Last year, when the Royals went on a streak reminiscent of the one they just came off of, there were a lot of "remember 2014" calls. In the end, the Royals were a .500 team. That is more than likely the ceiling for this team as constructed currently. Except if we keep everybody and end up .500 or so, for the next several years it will be "remember 2004".

That's not entirely true. If you hang around .500 you'll give yourself a shot in this era with two wild cards. The 2015 Mets were basically .500 at the end of July. The 2012 Tigers were 38-40 at the end of June. The 2011 Cardinals were 50-47 on July 20th. The 2010 Giants were 41-40 on July 4th. The 2009 Phillies were 39-37 on July 2nd.

All of those teams played in the World Series. This isn't even including other playoff teams. Of course that doesn't mean the Royals are going to do it... but there is almost certainly one (if not several) of these teams hanging around .500 that'll make the playoffs. If you can stay in striking distance and be relatively healthy by July 1st, you've put yourself in position to compete.

Guillen would not name names, so maybe his rant is kind of like that of Brick Tamland who didn't know what the yelling and loud noises were about. But it's not the legitimacy of what was said, it's the heat of the steam released. It's the amount of swearing. It's the quotability. I can't wait for the tape.
