Talent doesn't really matter. Competitive spirit, obsession with learning/improving, and confidence are the most important traits for a franchise QB.

If you can't hit the broadside of a barn at more than 45 MPH, you're not going to make it in the NFL. Period.

Watson will play a lot of parlor tricks and win a few games in his first season of starting, but he will soon be quickly figured out and grounded to shit.

Didn't work for Tebow. Talent matters.

You need to have some natural ability. Tebow was 10/10 in intangibles but 3/10 in QB talent, and he still led Denver to the playoffs and won a playoff game.

Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Jeff George, and Jay Cutler had all the talent in the world and they didn't do much with it.

They better coach him how to get a Drew Brees laser arm, too.

That's the only way he's going to make it in this league as a longterm dependable starting option for a team.

When you throw at 45 MPH, you can get most of your shit through to your receivers. Except when you can't. Then you have problems.

Here's my honest take on Watson.

He could have a legendary CFL career. And I don't mean that as a disparaging way. Ask Doug Flutie if he values his CFL career and what it enabled him to do in the NFL as a backup/part time starter for a few teams here and there.

I envision Watson being like Doug Flutie. He's taller, so he'll have an easier time, but in terms of arm strength/velocity and downfield accuracy? Combined with their mobility? They're basically the same player.

Nothing wrong with that. In the meantime, however, he's got a ways to go if he wants to be Doug Flutie. And is that REALLY what you want out of your QB you traded up 20 spots to draft? A guy whose ceiling is Doug Flutie?

That's why I'm bashing him. He's not going to be a good NFL QB. He'll be an ELECTRIC CFL QB, perhaps even a legend. But that's about all I ever see him doing.

It all comes back to his arm though. Is it as bad as the numbers suggest?

We've had these discussions going back to the Mike Martz days, but I have never believed playmaking offsets INTs. It just doesn't. Tom Brady threw 2 interceptions last year. Two. Dos.

Russell Wilson threw 9 INT the year he won, and he didn't throw a single INT in the playoffs. Joe Flacco had one of the great postseasons of all time when he won. Didn't throw a single INT in the playoffs.

The only recent example otherwise is Peyton Manning. He was horrible the year Denver won a title, and he really didn't do anything to offset all his INTs. It was pretty the anti-example of the idea that QBs alone win titles.

Meanwhile, Brett Favre only won a single title. He sure helped end a few playoff runs with his INTs though.

How many of those playoff-ending INTs were unforced? How many were when the team's back was against the wall?

Brett Favre with his back against the wall would rather take a risk and lose the game. Alex Smith won't throw the pick, but also won't make the winning play.

I'd say TDs do a shit ton to mitigate INTs, but if you're just talking about explosive plays and the like then I'd probably agree.

A TD is automatically 6 points for your squad. An INT, especially with a defense like ours, may only lead to points for the other team sometimes.

Yeah but you're painting a black and white picture. You're making it seem like it's one or the other.

For example, you referenced Brady. In Superbowl, he threw a pick 6 thatput them down 3 scores. But he's a playmaker so he was able to offset that later on in the game. As long as you can make plays, you can make up for interceptions. If Osweiler was throwing 30TDs a year, even with the interceptions he would be considered a top QB.

I don't fall under the category that Alex Smith sucks, I like Smith and think he's above average and his career wins stand out as the only thing outstanding about him.

That said THANK GOD we didn't take Watson because I don't want to have the same Alex Smith conversations for the next decade with the same retread arguments.

And adding in a bunch of interceptions with his 49 velocity. Alex was 55 in the combine and Mahomes 60 and whew. That's nice. Watson will take years to avoid costly picks.

A few things:

The rookie QB's were playing against guys that will be out of the league in a month but they did show some poise and skill.

Our O-Line is waiting for our Center to come back. Then, C moves to RG, RG moves to LG, LG gets thrown off a cliff never to be seen again. They'll be fine. Not great, but better than last year.

I'm not sure if Paxton Lynch realizes that he's supposed to be playing football. He looked like he thought there was a volleyball game going on and wasn't sure why people kept running into him.
