Frank Deford was one of the honorees during Journalism Week my senior year at Mizzou (Ted Turner and William Raspberry were a couple of the others). My friend was tasked with picking Frank up at the airport and driving him to Columbia. He said Frank was a really nice guy.

Frank gave a speech that week in which he said that female reporters should flirt with their male interview subjects to build rapport. That didn't go over too well with a lot of the female students in the audience.

I would have thought he was considerably older.

I've been reading Deford since 1976, the first year I subscribed to SI, with paper route income.

I never, ever connected with his work. I always thought he was a pompous jackass who thought he was above the people he wrote about. I'll never understand the fascination.

That said, RIP.

I found that appealing.

Deford's kind aren't around much anymore and we're lesser for it. He was a lion when print media was still king. Here is the in-depth he wrote on Howard Cosell.
(btw si.com is now my main sports site, I haven't clicked on espn in weeks and don't know that i ever will again)

Frank Deford is probably THE last great sports writer, reporter and broadcaster from the 70's and 80's. All the others are sadly gone. Great stuff all those guys for us in our early 50's and older.
R.I.P.
