Richard Hatch, ‘Battlestar Galactica’ star, dead at 71

Richard Hatch, who was best known for his role as Captain Apollo in “Battlestar Galactica,” died Tuesday.

He was 71.

The actor had been in hospice care after a battle with pancreatic cancer, his rep told the Daily News.

His son, Paul,was by his side in his Santa Clarita home.

Hatch got his start with the Los Angeles Repertory Theater as well as shows in Chicago and off Broadway before moving to the small screen, where he debuted in 1971 on “All My Children.”

His first major role came in “The Streets of San Francisco” as Inspector Dan Robbins in 1976, the final season of the detective show.

But his most famous part was Captain Apollo in the 1978 “Battlestar Galactica” TV show, a role for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

He was in a lot of retro TV shows before they were retro: Room 222, Hawaii 5-0, The Waltons, Cannon, Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, The Streets of San Francisco, Battlestar Galactica, CHiPs, Fantasy Island, Murder She Wrote, TJ Hooker, Dynasty, The Love Boat, MacGyver, and Baywatch.

I remember him on Streets of San Francisco. IIRC he became Karl Malden's partner after Michael Douglas left the show.

Damn, I'm really showing my age here.

Met him at a con a few years ago and asked him about Malden, just to be the guy who didn't ask another question about BG. He was very nice, and nice to my son who was with me.

Met him several times at San Diego Comic Con.

He was one of the nicest and welcoming celebrities there.
