No, your eyes do not deceive you. The San Francisco 49ers set a new record by going shotgun (or pistol) on 99 percent of plays in 2016. This was Maximum Chip Kelly like the NFL had never seen before.
The 49ers only put their quarterback under center on ten offensive plays last season. TEN. Which means there were more teams that didn't run a single shotgun play 20 years ago -- 13, including the 1996 San Francisco 49ers -- than there were non-shotgun plays run by the 2016 San Francisco 49ers.
(By the way, in case it couldn't get stranger, none of those ten plays were short-yardage plays. Every one of the plays came with 9-10 yards to go except for a second-and-6, although we're only counting plays that counted here. There was also a second-and-4 where Daniel Kilgore got a false start. From Week 13 through Week 17, Colin Kaepernick never went under center.)
Also, for those of you curious because of today's signing of Adrian Peterson by New Orleans, the Saints ranked 25th last year, going shotgun on "only" 55 percent of snaps.

So pretty soon a QB only taking snaps out of shotgun in college will be a plus?

Peyton Manning spent his career in the shotgun but none of the college players coming out can ever be any good because they have no experience under center.

This is what happens when the passing game is given free reign to get away with whatever they want and the defense can't breathe on guys without getting a penalty.

Peyton played a ton under center.

I have pondered this question as well and the struggle between college vs pro offenses and college has no need to bend to the NFL way of offenses but rather it might be the other way around if more and more QBs refuse to learn how to QB from under center (reading defenses, bluff cadences, audibling to correct plays, etc.....as the quality of pro Qbs gets less and less over time.

without a developmental league, the nfl has no choice but to bow to the college trends. :D

I think at least part of it is the "need" to start rookie QBs lately. Offenses have to work with what they know which means shotgun.

NFL(Not For Long) forces these coaches to start more of these rookie QBs to soon to your point because many Qbs (drafted in all rds)in the last 15 yrs have not progressed fully under center which causes these reaches in the first rd. And I do agree with your point that OCs will start with what they know, but most IMO at least from what I have seen only progress so far under center never ever removing that "Binky shot gun" from them. I'll give AS credit that he has done it but he is just not a playmaking QB when you need it the most.

Heard a commentary the other day on a sports show that talked about this very topic and that he really believes that the NFL will have to go back to the very tradition of grooming a QB for 3-4yrs like it used to be IF they want a true "under center" type QB and offense BUT the "Not For Long" pressure of winning now does not allow this any longer. As frustrated as Rogers was sitting under Favre for those years it paid big dividends !! :thumb:

You remember that stretch play they used to run in Indy with Edge? Those fuckers killed us with that.

But what about the pro offense advantage for a rookie that played in one in college? The thing is there have been numerous bust that came from spread offenses. Pro's have grown into to it over the years but in college they played in non spread offenses.

Part of it is pass rush specialists. Some of these fools couldn't get to the back of their drops before they get smeared (I'm looking at you buttchin)

The spread, shotgun game wont last as a consistently viable plan... unless the rules are subjected to further wholesale change

Its a cheap fad, only the classics have staying power

If you haven't read this book... check it out. Especially those of you that like Mahommes.

That's what you took from my post? Weird...

Honestly, the book and the history of the passing game that it details was pretty interesting to me, especially the present day college dynamic.
