This is great stuff. Props to the Locked On Chiefs podcast for hosting PFF. Between them, Chief in the North, Amateur Hour, the A Team podcast, and the Arrowhead Pride podcast, this is really the golden age for Chiefs podcasts.

Anyway, the dude from PFF made lots of interesting comments (the Chiefs play man coverage more than anyone in the NFL; the OL is "borderline top 10" but not enough to really take over games), but the most interesting to me is the comments he made about Mitchell.

Here they are, in their entirety:

Q: One guy that I was critical of early, and I'm starting to come around myself so you're not the only one that's making adjustments here, Terrance Mitchell is the second-most targeted corner according to PFF in this league, and he's given up the most yardage.

But, he still grades out very well. He doesn't give up a whole lot of rating against, so explain to us how, when you guys are doing that, do you take the fact that Marcus Peters is across from him into consideration when you're working grades, or how do you all look at his body of work as a whole?

PFF: Yeah obviously some cornerbacks just get targeted more. You can't really help it as a cornerback when you get targeted. You have to-- you will give up more completions. If someone like Richard Sherman was targeted on every single play of the game he'd end up giving up 150 yards at least in the game.

But at the same time, you have to look at the yards per target, and so [Mitchell] is still allowing fewer than 10 yards a target, which is fairly good at the cornerback position. He has given up over 300 yards, but on 33 targets, so over 10 targets a game is a lot of targets.

And his completion percentage against is only 51.5% so that's, you know, when you're around the 50 mark at the cornerback position, that's a-- an elite number is sub-50, so he's right at that. The fact that he gets targeted a bunch, he has two picks, he has three pass breakups, so he's been good in that area. He does have a handful of penalties, but that's gonna happen in the NFL when you play man coverage.

So I think what we've seen from him so far has been encouraging, and you need someone across from Marcus Peters who's going to be able to hold up with a high volume of targets because teams are wising up to the fact that maybe targeting Marcus Peters whatever it was, 118 times his rookie year, is not a smart decision.

I don't think Mitchell is having a bad season, but I do think Sutton could help him out. Too many times he puts Peters on one side of the field, instead of having Peters shadow the #1 WR. Teams have figured this out, and are putting their best WR on Mitchell's side. Having your #1 WR on the #2 CB is a mismatch that most teams want.

They don't switch corners. It's not gonna happen that often I don't think

Having Peters on one side, enables Sutton to roll coverage to the other if needed. It has its benefits, as well as its weaknesses.

Or maybe, just maybe, these same people don't know what the fuck to watch or what's happening on each play.

He had a bad first game before coming up with that big play at the end.

Hes gonna be targeted a lot, that was never really a secret to anyone.

If he plays like the last 4 games last yr and continues to improve hell be just fine.

Gaines however....is fuckin terrible and shouldnt even be on the ps.

Losing Nelson sucks. CB depth is a problem. I wouldnt be opposed to drafting a CB as early as they can in next years draft.

Dude's almost exactly what Sean Smith was when he was here. A physical brawler of a corner that isn't at all fun to play against. He probably makes more plays than Smith but because he's also the 2nd CB (as opposed to Smith playing opposite of ass) he also gets a lot more targets.

So he'll get beat more but also make more plays than Smith did. I think the guy's looked awfully good given his style of play.

He's never gonna be a visually appealing player out there. He's just gonna be a hard-nosed Hasty type who does the dirty work and makes plays. I'm hopeful we can get him extended on a 3-year deal or so this off-season for around $4-6 million per. It'll seem high but he'll earn that and then some, IMO.

Gaines hasn't been nearly as bad as CP would lead you to believe. He is a valuable asset being that he's on a cheap rookie contract and can play both outside and inside. He also made a couple of really nice tackles on Sunday, one of which prevented a big play by Gordon. The fact that people think he shouldn't be on the roster is moronic. He's better than a lot of other teams backups.

He was awful in games 1 and 2.

Game 3 was the only game I've seen from him where I thought he was passable. He's still easily the weakest link in the secondary. He's a roster player but not a good one.

Eh I don't know that I agree

Couple plays he's given up have looked a little OPI to me so I don't really fault him there

He's constantly chasing the play. He doesn't look instinctive out there at all.

I've only seen him from the stands once so I can't give a much stronger statement than what anyone else has seen on TV. But in the Eagles game he was losing way more often than he was winning and the balls just weren't always coming his way. As you watched the routes unfold and found the open man, it was usually #23 running along 2 steps behind him.

Gaines might be the most underappreciated player on this Chiefs team. He is possibly our 4th corner and you see tons of people criticizing him when in fact he is not playing bad at all, especially not for a 4th CB. When exactly did the Chiefs have a better #4CB than Gaines? And the guy is still on his rookie contract so not much $$

I don't think he's been awful, especially after the last game. The guy hasn't played all that much and he is playing across from Peters. The DPI calls will slow down, especially if the zebras will show some balls and start calling OPI. I see him as a much better option than Gaines at this point.

Same reason that people hate on Albert Wilson. Because there have been times due to injury and/or poor depth, that they have been asked to play above their heads and they didn't do that great. But now that they are both the 4th option at their position, as they should be, people want them gone.

Ok Im new on here but i really think y'all need to give Gaines a break. He came back from his acl tear last year and was thrown back out there not healthy. That could mess with any players head when you know your not ready but have no choice. Do you really think Nelson will be any better when he comes back? Lol It should be interesting.
