TOP 5 GRADES:

HB Kareem Hunt, 89.5 overall grade

S Eric Berry, 86.5 overall grade

EDGE Justin Houston, 85.2 overall grade

QB Alex Smith, 83.9 overall grade

LB Derrick Johnson, 82.9 overall grade

QB ALEX SMITH, 83.9 OVERALL GRADE

It turns out Alex Smith can go deep. He targeted four passes 20+ yards downfield Thursday night and connected on three of them for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Smith only had 521 deep passing yards in all of 2016! The Chiefs quarterback was on the money from start to finish, ending his night with an adjusted completion percentage of 84.8.

HB KAREEM HUNT, 89.5 OVERALL GRADE

After fumbling on the very first possession of the game, Hunt made up for his mistake in a big way. He broke six tackles on 22 touches and averaged 4.0 yards after contact per attempt. Hunt’s masterpiece though was a 78-yard wheel route in the fourth quarter, all but closing out the game for the Chiefs.

S ERIC BERRY, 86.5 OVERALL GRADE

Before going down to injury toward the end of the game, Berry was a key cog in Kansas City’s defense, drawing the difficult assignment of matching up with TE Rob Gronkowski, allowing two catches for 33 yards on four targets while staying in tight coverage on those two incompletions. Berry also got involved in the run game with two stops, including a big fourth-down stop in the first quarter.

EDGE JUSTIN HOUSTON, 85.2 OVERALL GRADE

While the Chiefs seemed content with playing conservatively with their pass-rush, Houston still managed two sacks, two hits, and a hurry on his 30 rushes. He beat RT Marcus Cannon handily for both sacks, and he also showed well in the run game, where he picked up a team-high four stops.

Signature Stat Spotlight: Quarterback Accuracy

After opening Sunday, Alex Smith leads all QBs in completion percentage adjusted for drops, throwaways etc. with 90.9 percent. Smith had two of his 35 pass attempts dropped, and threw another two away, meaning he was accurate on 30 of 33 attempts against the Patriots.

Hunt's catch put us up by 1 with 14 minutes left.

Two things to note:
Brady was 2-for-10 for 81 on deep (20-plus yard) passes, good for a passer rating of only 60.8
Has father time finally caught up to Brady?

And
It’s easy to point to the 75-yard Tyreek Hill touchdown and pin it on CB Stephon Gilmore, but it was most likely not his fault. It was the perfect offensive play call for the coverage with three vertical routes against two deep safeties leaving the defense caught in a bind.
Goes to show it wasn't just busted coverage that got Hill open- it was by design. Andy really is a genius and the play calling was phenomenal.

Actually, Hill grabbed Andy and told him that he could get open on that route against the defenses he was getting. And then Andy called it. Still, pretty cool.

Good for Alex and team. Winning over the SB current champs. Proud of the coach Reid and his team.

Hill actually told Reid what he saw and told him to run the play. He knew he could get open and what do you know Reid trusts Hill so much that they ran the play and boom TD. What a smart IQ Hill has

To paraphrase a few different NFL people talking about PFF

'You dont wanna put all your eggs in one basket, but they're another useful tool in your kit'

The grades were predictably positive after a win like that, but I have to wonder what else Smith could've done to raise his grade up around the others

80+% passing, big time yards, 4 scores, no picks, and a huge road win against the champs should probably get him a better score

Interesting read though, thanks for posting

Considered this as well, but ultimately dgaf about that specific number given. Their numbers are not going to "save" or burn down Smith's job. He's gone either way. Now, it's can he have a great final year in KC? :)

... and that quote? absolutely agree.

He's just raising his trade value, and we get a solid return in our investment of two firsts, two seconds, and one third that's we've invested in the two.

Maybe the PFF author had the Chiefs plus the nine points at the closing line.

I see what you mean but you're wrong if you think Alex bringgs two firsts let alone two firsts and two seconds. This game really did nothing in terms of raising value because any value he had before has not really increased at all.

You write about him as though he were an accomplished man, so, um what the **** has he done again?
