couple dozen pheasant, over the years. Also occasionally turtles caught on taut lines while night fishing.

Pretty good with a rifle. Middling with a bow. Never acquired much skill with a shotgun, though. Maybe 1 out of 20 at skeet. For some reason, I can be precise, but not approximate. ;)

I've shot a couple BB guns, a pistol, a rifle (.22, IIRC), and a shotgun.

It's kind of fun, if a bit scary. I can see the allure and why people make it a hobby but it's not something I'm really into. It's expensive as all hell too.

Honestly, everyone should look into arming themselves for protection, though. The police aren't going to be able to do a damn thing for you.

I am totally indifferent to guns. But I'm glad many of you carry them. I'm not afraid at all you'll use them against me and I enjoy "shadow protection" because I think (but cannot prove) that criminals are scared of you.

I think the last gun I fired was over 30 years ago when I shot an M16 in ROTC. I killed me some Soviet silhouettes.

When I was a kid, my dad had a zillion guns, so I shot a lot of different types of guns, mostly rifles, but some shotguns and at least one handgun that I recall.

PB, you should get a 12 gauge and shoot trap. It's a good time.

Yup, great way to get into the hobby, especially if you have someone that can teach you to 'shoot through' the target and get into a rhythm.

The nice thing about shotguns is the amount of energy that travels down the barrel through the shot. By losing the energy out the barrel of the gun, you end up with far less of it going backwards and thus into your shoulder. Shooting a 12 gauge has less kick that pretty much any rifle you'll ever fire that doesn't have a gas recoil system.

Trap shooting is challenging without being rote and doesn't exact the physical toll that rifle shooting will. Pistol shooting is fun for 20 minutes but absent a 'course' where you move and locate targets/firing positions, it gets old in a hurry.

Back in the 1980s I lived in Columbia. I went out by the Missouri River (before the Katy Trail existed) with a buddy who had an Uzi. He was a Columbia Cop. I basically cut a tree down with an Uzi. We shot hundreds of rounds. Back then ammo didn't cost nearly as much as it does now.

Well, I can't match Gonzo's excellent collection, but my gun safe does include:

My Great Great Grandfather's Zulu gun. It is civil war side-lock musket with the breach cut off and converted to be a single shot 12-gauge. Used by every generation prior to mine to learn to hunt pheasant in Western Kansas

My Grandfather's Sears bolt-action 12-gauge

My father's Wingmaster 12-gauge

My own Mossberg

and My son's Remington Model 1100

Oh and an NRA presentation rifle #6 of 100 chambered in 338 Win Mag
(My mom the gun hater bought me that one shocking the hell out of me.)

I have a fair amount of shotguns (I have a pigeon thrower in the back pasture) and a few rifles/hand guns. No where close to Gonzo.

By far the best is the M256A1 120 mm smoothbore gun found on the M1A1 Tank:) Talk about getting your dick hard. With a good crew, it can hit a 55 gal drum at 2000 meters (~1.5 miles). In desert storm, there were registered kills out to 6-7,000 meters. It was so flat there.

As to a personal fire arm, hands down the M-16. I have shot that the most thus more comfortable. I don't own one because not sure why other goofin.

Gonzo has me beat. Current count is 5 rifles, 2 shotguns, 6 handguns. I'd like to get one more shotgun. Bought my AR this year, and a SIG P320 in 9mm, my carry gun. The Taurus 24-7 in .45 was my old carry gun, and while it is reliable and accurate, it costs a bloody arm and a leg to shoot.

First gun was a Taurus .357. Proudest gun, Baby Browning in .25 that my dad got in Vietnam and gave it to me.

I seem to be better with a pistol than a rifle...and I've only been shooting pistol for about 3 years. It's weird, but for some reason I'm just better with the pistol. I plan on shooting rifle a lot come the spring. I just need to be more comfortable with it I guess.

Exact opposite here, took my new .45 out with a buddy several months back and it took me 2 full clips to get honed in on where the sites were set... honestly, it shouldnt have been as hard as it was

I was seriously pissed at myself, expected far better shooting at a beer can 15 feet away

I've since adjusted the sites but havent shot since, so who knows

Well, the AR is infinitely easier and more accurate for me. I guess it's the 30-30, my positioning on the weapon is just not consistent. It's because I bought it years ago, and I've not really "gotten to know it" so to speak.

I missed a deer this year at an embarrassingly close range. So close, I simply couldn't believe I missed her. Seriously, 25 yards, max. I honestly could have hit it with my friggin' 9mm...I just hurried the shot. I was pissed for like 2 days. I'm committed to getting good with the damn thing. It's a great gun, I just need to run it a lot more than I have.

On the other hand, my .45 and my 9mm have been quite good from the get go. My buddy that I shoot with has been very impressed with my shooting. He wants me to enter some matches this year. I'm thinking late summer I might just do that.

As I said earlier, I grew up with guns, hunting and shooting. But I haven't shot one in 30 years. It is a tool, and I have no need for that tool right now. I won't judge people just because they don't need a tool. I mean, if you don't have bolts do you need a wrench?

The world is full of different people with different ideas. There is nothing wrong with that. A lesson you could learn.

Dad bought me a single shot 22 when I was about 10, started taking me Pheasant hunting at eleven when I used a single shot .410. My favorite gun right now is my Glock 19 and my Browning "hump back" A5 12 ga is a close second.

I'm sure I'll miss one or two.
6 - 12 gauge shotguns, (5 semi-auto, 1 over/under)
1 - .458 Winchester Magnum bolt action. It would take down an elephant
2 - .300 Win Mag BAR's. One for elk, one for deer
2 - .50 caliber muzzle-loaders for that traditional touch
1 .58 caliber Thompson center muzzle loader
2 .22 browning rifles
3 .22 ruger rifles
1 .22 mag ruger pistol
2 7mm Mausers
1 20 gauge semi auto benelli shotgun
1 .10 gauge Browning semi auto (to flip cars over)

My rarest is a 7.61 Sharpe and Hart bolt action. Very hard to find ammo for but it's got a jeweled bolt, octagon heavy barrel and I have it hitting a quarter at 400 yards now.

Raised in SE KS. When I was 12 and my brother was 9, Dad got us .22 single shot rifles for Christmas (1963). Each year after that for Christmas and birthday, we'd get ammo.

His thinking was that if we had an actual rifle, we would treat it as such realizing that we could harm another person. If we had a BB gun we would not be as careful.

Both wife and I have our CC permits (PA, AZ, UT). Won't discuss the weapons.

Shooting a 12 gauge has less kick that pretty much any rifle you'll ever fire that doesn't have a gas recoil system.

.

FWIW this is wrong. A semi automatic will reduce the felt recoil in either a shotgun or a rifle as will the weight of the gun. the recoil itself is the opposite reaction to the amount of the charge and the mass of the projectile. The mass of the bird or buckshot in a shotgun is large. Even lite target load in a 12 gague has about the same recoil as a 30-06. Fire a couple Turkey loads and you will know what serious recoil is.

Should have just pasted this.Shotgun Recoil Table

By Chuck Hawks

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction; that is one of the physical laws of our universe. This means that the momentum of a shotgun's reaction will exactly equal the momentum of the wad, shot and powder gasses ejected from the barrel. In the shooting sports we call that reaction recoil or "kick." It can be measured or computed empirically and has been for this recoil table.

Do not forget that gun weight is a crucial factor in the recoil equation, inversely proportional to recoil. Increase the gun weight by, say, 25% and the recoil goes down by 25%. In the real world, firearms chambered for smaller cartridges are typically built lighter than firearms chambered for more powerful cartridges. That can result in a dramatic increase in kick when, for example, 3", 1-1/4 ounce Magnum shells are fired in a 20 gauge upland gun appropriate for use with 2-3/4", 7/8 ounce loads. Choose a gun weight appropriate for the loads you intend to shoot.

However, perceived recoil, what the shooter feels, is a highly subjective matter. It is influenced by many factors. One of the most important of these, in addition to gun weight, is the fit and shape of the gun stock. A good recoil pad can help soften the blow to the shooter's shoulder. Gas-operated semi-automatic actions reduce apparent recoil by spreading it over a longer period of time. These sorts of things cannot be accounted for in a recoil table. Also, please understand that there are dozens of loads for any given payload weight in a given gauge that will produce the same velocity, but a different amount of recoil. Therefore, the figures in any recoil table should be taken as approximate. Never-the-less, the table below should give a reasonably accurate comparison of the recoil of most popular shotgun gauges/shells.

It is worth remembering that the majority of authorities agree that recoil of over twenty foot pounds will cause most shooters to develop a serous flinch, which is ruinous to good shooting. Fifteen foot pounds is probably about the maximum recoil energy most shooters feel reasonably comfortable with, particularly at the trap or skeet range, where most serious shotgun practice occurs.

While recoil energy determines how hard the blow to the shoulder feels, recoil velocity determines how abrupt the blow to the shoulder feels. My subjective impression is that, with a well designed stock, recoil velocity above about 10 fps begins to feel like a sharp rap on the shoulder, rather than an abrupt push.

I estimate that fifteen foot pounds of free recoil energy and 10 fps of recoil velocity represent the approximate upper limit of the comfort level. Above that recoil becomes increasingly intrusive and performance degrading. Also, the effects of recoil are cumulative. The longer you shoot, and the harder the gun kicks, the more likely you are to flinch. These are good things to remember when comparing shotgun gauges and loads.

The following are taken from various sources including the recoil nomograph in the Handloader's Digest 8th Edition, the online recoil calculator at Big Game Info (http://www.biggameinfo.com/RecoilCalc.asp), the Remington Shoot! program or calculated from the formula given in the Lyman Reloading Handbook, 43rd Edition.

NOTE: For an expanded version of this table showing more loads, see the Expanded Shotgun Recoil Table.

In about a week, shit is getting real around MO....

Missouri joins states allowing concealed carry without permit (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/09/15/missouri-joins-states-allowing-concealed-carry-without-permit.html)

The measure, described by supporters as "constitutional carry," allows people to carry hidden guns anywhere they can currently carry weapons openly, effective January 1. Missouri will join 10 other states with laws that allow most people to carry concealed guns even if they haven't gone through the training required for permits, according to the National Rifle Association, which supported the legislation.

The legislation also would create a "stand-your-ground" right, meaning people don't have a duty to retreat from danger any place they are legally entitled to be present.

[...]

It also expands the "castle doctrine" by allowing invited guests such as baby sitters to use deadly force if confronted in homes.
