The Pittsburgh Steelers are fortunate they have a franchise quarterback on their roster, but how long they will have him on the roster seems to be up in the air now.

Tuesday, on his weekly radio show on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger was non-committal about returning to the field for the 2017 season.

"I’m going to take this offseason to evaluate, to consider all options," Roethlisberger said. "To consider health, and family and things like that and just kind of take some time away to evaluate next season, if there’s going to be a next season."

When asked if he’s going to play next year, Roethlisberger replied, "I’m going to take some time and evaluate with my family and just do a lot of praying about it and make sure it’s the right thing for me and my family."

This will come as a shock to most fans, who expected Roethlisberger to play at least a few more seasons before calling it a career, but this is the first time Roethlisberger has openly talked about the possibility of not returning in his career.

Do I think he will be back next season? Yes, and most would agree with that, but it also could tell the Steelers organization the timer has been set for his eventual departure. The team will have to figure out just what to do in that situation. Do you draft a quarterback, look for one in free agency or try to keep some of your in-house talent?

The current depth chart after Roethlisberger is Landry Jones, who is set to be a free agent this offseason and Zach Mettenberger, who rarely dressed, let alone played, in a game this 2016 season.

This likely will be much to do about nothing, but it is just a reminder to fans that Roethlisberger’s career is closer to the end that we all might think

True, but to get to a SB in a weak AFC the road always goes through NE.

Good, then we need Brady to break his leg at the end of the year. That seems to be the way we will make it since we can't let Smith go.

And pays back $18.6 million? Doubtful. He'll play 1-2 more years.

Im surprised that he isn't considering retirement after 2 concussions this year. I can't imagine going out there shitting down your pants is more important than long term health and family.

One more and he might be done. Those aren't to be fucked around with.

He'll say that he hurt himself trying to decide and then he'll find the strength to come back. Ben rises again.

He is such an obnoxious fucking attention whore.

Sorry, Ben - nobody cares about any make-believe injuries this week since you ain't playing anymore. Guess you had to find a way to get some eyes on you somehow.

Oh well - I still like him more than Paul Pierce.

He really shoild have brought this up before the playoffs. I'm sure the NFL would have found a way to give him a big SB victory send-off.

The Steelers are also concerned that Brown is focused too much on his own personal statistics even at the Steelers’ expense, according to Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL Network.

According to the report, after DeAngelo Williams scored the Steelers’ first touchdown in the AFC Championship Game, Brown was pouting while the rest of his teammates were celebrating because Brown wanted the ball to go to him, not Williams, on the play.
