The NFL especially just isn't diverse enough. It's not fair!

We need some white cornerbacks, hispanic quarterbacks, female head coaches and transgender GMs if the NFL is going to win the modern progressive audience.

Also, cheerleaders should be done away with entirely. It's an occupation and encourages sexism and misogyny. And it's homophobic. Where are the male cheerleaders for crying out loud?

Looks like this data came from some shit sampling issues, but I wonder if the Great Recession curtailed interest in sporting events.

9-15 years old is prime time for developing hobbies and interests and if your folks couldn't afford tickets or even cable TV, you were probably more likely to find cheaper pastimes.

There was no Sunday Ticket when I was a kid.

I developed my passion reading back issues of SI, collecting football cards and watching the local broadcasts.

I'd bet your interest was was pushed much more by playing sandlot football in your neighborhood or football at recess in school.

Today, kids spend most of their time in their house or playing with a select friend or two on a "play date" instead of getting out and playing some ball with their friends. A paranoia about how "dangerous" it is for kids to run around the neighborhood alone in today's culture has spread even though it's not true. And kids aren't allowed to play rough in recess anymore, not to mention that my son's "recess" is 15 minutes.

You think being the fat kid who once threw a pick six the only time he got to play QB drove my interest? No, not really.

I think I read every back issue of SI at my jr high cover to cover, though. Good luck getting kids to do THAT today.

Are people me and your age going to be the last one's standing liking sports? It all of a sudden goes from late 20's, early 30's who love sports and then early 20's who hate sports? How does that happen? Seems like a big abrupt change. Football makes sense, but not soccer, baseball, basketball etc.

Much as I don't want to peg an entire generation as a bunch of pussies, I think there might be something to an idea that these younger kids don't like sports as a product of missing out on socializing with peers in-person because of vidya and because they've been helicopter parented and not allowed to roam free.

Also I wonder if there's a drastic difference between kids born 1995-2001 and 1985-91 where the former group is more likely to be an only child in the family compared to the latter (and earlier generations too). More kids might mean their parents are more inclined to get them out of the house in their elementary / middle school years compared to parents of only children.

My parents believed video games would rot my brain. The only "console" I ever had growing up was an old school Game Boy that my aunt got me for a birthday, and my parents were super pissed at her.

It ended up working out fine, because my folks were determined that I know how to operate a computer from a young age, which means I played a LOOOOOOT of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. For some reason they didn't give a shit about that because I also used the computer for school. Whatever.

Anyway, to this day, I don't own a Playstation, Xbox, or whatever the fuck it is people my age are supposed to play with in their spare time. A bunch of my friends are big into video games, and I pretty much look at them and go, "Don't fucking care." Because I don't.

It's possible sportswatching habits occur when kids see dad drinking a beer and watching the game. Or when their junior high/high school sports team friends talk about superstars. That's just not happening. Dads are doing other shit with their time even if they have a passing interest in sports. Kids are talking about bullshit like Harambe and video games and other crap on the internet.

Dunno. It's just a blip. Doesn't make it a trend just yet.

Less kids are going out for sports now a days.

1. Society is getting poorer and some of the sports (baseball) can get expensive. This is even more evident in the urban black communities.

2. Kids are too plugged in now a days. I grew up on Nintendo/Super Nintendo/N64 so I'm guilty too, but not to the extent of what it's become now. I was still playing outside about 90% of the summers.

Actually, I've read legit studies that social services for kids like kids camps are struggling because kids would rather be at home playing video games. It's not just TV. Kids are playing outside less. I can't help but wonder how much the concussion issue has parents stopping their kids from playing certain sports. Even in soccer, kids leagues are paranoid about concussions.

Nah man. In college that's where a pretty good portion of beer drinking (and pussy chasing - my now wife loved watching football and was/is a rabid KU fan) happened. Games were social events. In my group of friends anyway. I I spent time at bars and to a lesser extent too, but college is where I got to LOVE sports. It's the NOW generation. If they want to watch a show, they can start it now. Netflix, Hulu, Kodi, etc. No running to the store to get a DVD, etc. If they need info for a report, bang you have it right now with the internet. If you want to talk to your girlfriend, you have a cell and probably have been texting all day. It's hard for them to unplug from it. Social Media, texting, etc. is almost an all consuming thing.

All the overload of media and different options makes sitting through a 3 hour game really hard for them. Then if the game isn't close, forget about it.

They're fat. They never exercise and have very low testosterone.

#notall

I shouldn't have to explain this is a pattern and not something universally true of all people of that age group, but low IQ lazy minded people have reduced us to saying 'not all' when talking about demonstrable patterns within population groups. Decide for yourself who is to blame for that.

It's barely true at all. Gen Xers and Baby boomers have significantly higher rates of obesity amoung their age population. You know, the generations who helped prop up the Wal-Mart's and Applebees of the world.

Millennials are pussy's.

I think it's not all millennials. It's early millennials and all of new generation z that hate sports. I'm an old millennial and I love sports, so do all my friends and everybody I grew up with. Most of them do also like killing zombies and whatever online game there is, but they like sports way more. They get pissed when I try to play their video games and get completed waxed.

I've received more enjoyment from playing videogames in a room with my close friends or fraternity brothers more so than playing online solo.

Granted, the heyday of my online time was playing Homeworld over a 56k, so..

I'm an old millennium too and most of my friends love and follow at least one sport.

Some are still into video games but not many. I never was.
