Lewdog? What are your thoughts on this guy?!?

He needs to hit the weight room.

Analysis

Strengths

Good height and extraordinary arm length. Arms measure in at over 34.5 inches which is incredibly rare at the position. Showed off solid agility drill numbers at his pro day. Possesses quality footwork and some short-area quickness to bird-dog receivers in their routes. Will make a high percentage of plays on the ball when he's able to crowd the route. Plays with adequate change of direction to mirror in-breaking routes. Good ball-tracker when forced to into a vertical chase. Plays with hustle. Willing to attack run support responsibility with some aggressiveness.

Weaknesses

Lives in a thin frame. Doesn't have finishing power as tackler and will allow "drag yards" after contact with runners. Played in just five games his senior season due to a suspension for a failed drug test administered by NCAA during 2015 playoffs. Ran in the high 4.5 range (official time) at his pro day. Tape shows a player who doesn't have instant burst into a makeup gear when beaten over the top. Weak in his upper body and declined to bench press at his pro day. Can be banged off-balance by physical receivers. Needs to commit to challenging the catch after triggering on the throw.

Draft Projection

Round 7-PFA

Bottom Line

In the negative column, he's thin and lacks adequate play strength and long speed. However, his extreme arm length will be very enticing to teams looking to add weight to his frame and turn him into a press and trail cornerback. Nelson has a shot to become a "make it guy" but may need another year of work on building up his frame.

He could be if properly motivated. When he is on, he is a monster, especially in the run game. But when he isn't, he's penalty-prone, and doesn't finish plays. Needs to watch his weight. I heard he was upwards of 360+ at times.

It states here 400. They are going to have to keep the dude away from Sonic.

Overview

The Los Angeles metro area native was everybody's High School All-American on the offensive line, and kept his talents in town by signing with the Trojans. Mama became one of the first duo of true freshman starters in a Trojans' season opener with Toa Lobendahn, starting four games that season (two at left guard, two at right guard). He was a 2015 honorable mention All-Pac-12 pick at left guard after starting 13 of 14 games played, and won that starting job again in 12 of 13 games in 2016, earning second-team all-conference recognition by league coaches.

Analysis

Strengths

Big boy with NFL frame. Good posture in his pass sets with hands in punch-ready position in front of his chest, knees bent and back flat. Punch is as stiff as a boxing jab. Uncorks hands early and lands with force behind maximum arm extension. Anchors against bull rushers with adequate knee-bend and can slow their charge. Has dropped about 75 pounds since coming to USC. With less weight has come more lateral quickness to reach and sustain in space. Skip-pull steps are clean and is able to work long and short pulls. Adequate radar in space to find and make second-level blocks.

Weaknesses

Was stuck in a battle for starting position to open season due to lack of accountability and consistency. Has too much bad weight around his midsection. Formerly 400 pounds so weight will have to be monitored carefully. Narrow base causes limited power zone and marginal contact balance. Allows angle blocks to slide out the side door too easily. When block gets off track, body control diminishes greatly. Below average redirect inside and recovery balance. Right-hand punch becomes predictable and can be countered for quick wins.

Draft Projection

Round 5

NFL Comparison

Bobby Hart

Bottom Line

Power-based guard who can generate movement off the ball, but lacks the balance and bend to be a consistent block sustainer. Smart defenders started to time up Mama's punch in pass protection, so he will need to vary his approach, but he does have the heavy hands and sturdy base to combat bull-rushers and set a shallow anchor. Could start his career as a backup, but has the size and ability to become eventual starter.

What's so great about him? I'm not a fan. He can go deep and that's about it. Bad route runner with average hands. Highly touted underachiever at UGA and over valued in KC. He is part of the reason we signed a bunch of free agent WRs.

Love the WR signings. Wilson and Conley aren't good enough and I think Hill will continue to be a role player.

Conley's numbers were inline with a second year 3rd round player, especially in an offense that tends to favor running backs and TE's as primary targets.

Andy Reid has already publicly stated that Tyreek Hill's role will increase offensively this year, so you're wrong about that, too.

His numbers were equal to an oft-injured Jeremy Maclin in 2016 and he made several clutch catches in close games.

Most of those free agent signings have zero to due with Conley and more to due with Wilson and Robinson.

In addition to that, the majority are "Try Out" players, not guys intended for the 90.

Hi Dane, good to see you back!

As per Conley, I think the jury's still out on the kid. Seems to me that Alex doesn't throw him the ball much, but when he does, Conley seems to catch it. Now, whether or not he's not getting the ball because he's not open, is another matter. I don't have All-22, so it's hard to tell. Nonetheless, his progression as an NFL WR seems to be advancing as expected.

As I recall, the UDFA WR signings are for rather tall WRs, so that does provide some concern that perhaps Conley isn't the answer as per needs for a tall receiver?

Personally, other than Hill, I think our WR corps is rather pedestrian. Maclin certainly disappointed last year. Wilson has some nice traits, but a wide catch radius certainly isn't one of them. Conley is ok, but to me at least doesn't demonstrate much upside beyond being an average #2 receiver. To date, Robinson is nothing more than a ST gunner. With all that in mind, I think the door's wide open for one (or more) of these UDFA WRs to make the team. We definitely need to upgrade that unit.

The roster contains guys with the last names of Alexander, James, Logan, Mitchell, Murray, Nelson, Nicolas, Parker, Reid, Sherman, Thomas, Travis, and you could even add Wilson if you're a Tom Hanks fan.

Spoiler tags are important because they keep the OP smaller (scrolling forever blows), and also because the page loads like shit when there's dozens of embedded videos trying to load.

If you quote my post, then c/p it into the OP, it should keep things fast, nice and tidy. If not, no worries.

I quoted and c/p'd your post, but the only thing that showed up in the quote was, "Offense, Defense, Wide Receivers, Tight Ends, etc." which was nice because it gave me a template to work with, but I ended up just manually going through and embedding the highlight vids.

I think signing all these guys is an indication that Dorsey/Reid realize that they still have some significant holes to fill.

I still think we have issues at cornerback. If Mike Williams is as good as advertise we might have real issues against the Chargers with a healthy Allen and Williams.

Maclin quitting last year was a red flag about needing more depth and options at the WR position.

A couple of TEs and a couple of Guards are also at positions we need more options.

People said we had too many draft picks to fit on a team yet Dorsey went out and got a big crop of UDFA as well. Time to cut the chaff on this team and get rid of average players making above-average money.

Right. Because the Chiefs (and every other team) don't do this every year.

Also, some of these guys aren't actually signed. They were just invited to try out during the rookie mini-camp. You need enough bodies to make the rookie mini-camp worth it.

The key is finding some UDFA's that have something to work with.

Remember when Squirmin Herman Motherfucking Sack of Cunt Edwards brought in like 50 or some such shit. Everybody was all like "LOOK AT THIS GUY. NO STONE UNTURNED DUR."

Turns out they were all worthless, same with most of his draft picks and FA acquisitions.

As a fan of Oregon State, what is your honest opinion of DC? Highlight videos particularly suck for defenders since all we see are hard hits and INTs. Is he good in coverage at all or is he another Benard "Bone crusher" Pollard that goes for the big hit, missing 70% of the time, and can't cover for shit?

I wish I could tell you more but I have barely been able to see the Beavers play the last two years thanks to DirecTV being a bunch of ****nuts and not carrying the PAC12 Network. The Beavers haven't been good enough to be on national TV much.

When I have seen them play, the defense plays very well the first half before wearing down due to lack of depth and zero support from the offense. They did hold Davis Webb to 114 yards when they beat Cal last year and held very good Wazzu offense down for a half before collapsing in the second half.

My limited impression is that DC is decent in coverage and will knock your head off if you try to catch a ball in his vicinity. He's good in run support. However, his speed is limited so he isn't going to play deep.

Sorry I can't tell you more.

He signed during the first wave of UDFA signings. After the mini-camp, the Chiefs waived some of those players and then signed some of the try out players instead.

I do think it's interesting that they signed a punter. It's the first time in forever, iirc. I think they are probably eyeing Colquitt's huge cap hit.

Lol wut?

Murray was an all-pro special teamer and has a great shot to be a really good safety with all of his tools and intangibles.

Toub makes everyone look on ST's. Gaines was a damn good gunner in his rookie year, DJ is a pro bowl ST, Knile Davis was a very good returner here and Robinson was a very good gunner last season.

I'm a big Eric Murray fan, but I think Sterns is a gamer too. I hope we can keep both somehow but the roster is so packed with 3 extended Safeties and Murray.

Go listen to Terez Paylor'a podcast. They said coaches were very impressed with him and liked him a lot at the Senior Bowl. I think the kid is good enough to make it a battle at camp.

He's already off to a great start.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Jordan Sterns takes his job.

Sterns had 2 picks in rookie minicamp/OTA's and stood out. Very good box safety with some cover ability and ST's potential.

GRADE
4.99

Jordan Sterns (SS)
HT: 5'11" WT: 196LBS.
POSITION: SS
SCHOOL: Oklahoma St.
ARM LENGTH: 31 3/8"
HANDS: 8 7/8"

Overview:
Sterns could have stayed in the Lone Star State for college as a four-star recruit, but chose to go to Stillwater instead. The Cowboys got an excellent player out of the deal, one who would lead the team in tackles three times, accumulating more than 100 stops (60 or more solo) each season. He played regularly as a reserve as a true freshman (13 tackles), then became a team leader in his sophomore year (103 tackles, 4.5 for loss, four pass break-ups, two blocked kicks). Sterns had 72 solo stops for the second straight year in 2015, receiving second-team All-Big 12 notice for his all-around play (108 total tackles, two interceptions). Once again he hit the century mark in tackles in a first-team All-Big 12 senior season, making 101 stops, 5.5 for loss, and set career highs with three interceptions and five pass break-ups.

ANALYSIS:

Strengths:
Has adequate NFL size, but should be able to add more bulk if needed. Triggers fast against the run and had rare tackle production over a three-year run. Has ability to play robber spot and above average instincts give him a head start to challenge throws. Reads plant foot of quarterback on three-step drops and will jump slants. Tough and smart. A favorite of the coaching staff. Will go and get tackles on kick coverage unit.

Weaknesses:
Average athlete who is a little stiff in his hips. Transitions are bulky. Slow in his pedal and not a natural pattern-matcher in man coverage. Thirsty in coverage and bites too readily on play-action and "sluggo" routes. Lacks long speed to recover when beaten. Lacks the range and athleticism to play centerfield. Box safety type, but isn't a commanding, physical presence.

Draft Projection:
PFA

Sources Tell Us:
"He's the type of player you want in your locker room. He has to prove he's the type of player you want on your sideline. Has to play up near the line. His instincts are nice, but you can't have him in space for very long." -- Regional scout for NFC East team

Bottom Line:
Probably won't be a very strong tester from an athletic standpoint, but it will be hard to ignore his production and leadership. Strong pre-draft workouts could help his cause, but his initial opportunity to make a roster will probably come via special teams. Backup potential as a ceiling.

Ashton Lampkin is another player I like. Wondering if he could push for that last CB spot.

GRADE
5.12

Ashton Lampkin (CB)
HT: 6'0" WT: 189LBS.
POSITION: CB
SCHOOL: Oklahoma St.
ARM LENGTH: 31"
HANDS: 9 3/8"

Overview:
Finally getting a chance to start in 2014 after two years playing every game as a reserve (42 tackles, one interception), Lampkin was holding up nicely for the Cowboys' defense, intercepting two passes and breaking up three others in the first month of the season. But in the season's fourth game against Texas Tech, the Lone Star native suffered a severe ankle injury that forced him to request a medical redshirt. The next season, once again breaking into the starting lineup meant suffering an injury. Lampkin played through the broken thumb, however, to start eight games, make 31 tackles, break up five passes, and even intercept a Chad Kelly pass in the opening series of the Sugar Bowl. He finished his career healthy and productive, starting all 13 games and earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors with 34 tackles, one interception and three pass breakups.

COMBINE STATS:
40 YARD DASH: 4.52 SEC
BENCH PRESS: 19 REPS
VERTICAL JUMP: 34.5 INCH
BROAD JUMP: 120.0 INCH

ANALYSIS:

Strengths:
Played in various coverages and has rare experience of playing some press coverage in the Big 12. Shows patience from press coverage. Can wait for receivers to release before opening hips. Decent feet and hip fluidity to mirror and match in space. Can flip hips and hit his top gear quickly. Takes good recovery angles on post routes.

Weaknesses:
Not a twitchy, explosive cornerback. Has issues with maintaining discipline from man and zone coverage. Gets caught staring down quarterbacks and will find himself out of position. Has a hitch at the top of his pedal when planting to drive on the throw. Delay in closing to ball will limit his production on the ball. Might not be able to carry long speed down the field. Disinterested tackler.

Draft Projection:
Round 7-PFA

Sources Tell Us:
"We want our cornerbacks to be physical in run support. Our defense demands it. He turns down chances to step up and stick people in support so there is no reason for me to even put his name in front of our coaches." -- Southwest area scout for NFC team

Bottom Line:
Average cornerback without a physical or play trait that he can plant his flag. Won't be physical enough against the run for some teams and will lack the size and deep speed for others. However, he's got decent size and is a relatively fluid athlete so he could hear his name called later in the draft. Might be fighting for a roster spot with each passing season.

They liked him so much as to not spend a draft pick on him?

Unless Murray shits the bed, it's hard not to see him on the 53.

There are very few roster spots available in 2017 and I think that the Practice Squad will be full of potential, which likely where the best UDFA's land in September.

If Damien Mama can lose 50 pounds between now and TC, I think he's a real threat to make the 53 but realistically, he ends up on the PS.
