I'm on the Northern Coast of CA and the air is filled with smoke everywhere. Ash on my car and the sun/moon is red. A friends house burnt down near hwy 299. Seems to be lots of fires everywhere. Anyone here dealing with this? We need some of that rain from Texas.

No danger for my town except air quality. Luckily we can run away from fire if necessary. The fires are far from my house but that second pic is right next to my house. There's a yellowish strange glow to the daylight tho. This has been going on for a week now.

We just suffered through the mariposa fires and whatever burnt has made my life an itching fucking nightmare. Its not as bad as it was, but it still out in the air, i need rain in the worst way. lol. I live SUPER close to that fire that happened a month or 2 ago.

NOw we have another one in the north valley. ughh! ash everywhere. Its really fun right now. Its a good thing, the heatwave is over now. We need some damned rain!

we are on 'alert' here in the blue mountains. gusts over 50kph, no rain for some time, mix in a few dropkicks and there are bound to be more fires here this year in NSW. two words. pine needles.

The view out behind my office just now. Should be a nice clear, blue skies day. Instead, I'm sitting in my office with my eyes and nose burning. We don't even have any big fires close to us currently. The Okanogan fires in central Washington are so big that they are sending this smoke and some ash over the mountains from 100 miles away.

Hot, hot days in Seattle yesterday, today, and tomorrow. My black car was grey this morning from ash and what should be a clear, sunny day has turned into an ominous looking dark orange. The smoke is heavy enough you can look at the sun without blinding yourself. The furniture on the patio smells like a campfire. I'll be happy when this heat goes away. The dogs are miserable and few people have A/C.

It's supposed to reach 99 today, better than 102 forecast yesterday.
But good gravy, the air quality....
Earlier this year were other fires that had the Portland area air quality worse than the 2 baddest Chinese cities.

We've lived here since '90. This last winter was by far the worst and now this summer is the same.

My wife's truck. This is at 7:15 am, the sun should be blinding from the left.

I certainly can't complain - Colorado has been relatively tame this year in terms of wildfires - but the smoke here yesterday was about as bad as it's ever been in terms of non-local fires. I had to shut the house up due to getting congested and my eyes watering.

Hope they can get things under control soon.

I mean, if you want a specific answer for this Burbank fire...

It snowed and rained so dang much that it catapulted California out of a drought. It snowed in the mountains so much this year that Mammoth closed for the ski season in AUGUST.

That's great for the drought, yay Superbloom in the desert.

However all that overgrowth in the mountains combined with the crazy stupid hot weather now and the fires were entirely predictable. The Santa Ana winds haven't even hit yet. This is the first of MANY upcoming wildfires in SoCal.

The biggest problem is that the western states will NOT cut back the bush - they want it to grow. So, when a fire starts, it has plenty of fuel.

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

My Wife and I just back from visiting friends in Wyoming. The smoke from the fires was so bad, you could hardly see.

Wildfires are good for the land even if they aren't good for homes or lungs.

It's why they let Yellowstone burn. It's part of the cycle.

Hell, I don't have a clue - couldn't even begin to tell you, but it's a fact. My Friend that lives in Wyoming - tells me that the brush hasn't been cut in years (Budget maybe?)
-
So apparently, when lightning strikes or some dumbass camper doesn't put out his fire, this is what happens.

Indeed. Here, they set the parks on fire (to burn back the overgrowth) every year - at least at Heritage Park in Olathe..

I see.

It'd be a helluva lot of brush to take care of. I don't imagine that's really possible considering most of our vegetation is dead brush.

SoCal does do controlled burns though. Quite often actually.

Remember the dust bowl of the 30s? That's one answer.

On a more personal note, one year way back on the farm we had some pretty draught type conditions. Growth was pretty bad. The neighboring farmers plowed everything under and looked down on my dad for not doing the same. He let the weeds, etc. all sit. Well, it stayed dry and get pretty windy as well. A lot of people lost topsoil, my dad gained topsoil. The farm consistently outperformed all surrounding farms for years after that.

Brush keeps topsoil in place. If you are wondering on why they don't cut back all the sagebrush in Wyoming, same reason plus throw in that it's pretty expensive to cut it all down.

Do you ever drive down the Mattole Rd? I think that's the most scenic, unique road in the US. It's not even labeled a scenic byway. I'm guessing because it couldn't really handle the traffic of a lot of tourists? Also it's always pretty windy right? And probably foggy? I hit it on a rare sunny day last Thursday I think.

I've been out that way a few times. I'll agree it is an awesome road with great scenery. It can be foggy but mostly towards the coast. Lots of weed grown out there so best not to drive down any other roads if you're not local. Property is very cheap in some parts mainly because it's in the middle of nowhere. It's probably the cheapest CA coastline left.

And personally, Montana needs to do a better job of random and structured logging to thin forested areas so these burns are better able to be fought in the future and hopefully won't burn as quickly. It's called selective logging I think. Looks like this.

This area is the best for outdoor activities! There are def some obese people here. Most don't dress up like they do in the rest of CA like LA/BAY. Women who are a 6 in the Bay area automatically become an 8 in this area lol. The weather is mild so lots of homeless people live here during the winter.

Just had a customer in the store who was telling me his daughters house burnt down in Santa Rosa. Said she went to bed at 3 AM thinking no way the fire was getting to her neighborhood and then she woke up a few hours later to a mandatory evacuation.

The fire was spreading at a rate of a football field every 3 seconds due to the wind. That sounds crazy!

My thoughts and prayers are with the folks with deceased or unaccounted for loved ones and for folks who've lost their homes and keepsakes. The air quality is very poor right now, with all the smoke and ashes in the air, to the point where even folks without respiratory conditions could be adversely impacted. I live in Davis and work in Sacramento. Davis is closer to the fires in Napa and Santa Rosa.

Californians are good people, though. Lots of brave, smart and hardworking folks out there looking after one another, including fire fighters, police, nurses, doctors, volunteers, and folks managing and staffing emergency shelters in schools, churches and other spaces. A worrisome thing about the location of the fires is that there are quite a few elderly in those parts of the state.

Thing about California, though, is that the growing's so good out here, that all kind of fuel builds up, setting the stage for these fires.

Sunday caught me off-guard with how strong the wind gusts were. I somehow missed the forecasts or something, but those winds were crazy strong, which dries the vegetation and other fuel even further and then sends embers flying once fires do start, making them spread rapidly.

It's almost like it's nature's way. Like these kinds of fires have been happening for centuries and result in the fertilization and replenishment of the forest but we've only been noticing it since man decided to build homes in the path of organic progress. Weird.

Yeah this sucks.

I'm headed other there for the Chiefs/Raiders game. My brother is an idiot Raiders Season Tix Holder. Anyway whenever I visit I take a spin through Napa Valley and enjoy some great restaurants. That all went to shit. My brother has actually left his house, its not currently in danger but the smoke is just awful.

Climate change. We were warned.

Yes the climate changes, but these events have always happened and before man climbed form the primordial ooze.

I saw Calistoga was under the gun. Where does that leave the Vermeil winery??? I do not know the area very well.

Prayers to everyone involved....

We should be good...yeah. At least for a while I think. It’s about 3 miles outside the town I work in. The wife comes back this weekend, so we’re going to get some bags ready just in case.

Dang! I’m being surrounded by fire on three sides, and the other side is an ocean. Looks like Sonoma is going to burn, but the valley is all grapes and no trees - might act as a big fire break for Petaluma. We might be the only town in the county to survive. Several of my friends have lost everything. Feels like I’m in a frikken Twilight Zone episode.

Damn I was there two weeks ago after the eclipse - in the Redwood Parks. Glad this shit waited.

I don’t have allergies and was ****ing with my eyes, too. It’s more smoke than air outside. I recommend a canister respirator - we don’t want to filter the smoke out of the air with our lungs.
