Passing against the blitz

Which quarterbacks fared best against the blitz in 2016? Alex Smith of the Chiefs had the highest Total QBR (93.0), completing 66 percent of his passes with four touchdowns, two interceptions and only three sacks.

Tom Brady had the best touchdown-to-interception ratio with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. Ryan’s 13 touchdowns were the most in the NFL (he had one interception).

I bet they were both in the endzone, which essentially lost both games.

But hey! ESPN seems to think that doesn't matter in their rating system.

This is countered by the fact that Smith had a 72.5 QB rating on third down.

Completed only 60 percent of his passes for 5.98 YPA with 2 TD and 3 INT.

Does not fit a championship QB profile at all, and explains why the Chiefs were bad on third down.

Some quick research...QB ratings on third down....

1. Tom Brady 127.7
2. Aaron Rodgers 116.2
3. Matt Ryan 112.2
4. Ben Roethlisberger 108.0
5. Drew Brees 107.9
6. Marcus Mariota 105.9
7. Kirk Cousins 97.0
8. Dak Prescott 94.6
9. Trevor Siemian 91.5
10. Derek Carr 90.7
11. Andy Dalton 90.3
12. Brian Hoyer 89.8
13. Joe Flacco 89.4
14. Case Keenum 88.4
15. Tyrod Taylor 87.8
16. Ryan Tannehill 87.6
17. Sam Bradford 87.4
18. Colin Kaepnerick 86.9
19. RGIII 84.7
20. Russell Wilson 84.6
21. Carson Palmer 83.4
22. Jameis Winston 82.1
23. Philip Rivers 80.8
24. Matt Stafford 80.4
25. Andrew Luck 79.8
26. Cam Newton 78.3
27. Cody Kessler 78.1
28. Eli Manning 73.6
29. Brock Osweiler 73.3
30. Alex Smith 72.5
31. Jared Goff 71.4
32. Carson Wentz 67.0
33. Matt Barkley 62.3
34. Blake Bortles 57.5
35. Ryan Fitzpatrick 55.9

Your boy is a loser. Had an 82.0 QB rating on third down in 2015 and couldn't even hold that mark up. Declining turd.

If you would actually watch the games you would see that Reid often has everyone within 5 yards of the LoS. Happens all the time.

oops... Reid just called another WR bubble screen on 3rd and 8.

oops ... Reid just refused to run the ball in the redzone again

oops ... Travis Kelce didn't touch the ball for an entire half again

File your complaint to ESPNs stats teams. While it would be nice to have Matt Ryan or tom Brady, it sure is reassuring our QB can deliver the ball instead of taking the sack during a blitz (hell the sack rate went down 40% this year! huzzah!) alongside some of the best.

It's just an article so don't let it get your panties in a bunch, children.

I am forced to agree... a pass behind the LOS completed to a WR/RB for a 2yd gain on 3rd and long is better than a sack. In the end, however, it's still a punt.

It is a meaningless stat (big picture wise) if he can't get first downs. I'm having difficulty finding the stats for this season but this is an example of what Alex Smith brings to the team. Stats are from the 2015 season.
