View Full Version : Chiefs Chiefs "expected" to open the season @ New England

Per PFT...

Patriots-Chiefs expected to open season, Falcons at home on SNF

The schedule for the 2017 season is set to be announced this week, which means that we will find out which team will be visiting Gillette Stadium to play the Patriots in the first game of the season.

The Falcons are on New England’s home schedule this year, but it doesn’t look like the NFL will opt for a second straight Super Bowl rematch on the first Thursday of the season. Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports that the opener will “almost certainly” involve the Chiefs coming to town.

The Chiefs went 12-4 last season and lost to the Steelers in the divisional round of the playoffs after winning the second seed in the conference as the AFC West champs. The Dolphins and Texans join the Falcons and Chiefs as the other 2016 playoff teams on the Patriots’ home slate, but it appears those games will also come later in the season.

The Falcons, per Volin, will likely be opening their new stadium on Sunday Night Football in Week One. The other three NFC South teams, Packers, Vikings, Bills, Dolphins and Cowboys are possible opponents.

Everyone has a hard schedule in the playoffs. Who ends up winning those games?

Difference is NE can dress their B team and breeze through their division, and lock up a 1 or 2 seed each and every year. Attrition happens during the regular season for most other teams. It's how Denver won their Superbowl: the 1 seed was gifted to them as NE had half their starters on ir late that season and needed to rest them. No way an ineffective Manning goes on the road in the playoffs and wins.
Chiefs were injured and ill prepared for Pittsburgh. Drops, poor qb play, poor o-line play, porous run defense, no special teams edge - you name it. Andy tried to trust them by giving them the bye week off, but they came back unfocused. Meanwhile NE practiced all week, and after early scares against Houston, beat them down.

So the only reason we blew them out is because it was a home game? Those other points you pointed out meant nothing then? Expecting a good game out of two teams that had the two best records in the AFC last year is not that far fetched. The patriots will be favored, but chiefs still have a chance.

Yeah. Dan Rooney tribute year.
Pending Oakland move too might bring them some favour. Especially since the darling prince snapped his ankle/leg last year and their playoff run was short-changed by a Connor Cook led effort.

NFL releases the schedules this Thursday...

AFCW Home/Away is below... Chiefs and Chargers are most similar, same with Raiders and Broncos. Now it all depends on 'when'. And, yes... KC won the West and much like the Chargers, they travel to the Patriots, Giants and Cowboys while the Raiders and Broncos host those 3 teams. It's a travesty.

Chiefs
Home opponents: Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins
Away opponents: Houston Texans, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants

Raiders
Home opponents: New England Patriots, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens
Away opponents: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington, Tennessee Titans

Broncos
Home opponents: New England Patriots, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Cincinnati Bengals
Away opponents: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Indianapolis Colts

Chargers
Home opponents: Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns
Away opponents: New England Patriots, New York Giants, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars

Might as well get this game over with in week one... rather than having to play in New England in December when the Chiefs will hopefully be in the thick of fighting for a playoff berth.

Chiefs
Home opponents: Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins
Away opponents: Houston Texans, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants

It's kind of unique that KC plays both the Jets and Giants away this year. They will play two away games in the same stadium. I wonder if they ever did that in the old Meadowlands stadium.

I can't remember a time this has happened before.

No pressure on us ! I think we pull it off if the Pats are still patting themselves on their own backs. Can you imagine if we draft McCaffrey and have Tyreek and Kelce on the field together at least 60-70% of the plays. Who do you cover?? Reid will be a kid in candy store.

I could see us winning this, actually.

The Pats, outside of the last two pissed off seasons, sometimes take a while to "gel" and occasionally drop the game that causes ESPN analysts to declare the dynasty doomed.

But once they gel, they're basically unstoppable.

Ought to be a hell of a game. Hope both teams are healthy, and stay healthy.

Will be fun seeking Gronk, Cooks and Edelman on the field together. IF the Pats OLine holds up and Brady doesn't hit the "oh, crap, I'm playing my age" wall, ought to be a great offense.

Defense returns nearly all key players so should be fine next year too.

And then the key -- as always -- is just staying healthy.

Why are people so scared of the Pats? Since Reid has been here we've kicked the crap out of them on national TV and then lost to them by a mere 7-pts in the playoffs.

I look at this as the perfect wk-1 matchup for us. If we lose, no big it's the Pats, if we win, great way to start the season and build confidence.

Bruce Arians: Week One loss to Patriots derailed our season

When the Patriots met the Cardinals in Week One of 2016, it was viewed as a potential Super Bowl preview between two of the league’s best teams. As it turned out, it was a great game that came down to the final minute — but it was no Super Bowl preview.

After the Patriots beat the Cardinals 23-21, New England went on to win the Super Bowl, while Arizona went on to finish the season a disappointing 7-8-1. Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said on the PFT Live podcast that he thinks the Week One loss sent the rest of the season spiraling out of control.

“I think the biggest reason was losing the opener on Sunday Night Football to the Patriots on that missed field goal,” Arians said. “That took a lot of swagger out of our football team, then we came back and lost to the Rams in another close game. We didn’t win the close games we had won in the past but it all goes back to that first one.”

The flip side is, the Cardinals didn’t give up on their season and finished with two impressive wins in Weeks 16 and 17. Arians said he thinks that will propel them into the coming season, when he expects his team to play a lot better than it did last year, hopefully starting in Week One.

I don't think Arians' worries re: what happened to the Cardinals applies to the Chiefs. That game last year was AT HOME against a Brady-less Patriots. I could see a loss against a rookie QB at home would seriously shake the confidence of a team that thought it was a contender.

The Chiefs this year play the Patriots on the road in the game where we're hoisting our SB banner, with Brady behind center and Gronk back. I think defending Super Bowl champs are like 12-1 or 13-0 or something in such games since the Thursday night season opener hosted by the defending SB champ was introduced in about 2004. Chiefs will have every reason -- unless they are completely blown out -- to leave with a loss (if they do) and shrug it off.

I just hope we don't shit the bed but coming out with a win would be remarkable. This game just may set the tone for the season good or bad what to expect. The good thing that this team has proved even after a loss not to count them out because this is a resilient team and can salvage a season and what not.

I predict a good, close competitive game that the Patriots take control of in the 2nd half and win comfortably, but by a reasonably close score (say 7-10 points, but a late Chiefs touchdown makes that score look more closer than the 2nd half really was).

More importantly, however, that loss does not derail the Chiefs season at all and they go on to make the playoffs.

Chiefs are a team that win games they shouldn't and lose games they should win. Still I think it's a 9-7 team battling for a playoff spot just will need a lot of help getting it from other teams.

We can beat them. We have the team to do it.

Expect a lot of quick passes by NE. That's how they beat teams with good pass rushes like we should have assuming Justin Houston plays like he should. Hopefully our D-line puts their hands up as much as possible. NYGs dline always gave them fits in the SBs with that strategy.
