Veteran right-hander Jeremy Guthrie announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Monday.

Guthrie started one game this season for the Washington Nationals, allowing 10 earned runs in two-thirds of an inning on April 8. He wrote in the Players' Tribune that he knew "my major league career was over" after that outing.

He recounted, however, that a teammate in 2005 at Triple-A Buffalo, before Guthrie had been promoted to the majors, suggested that he retire after he was struggling. He instead persevered and started 276 major league games, including a Game 7 start in the 2014 World Series for the Kansas City Royals, which he lost 3-2 against the San Francisco Giants. He returned to the Royals in 2015, playing a role in their run to the World Series title, despite being left off the postseason roster.

He pitched for five teams in his career, but wrote "I'm Forever Royal!"

"What makes K.C. so special is the family atmosphere that exists throughout the organization," he wrote. "The difference that this approach made was immeasurable. Celebrating a world championship with a million friends in 2015 was unforgettable!"

He thanked his wife, Jenny, for being with him for all the twists and turns of his career.

"You rode the roller coaster of emotions through my college career, the minor leagues, and into the majors. You are the MVP of our family. You provided the stability at home that helped me accomplish so much on the field. It is not possible to express my full gratitude for your love and support. Thank you for everything, Jenny," he wrote.

Guthrie wrote that he is looking "forward to the additional time with my family."

"I'm excited to see what opportunities are out there. Ultimately, I'm just grateful that I am retiring now, as opposed to 12 years ago when it was first suggested," he wrote.

He finishes his major league career with a 91-109 record and 4.42 ERA.

I'm glad he got a ring before he retired.

Why Not?

Good for him. In the years to come, young Royals fans will look at his numbers and think "meh". He was so much more valuable than what the stats show.

Even though we lost game 7 in 2014. He was phenomenal that game. We just got Bumgarnered

He was phenomenal in Game 3, but he wasn't quite on his game for Game 7. Yost should have given him the quick pull after 3.

If nothing else, he was huge in August and September of 2014. He was one of our best pitchers for those two months down the stretch. Helped this team make the playoffs for the first time in decades.

Can he be our next manager? He's actually a pitcher and has a better grasp at when to pull pitchers than yost does

He also was a balla in his first two starts in the postseason. Holding the O's to 1 run over 5 was no easy task with their offense.

After Vargy and Big Game James lost the first two games of the home DET series, Guthrie pulled out an all-time gritty win. W/o that win who knows how the rest of the season plays out? We might not make the playoffs and none of this ever happens.

What was there for the shellackng Friday and painful loss Saturday? THIS GUY

Don't forget Guthrie's BALLS OUT start at Oakland while the A's were looking unstoppable. He went 6 shutout innings and a Raul Ibanez home run lifted us over the top in what may have been our most important win of the season.

Guthrie will always be a Royal. Honestly probably one of the most important people in Royals History.

I appreciate every second of Guts' time here. Got something from the nothing that was Jonathan Sanchez. No doubt that he was a clubhouse leader and a huge part of the clubhouse during his time here.

I will also say that he was at Fanfest this past year for one reason and one reason only- to visit the Yordano Ventura memorial and pay his respects. He is a 100% standup dude and I wish him the best.

Funny and had good impersonations. He bought Chipole for my friends in Arizona I wish he didn't get bent out of shape about his last outing but that is understandable.

Always appreciate JGuts. He set the tone on a lot of different occasions. I'm not sure I'll ever forget "These Os ain't Royal". Amazing.
