I'm about ready to take the plunge to update my phones. My phone is ancient (hey, I use it for a phone) but I'd like to update to a couple Iphone 6 or 7 models on an unlimited plan. How big a deal is the storage in an I-Phone? is 32GB generally enough if you primarily use it as a frickin' phone? I'd also like it to serve as a mobile wifi hot spot if possible.

I've only been paying Sprint about $95 a month for two lines. My wife does text but I don't. I do most of my internet stuff on my laptop or IPad, but would like to have internet access at places like Arrowhead on my phone.

So, who's currently got the best deal?

I know Verizon's customer data just got hacked.

I've been with Sprint for 20 years but would leave for a better deal. Certainly don't feel obligated to stay with them.

TMobile seems pretty decent. Two lines unlimited for $80 total.

Boost says they use Sprint's Network but looks like kind of like a cheezy back door kinda company.

Anybody got a plan or service currently that they love?

I have had my IPhone 5s for 2 1/2 years and 32GB is plenty of space. I'm nowhere close to using even half of it. I only have a few apps and use it primarily as a phone and take some pics sometimes. As far as plans, I have no idea who is cheaper because I get a large employee discount since I work for the phone company.

Sprint and T-Mobile are going to be your best options if cost is your main concern. I'm not a huge fan of Sprint due to a dead zone at my house, but if you've used them for years and generally have coverage where you need it, I don't know any strong reason to switch.

Straight Talk wireless here. iPhone SE was $159 and unlimited text/talk/data is $40/month.

Yeah, I have Sprint for about 7 years now, and I don't have any issues with them. The last 2 years where I changed my plan to 1GB, new phone payment plan, and the monthly plan, all of this was $88 a month. Once the phone payment is paid off, I believe it will drop down to the $64 neighborhood.

As I mentioned above, 1GB of data isn't much, but with pretty much everywhere having Wi-Fi, there isn't really a need for me to have a unlimited data. I do have unlimited text and voice, so that's good enough for me.

The down side is, if you go to some rural areas in KS/MO, it can get frustrating at times because you're on a "Extended Network" area, another word of roaming.

And George, I don't know if you use apps or take a ton of photos/movies or anything on your phone a lot, but since you mentioned that you use your iPad and such, I think a 32GB will be fine for you. The higher GB's are usually for people who like to download music and stuff, while having like 50+ apps.

Why would you want an I(nferior)Phone? I guess they're okay. They are idiot proof. But androids can do so much more.

I'll bite. Do more what? My whole house has iPhones and I was last to get one because it makes things easier have the same brand. What do androids do that's so different other than you don't need iTunes. I hate iTunes.

I have used iPhone first, then switched over to Android. I have regretted going to Android in the first place.

Never am going back to Android.

I would say a better argument is that you can do the same on Android for a bit less money. $160 for a pair of wireless ear phones is an example.

I have an iPhone but bought an Android tablet because I didn't want to fight iTunes over how to watch movies offline on airplanes. .

For music I stream Google Play.

I'm pretty sure you guys on outdated plans need to upgrade to the new unlimited plans. Once Verizon came out with their unlimited data plan, every other carrier followed suit and slashed their plan prices to make sure they are well above Verizon.

I was paying almost $30 more a month on an old unlimited plan through Sprint for months. They weren't going to plan on telling me I could get a superior plan at a less of a cost as long as I kept paying the man.

Cricket here. Five phones for $100 per month. 4gb of high speed bandwidth per phone per month then it drops to slow speeds at an unlimited rate.

What's the deal here? I have been Verizon for years and have not heard this? Guess I need to burn up google and see what's up:hmmm:

Oh, and I can't help you on smart phone options. I might be the last human being on the planet with an old flip phone. I love it!! The wife upgraded to whatever was hot stuff around last June-ish. I hate her phone, I try not to even touch it. I will admit it is nice for the picture jokes my buddies send that have words. My screen is so crappy I cant read them, so I forward them to her phone and then look at them:D

The thing with iphones is the memory is limited to the phone to which you purchase, 64, 128, 256gb ect. but you can back up the phone to icloud or a computer with itunes and remove the pictures and what not on your phone to create more space. just remember that those unlimited plans dont include the cost of the phone or taxes. im currently on the unlimited plan for verizon and all of us have iphones 7 and iphones 7 plus's and the average cost per line is $94. As for quality the ios on iphones is waaaay more reliable than the droid os

Definitely don't get anything less than 32GB of storage. The camera on an iPhone is pretty phenomenal so even though you just used it "as a phone" before, doesn't mean that you will continue to do so when you start carrying a nice camera in your pocket all the time.

Between an Android or an iPhone, you're more likely to get important things like security updates quickly with an iPhone, and if it breaks you can talk to someone at the Apple Store or their online support.

In terms of a carrier the most important thing is that your phone will work where you are. So everyone saying "VZW is the best!!" doesn't matter a tinkers damn if you can't get a signal in your living room.

Good thread George and pretty timely.

We were forced to go with Verizon when we relocated to the Ozarks, as they have a tower we can see not too far from our house.

We had been with Cell One, then Cingular and finally AT&T through the years all the way back to "the brick." They had no signal here and I am not sure any others do either.

Verizon has become too expensive for us with two smart phones (her I-phone and my android) and my contract expires soon.

I am considering going back to a cheap flip phone, but I sure enjoy the picture/text capability.

Prefer my laptop for internet.

Sprint has been unlimited for like 4 years. Verizon and T-Mobile just did it in the past year.

Saying that. If you like phone tech Verizon has all the best phones. Moto and Google pixl and carry every other phone the competitors do.

T-Mobile and sprint are cheaper unless you are rocking a 4 phone plan with Verizon.

You can't go wrong with any carrier right now.

Tmobile does me right. Bill is $120/month for 3 phones w/ unlimited data. No problems with service. I had sprint but left them mostly because the cdma. Tried verizon once and that was freaking hell of expensive. Att too. At one point used boost but they don't have fam plans and it's kind of a pain the ass to manage the account. Great for single people who don't want contracts.

I've got one of those too. If you run into problems, it's likely related to a weak wireless signal. We really like ours. If you can put the hard-wired Ring Pro onto your house, go with that option.

A little off topic, but I had a package lost from UPS about 10 years ago that was left at my front door (supposedly). From that point on, my address was blacklisted by UPS so that any package delivered to my house had to have signature confirmation, which basically resulted in me having to drive 20 miles to their warehouse to pick up my package because I work during the day and can't be home to sign for packages.

Unlimited plans are a joke. Make sure you read the fine print, and if you think that bump down to lower speeds won't bother you, you've forgotten what 3g really feels like.

As for phones, the only compelling argument for iPhone is that they are almost necessary if others in your household are using iThings. The compelling argument against iPhones is iTunes, which is the most user-unfriendly piece of trash software to ever reach widespread use.

We pay $120-ish total for 5 lines with 4gb of high-speed data each on T-mobile. Happy with their customer service. Provider really depends on your coverage/dead-spots. We are also all-Android phones, all the time. T-mobile is very BYOD friendly; none of our phones were bought from them.

When I'm using an Android phone the experience is like having a hand held personal computer that also makes phone calls. When I have used an iPhone the experience is like using a product that a large company has designed based on what they think I need, and what they want to sell me. I'll stick with Android.

Save a box after you get something sent to you. Eat at Taco Bell. Take a runny shit into a giant (freezer bag style) Ziploc bag. Seal it up nicely. Put it in a ball of bubble wrap. Secure it with duct tape. Put it in that box. Leave that box on your porch every morning until someone steals it.

Straight Talk wireless here. iPhone SE was $159 and unlimited text/talk/data is $40/month.

Well I took Bob's advice and hired Straight Talk tonight. After work I went into the Sprint Store across from Oak Park Mall in OP. It was worse than the DMV. This bored skinny girl was standing behind a bar table with a cheap tablet, chewing on the straw of a McDonalds drink. I asked her, "How long is the wait to talk to somebody about upgrading two Sprint phones?" "Not more than 20 minutes" she said without looking at me. She took my name and started chewing on the straw again. Meanwhile, the waiting room looks like Wal-Mart at its worst. A bunch of 20 somethings covered with tatts, pants sagging down to their knees, screaming dirty kids in tow. One guy was just chatting up the Sprint guy, and they just talked about "stuff" for probably 45 minutes before getting down to business. 90 minutes later, the bored girl grabs her purse and heads for the front door. "HEY....I said...what happened to "not more than 20 minutes?" "Sorry" she said and kind of smirked and left. So I said to myself "**** this, I'm outta here...my drive home is still 45 minutes." So just as i'm getting up to leave, bored girls replacement comes over and says "sorry, you're next." Next meant another 15 minutes. So now 20 minutes is an hour 45. I talk to the Sprint Guy who can actually do something for me. "How many years have I been a customer?" I ask him. "19 years" he says. So we start talking about getting the two IPhone 7's -lease one get one- and he says "You can't keep your phone numbers." I say "WHY NOT?" We'd had my number for 19 years, and my wife's had hers for 15 years. "Has to be new service, dude..." he says to me very impassively. I say "Well, not being able to keep our numbers is a deal breaker. You wanna re-think that?" "Nuthin' I can do, man...." guy says. So I tell him, 'That's It, I'm done," and clap my hands like leaving a blackjack table. He mumbles..."have a nice evening....." So I come home, find Straight Talk on the web, get a chat with one of their sales dudes, he answers all my questions in about 15 minutes. I got two Iphone 6's (new) paid $199 ea for them to buy them outright, deal is unlimited talk/text/8GB data for $45 per month. Plus I got free overnight shipping on the phones and a 15% discount for buying two phones on the same order. After I pay for the phones, our monthly bill will drop to $80 for both lines (pay 3 months at a time to save $10) no long term contract, I own the phone if I'm not happy. I was paying Sprint right at $100 a month for two ancient phones and a much more restrictive plan that I had to honor for two years. Assholes. Thanks Bob Dole. Free At Last... my last job, phones weren't allowed unless it was an emergency. so i adhered to the rule. only time i used mine was to check on sports info while taking a shit at work (i allowed myself two ten minute shits a day ROFL). everyone else would hide their phones in magazines and crossword books.

anyways, my new job. there are two blokes that literally carry a box of bottled water from the conveyor to the pallet, single handed. and in the other they are scrolling thru instagram posts. they will stop the work they are doing to change music choices with their ear buds. literally five hours of the day. and then they talk about how they cannot understand having no credit at the middle of the month, so they buy more credit. :D

but i won't say a word because even though i could improve the lines production by three hours a day, there are less than ten of us, and they would all resent me for them losing their baby momma texts. :D

FreedomPop here for $0/month (Android Smart Phone). I also have MagicJack for my home phone. The nice thing is that all calls and texts can go through my MagicJack app (for free) on my cell phone as long as I have WiFi. I have WiFi at work and most places have WiFi of some sort. I will use the FreedomPop (Sprint) service if I'm in the car or out of WiFi range, but that's not often. My cell phone also rings when someone calls my home phone, which is nice.

More to the saga: So after making arrangements with the new carrier (Straight Talk) last night, this morning I call Sprint to cancel my service and move my two cell phone numbers over to the new carrier. I was supposed to receive the new phones (2 Iphone 6 models) tomorrow, but I got an email from Straight Talk that said I would receive them Monday. That's OK. The problem is, in order to move service from the old Sprint phone to the new Iphones, you have to have the phone ID numbers. I won't have those until the new phones arrive Monday. In the mean time, my Sprint bill cycle runs from the 21st to the 20th of the next month. Today is July 20th, so tomorrow, July 21st, Sprint charges me for another month of service on my current plan. So If I activate the new phones on Monday, I'll be paying Sprint $100 for basically three days of cell service. The new carrier doesn't start charging me for service until the new phones are activated. So, I'm going to have to sit on the new phones until August 19th to activate them. Sprint will get one more month out of me, because if I have to pay them anyway, I'm not going to give them a $100 reward for treating me like shit. In the Florida News thread, there's a story about a guy who shot up a couple ATT trucks parked in front of his house. I don't condone it. I UNDERSTAND IT, but don't condone it.

I'm all set up with Straight Talk now. iPhone 5 SE for $159. $45/mo for unlimited talk and text. 8GB data up front at 4 LTE, then 2GB/mo at 2 LTE. Which is fine by me as I'm not using data for anything other than Spotify. Total was $220 out the door, phone is mine, can cancel service anytime I want to, and I had the phone within 24h with free overnight shipping. Waited about 1h for activation. Just had to input my Verizon account # and pin and the phone number was moved right over.

Call quality is great and I've had no issues. I've heard their customer service is really bad though.

LOVE the phone BTW. Perfect form factor for me, industrial look (Space Gray), squared edges, sturdy, and the iOS is real solid (my first time). I've found a way to go gray scale, invert colors and combine apps into one folder on my launch bar to clear the wallpaper screen for a pretty nice black monochrome look.

It's the perfect phone. Very pleased.

Do any of you guys use an IPhone 6? Anything good, bad or advice I should know about them?

My work phone is an Iphone 6S, although I don't use it that much. My personal phone is is a 5S and I really don't see the difference in the two, besides the screen being bigger on the 6.

6S has 3D Touch. 5S does not. 6S has better battery life. 6S has a better front facing camera. 6S is a bit faster and will probably be supported longer than the 5.

Really the only differences and not enough for me to go to the 6S.

My 5S had great battery life until I upgraded to IOS 9. From that point on I've had to use the phone in low power mode, which works fine for what I use it for. Instead of a newer version of the phone, I'd like to be able to go back to IOS 8.

I'm still sucking hind tit on an iPhone 4s. But it is time. Going to have to decide if I stick with Apple or make the switch.

I have the 6 Plus. Bought it when it came out. It's a really good phone. I have had no problems with it. I normally upgraded to the new iphone every year. But after getting this I was fine using it till now. I will probably upgrade this year with the new one that is coming out. But if I don't I think this one would be fine for another year or two.

Battery life has been pretty good. Get a good case and one of the glass screen protectors and it should last for a good while. I actually yanked mine off the nightstand this week and it scratched the glass protector on it. I've dropped it multiple times over the years and haven't scratched it until now. You will enjoy it I am sure.

I'm supposed to get the phones tomorrow via Fed Ex, but won't power them up until around August 15th when my Sprint month winds down.

Yep. Me too. Eyes aren't doing as well as they have in the past.

The key with sprint.

There are 2 types of stores. Corporate and franchise.
I know consumers do not care. But avoid franchise at all costs. They do not give a shit at those stores. They pander to the lowest common denominator, hence the description above.

As for deals, you will never get the same one as a existing customer. Carriers only care about new activations. It is dumb but that is the metric they love to use. Hence all the people in stores when you go now, they have the exact same stories about the other carriers.

If you want a deal on newer phones with your carrier you have to port out to a prepay flip phone and port back. I had to this when I worked for sprint. It is the least hassled way.
