View Full Version : Chiefs ~*~ OFFICIAL Chiefs vs. Steelers Irrational Optimism Thread ~*~

I'm gonna be TOO DAMN ANXIOUS all week thinking about this darn football game. I'm gonna be reading all the articles and posts about why the Steelers will win and driving myself crazy. I'm gonna be thinking about how the Chiefs always seem to fall short in big playoff games and never seemed destined for greatness and it's going to turn me into a pre-emptively bitter old shit.

ENOUGH, I SAY!

This thread is a SAFE SPACE™®© for anyone who just wants to let loose with irrational and insane optimism that is utterly unsupported by facts. Rational optimism is also allowed but RATIONAL PESSIMISM AND/OR SKEPTICISM SHALL NOT BE PERMITTED.

Let's just pretend like We'll Definitely Be Fine and talk about how GREAT this win is going to be.

I'll start: the first time Leveon Bell tries that little "stand perfectly still behind the offensive line for two minutes until a huge hole opens" trick, Jones & Poe will LITERALLY flatten him and toss him like a frisbee through the goalposts. In their shock and confusion, the refs will award the Chiefs 3 points en route to a 103-0 final score!!!! Hell yeah!!!!!!

Great thing about our first match-up with them, is we gave them nothing to prepare against. They won't see anything on tape that provides any clue of how we might successfully attack them on either side of the ball. They are flying blind.

Andy Reid and Bob Sutton have had an extra week to prepare. Bell will have 29 yards on the day, Brown will have 2 catches for 26 yards, and Big Ben will throw for 118 yards, 0 TD and 2 INT. Ford and Houston will combine for 4 sacks. Sorenson will also have a sack and a forced fumble on a safety blitz. Poe will scoop up the fumble and return it 12 yards for a TD. Alex will throw for 300 yards and 4 TD. Hill will have an 80 yard touchdown catch, a 76 yard punt return, and a 64 yard touchdown run. Kelce will have 2 TD catches, and Maclin 1. Final Score 42-6 Chiefs

The best thing about this matchup is that the Steelers offense on the road this year has been way more erratic than they are at home. As high-powered as they are at home (nearly 30 ppg), they're decidedly pedestrian on the road (around 21 ppg). Plus, they haven't played a road game in a month.

If the Chiefs hold them to 21, they will win.

I'm feeling positive about this game. Going to be a fun fight to watch.

I will be sitting in the lower level with my best friend and my brother. Quick question, how likely is it they will confiscate any noise makers I bring in? I was thinking about buying 2 dozen of those annoying plastic hand clappers to hand out in my section. I know they are prohibited, but I want to be as loud as possible.

I think you have one team that is highly motivated to revenge an embarrassing loss- and you have another that is way over confident, that is looking to their next opponent.

Steelers will get their yards-makes some big plays-but their defense looks slow at the point of attack unless they are blitzing. Big Butt Ben is prone to the backbreaking INT. as well.

Pittsburgh thinks this game will be served up on a silver platter like the Fins game-but I think it will be much tougher. Alex is Not a turnover machine like Matt Moore.

We protect the ball and wait for Ben to throw those picks-then turn them into points. We have won with this formula all year and will continue to do so.

Chiefs 30 Steelers 24

Our offensive line is playing the best it has in a long time. Denver allowed the fewest yards per play of any team in the league, and our offense manhandled them, and then against SD, we didn't punt until near the end of the game. Plus, we will have had two weeks to prepare against Pittsburgh. You know the coaching staff was mainly focused on Pittsburgh, not the other two possibilities.

I don't have any stats to back this up, but our pass defense seems to be much better the last part of the season than it was when we played Pittsburgh in week 4. It would be awesome to see our secondary lock it down and force Bell to beat us. I honestly think we win that kind of game against these guys. Let Bell run between the 20s, but make them kick FGs. I think Ben throws 2 INTs next week.

This is what KC has built towards in the 4 years Reid and company has been here. This is why they chose Smith. It's time for this team to reach the AFC Championship game. The only pessimism I have is being scorned in previous seasons. But this season has a different feel to it. It has the "it" feel. Stopping this Steelers offense enough to win is going to be like the Atlanta game. Ben will throw some at our guys. They need to pick him off and force some turnovers. Special teams needs to be great and Smith needs to lead the offense and be the stud in the playoffs he has been.

That said. You get in the red zone, DON'T GET CUTE ANDY! Don't throw any fucking picks in the end zone Smith you fucker.

NFL Network is about to do a segment on how good the Steelers are, and that's actually what they're saying.

But take a look at that vaunted 7-game winning streak that they had at the end of the season.

The combined records of the teams they beat was 42-69-1. Four of the seven wins were by less than seven points, and only one team had a winning record.

At the same time, the Chiefs went 5-2 against teams with a combined record of 64-48. 6 of the 7 teams had winning records.

Come on. Which is more impressive? The Chiefs are beating strong teams, and the Steelers are beating weak teams.

This is my reason for irrational optimism. Maybe this IS the Chiefs' year:

Little ol' Clemson beats fricken Alabama

A Cleveland team beats the 70-whatever win Warriors

ANOTHER Cleveland team makes a title game and comes within touching distance of winning

The team they lose to? None other than the cursed Chicago Cubs, 100-whatever years of fail and all

In the EPL, a team with FIVE-THOUSAND-TO-ONE odds won the Championship; this was 10x less likely than the Cleveland BROWNS winning the Super Bowl

Small request for the almighty football gods: Could you magically make Derrick Johnson healthy again? Oh, how the Chiefs could use their ILB -- and defensive leader -- this weekend ... Kansas City can win without him, but stopping Le'Veon Bell is quite the challenge -- even when your entire defense is healthy. These Chiefs do remind me of the '69 title team, in that they have a highly respected coach, an efficient quarterback, a committee backfield and a big-play pass catcher. Those Hank Stram teams were also the first we know of to play some version of today's 3-4. The ILB back then who made sure those guys weren't out of position was Willie Lanier. And that defense was a big reason why K.C. upended the top-seeded Raiders (who had a better record than the 2016 Patriots) to go to Super Bowl IV (a game the Chiefs also won). It can happen again, even without Johnson. Stopping Bell is far easier said than done, though.

Chiefs vs. Steelers: Eight Stats to Know
Posted 2 hours ago

BJ Kissel
Chiefs Reporter
Email @ChiefsReporter

Here are some things to know heading into Sunday’s matchup
The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs.

Here are eight stats to know heading into the game:

1. The Arrowhead Advantage

It’s not a myth or a marketing campaign; it’s a real thing.

It’s proven that, when it’s full of Chiefs Kingdom, Arrowhead Stadium is the loudest in the world, and it’s translated to an impact of what happens on the field.

Under Andy Reid, the Chiefs are 23-9 at Arrowhead Stadium, including having won 18 of their last 23.

During that span, the Chiefs have outscored opponents by more than nine points per game.

This year, the Chiefs’ opponents combined to average 23.6 points per game overall, but when faced with the noise and task of playing at Arrowhead, these same teams mustered just 15.8 points per game.

The San Diego Chargers in Week 1 (27) were the only team to outperform their season average (25.5).

2. Some odds are in the Chiefs’ favor

The Chiefs have a 64 percent chance of winning Sunday’s game against the Steelers, according to the folks over at FiveThirtyEight.com.

They are also given the second-best odds to win the Super Bowl at 15 percent, which trails only the New England Patriots (35 percent).

3. Steelers’ sack totals vs. Chiefs offensive line

Through Week 8, the Steelers ranked dead last in the NFL with 8.0 sacks. Since then, they have the most sacks in the NFL with 30.0. The Steelers kept the trend going last Sunday against the Dolphins, tallying a postseason franchise record with 5.0 sacks.

Their uptick in sacks can be attributed to the return of linebackers Bud Dupree (4.5 sacks) and Ryan Shazier (3.5 sacks) from early season injuries.

Something has to give on Sunday, as the Chiefs have allowed just 4.0 sacks in its last five regular-season games, tied with New England and Miami for the fewest in the NFL.

4. The impact of Tyreek Hill

Hill was recently named a unanimous first-team All-Pro as a punt returner, and in looking at the matchup on Sunday, the Steelers punt coverage unit ranks 24th in the league, allowing an average of 9.6 yards per return.

5. Alex Smith has been exceptional in the playoffs

In five postseason games, Alex Smith has tossed 11 touchdowns to just one interception. He owns a 99.1 quarterback rating in those games, throwing for 240-plus yards in three of them.

Since 2011, Smith’s 99.1 postseason passer rating is the second best in the NFL among qualified quarterbacks, behind only Joe Flacco (107.5 in eight games). His passer rating is better than Drew Brees (98.6 in four games), Eli Manning (96.6 in five games) and Ben Roethlisberger (86.1 in five games), to name a few with a similar number of games played.

Highest career playoff passer rating:

Starr 104.8
Warner 102.8
Brees 100.7
Rodgers 100.3
A.Smith 99.1
Wilson 95.9
Montana 95.6
Sanchez 94.3

— Gil Brandt (@Gil_Brandt) January 11, 2017

6. Le’Veon Bell is ridiculously good

Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell has the most scrimmage yards in the NFL since returning from his three-game suspension to begin the season (1,884). Bell made his season debut against the Chiefs in Week 4, rushing for 144 yards on 18 attempts.

Since he entered the league in 2013, Bell has averaged the most yards from scrimmage per game in the NFL (128.7).

7. The Steelers are a different team offensively at home and on the road

The Steelers are averaging 28.3 points per game at home this season as opposed to just 21.6 points per game on the road.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger owns a 116.7 quarterback rating at home this season, tossing 20 touchdowns to only five interceptions with a 70.8 completion percentage. On the road, however, he has a 78.4 passer rating with nine touchdowns to eight interceptions and a 59.4 completion percentage.

8. The Chiefs defense has come to play at home

The Chiefs are 12-2 in their last 14 games at Arrowhead Stadium, tallying 27 sacks and 17 interceptions in that time. That streak began with a 23-10 win over the Steelers last year at Arrowhead.

With how good our prime time games have been this year, surely the NFL will give the Chiefs more prime time games this year right? We will have the first Thursday night game to start the season because that's usually the Superbowl champs in that game. Could be a Superbowl rematch if we face Dallas.

Balanced attack helps Chiefs get by Dolphins
Oct 22, 2005

MIAMI (AP) -- The Kansas City Chiefs canceled a practice and
rushed to pack, then caught an early flight and landed less than
six hours before kickoff.

When the game began, they were ready.

With Hurricane Wilma scrambling the schedule, the Chiefs shook
off any travel fatigue to beat the Miami Dolphins 30-20 on Friday
night.

Trent Green threw for 289 yards against Miami's injury-depleted
secondary, and the Chiefs totaled a season-high 462 yards while
controlling the ball for nearly 42 minutes. Lawrence Tynes' three
field goals included a 51- and 52-yarder, the two longest kicks of
his career.

"We had a job to do," Chiefs cornerback Patrick Surtain said.
"Hey, it's a football game. We've been playing this since we were
8. It's really simple. Tonight guys found that extra bit of
energy."

Announced attendance was 68,350, but with the scheduling change
and rain in the area, the actual crowd totaled about 40,000.

Playing a rare Friday game, the Dolphins looked like a bad high
school team, and by their second series the small crowd was booing.
Gus Frerotte misfired on two potential touchdown passes and went
11-for-29, Ricky Williams lost 1 yard in six carries and the
defense gave up four scoring drives of eight plays or more.

"I'm not blaming it on anything, because that's not my nature,
but we certainly didn't have the energy and enthusiasm we've had up
to this point," Miami coach Nick Saban said. "We just didn't look
like the same team out there, and I can't give you any reason
exactly why."

Despite a less-than-ideal itinerary, Kansas City (4-2) scored a
touchdown on the first series and never trailed. The Dolphins (2-4)
missed a chance to claim a share of the AFC East lead, instead
losing their third game in a row.

On Thursday, with some forecasters predicting a weekend
hurricane in Florida, the NFL moved up the scheduled Sunday kickoff
by 42 hours, leaving the Chiefs at an apparent disadvantage.

"We weren't really happy about it," Green said. "But we did
our job, we focused and we have to be pleased about that. The team
took a positive approach."

The Chiefs canceled practice Thursday, arrived in South Florida
early Friday afternoon following a three-hour flight and stretched
their legs at a hotel before heading to the stadium. They were
scheduled to leave right after the game and arrive in Kansas City
about 2 a.m., completing a 17-hour trip.

"Now we can go home, relax and watch a bunch of college games
and NFL games this weekend," tackle Willie Roaf said.

Miami's struggling secondary lost cornerback Sam Madison (hip)
and safety Tebucky Jones (pectoral) in the first half, and two
other defensive starters also limped to the sideline. Kansas City
took advantage, scoring on five consecutive possessions for a 30-13
lead.

"Physically, we got beat up out there," Saban said.

Sage Rosenfels stirred a potential quarterback controversy when
he replaced Frerotte with less than 3 minutes left. Rosenfels' only
pass was a 77-yard touchdown strike to Chris Chambers, who split
two defenders to score.

Kansas City's Larry Johnson rushed for 93 yards, and Priest
Holmes ran for 90 and two scores. Miami's Williams, meanwhile,
again saw limited duty in his second game following a one-year
retirement and four-game drug suspension. He has seven yards on 11
carries this season.

Rookie teammate Ronnie Brown carried eight times for 95 yards,
including a 65-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half
that briefly reduced Miami's deficit to 14-13. Kansas City answered
with a TD two plays later on a 35-yard run by Holmes.

Game notes
Miami WR Marty Booker left the game in the fourth quarter
with a twisted ankle. Also injured were DE Kevin Carter (calf) and
S Lance Schulters (thigh bruise). ... Dolphins LB Junior Seau
(calf) was inactive for the second game in a row. ... Chiefs
injuries included DE Jared Allen (groin strain), LB Derrick Johnson
(strained AC joint) and S Jerome Woods (right hamstring sprain).
None of the injuries was believed to be serious. ... Chiefs WR
Dante Hall made his first start of the season for injured Samie
Parker (knee). ... Dolphins T Stockar McDougle, who committed five
penalties last week, was benched and replaced by Vernon Carey. ...
Brown's touchdown was the longest run by a Miami rookie since 1977.
