Doesn't the idea of this happening pop into EVERYONE'S mind when getting on these rides? Drug addicts and transients are in charge of your safety.

Every time I see the carnies at these types of places I think the same thing. If I want to go on rides, I'll go somewhere like Busch Gardens, Universal or Disney.

When my kids were young I never let them ride any of the rides at the fair. So when my oldest was about 10 she asked why. I pointed out the tweaker with three teeth operating the ride and said "Because that guy put it together".

I will say the fair is a lot of fun for a while, time really flies while you're there.

I've never ridden a ride at a fair. Never will either. Sorry, i don't trust my life in the hands of some low-pay wrenchers who likely don't give two shits about their job.

Didn't give a fuck enough to torque the bolts to the appropriate specs? Or check to make sure the threads weren't worn?

There's simply too many guys out there that don't take pride in their work enough to thoroughly inspect the job they're doing.

Did they even use new bolts? After they're torqued, they can't be reused. You'd be surprised how many people don't know this.

Wouldn't doubt it if they didn't.

And quality grade 8 bolts. Not from the 10 cent bin at the local Walmart.

There is no way in hell they replace the bolts every time.

A really cool ride would be one that fails in some way on every tenth ride, but in a way that launches you into a net instead of concrete. You'd never know if you were getting the regular ride or the failure ride, and it would be quite the thrill.

That's just for TTY bolts where you need an exact tolerance, such as torquing a head onto a block, or other specialized bolts like galvanized or A490. TTY bolts are plastic to an exacting specification, so when they are torqued, they are in plastic tension by being slightly stretched. TTY bolts, once stretched by torquing cannot be torqued again because they are already stretched and at their plastic limit. Regular bolts, particularly higher grade bolts, torque at well below their plastic limit, so they haven't been stretched in the process.

Disgraceful. Even Christopher Columbus had a safer ride for his passengers...and that was in the 1400's...and they sailed it across the ocean!! Just preposterous!!!
