Unless you've got a legit HoF kicker, it's not exactly worth paying multimillions for a kicker.

Don't wanna lose a game because your kicker sucks? Score more touchdowns.

From AP

“[Butker] is a good kicker,” special teams coordinator Dave Toub said Friday. “He was our number one guy coming out this year as a rookie, we had him ranked number one. So if we were going to draft a guy he was going to be the guy we would probably target. So we felt good about him coming out, we just weren’t looking for a kicker at that time. It’s funny how things work and now all of a sudden we’ve got him. We’re happy with him, he’s a good kid.”

There ya go. Sounds like Toub loved him back in the spring.

It's hard to fathom how much better kickers are today. Look at Jan Stenerud. A HOF kicker. He is 1th in percentage made at 64%. And Nick Lowery, probably the best kicker in the league during most of his career, is 6th.

Agreed. Is kind of amazing though to see his percentage made was pretty high. Kind of magnifies what a gigantic choke artist he was. Even with a good, reliable leg he had a pitiful percentage on extra points. That's just a guy who can't handle pressure.

He flat out lost the San Diego game in 2013 and he was bad in others.

Not a fan, never was, never will be.

His 78.6 Field Goal percentage in 2013 is what cost him his job.

That was probably the most meaningless kick he could have made in a live regular season game.

We were locked in the 5 seed and starting backups at every position.

He missed one in regulation and one in overtime.

Regardless of the implications, his FG percentage was 78% that season, which is why he wasn't on the 2014 roster.

I thought the guy sucked.

I'm pretty sad about Santos being gone, but this just made the kicking game a whole lot more interesting. With Santos I assumed every attempt within 45 yards was an easy make. I'd get up to walk to the kitchen when he was kicking because he was money. Now, it's back to edge of the seat praying.

So are Hali and Nelson PUP? Then cutting Santos seems a bit premature...what if this new guy tanks....A rookie kicker on a team with SB aspirations is not something I'm crazy about.

Meh, these guys are just treading water until Mahomes saves everything.
Rest them, age them like fine wine [that's how it works, right?], experiment a little with a skill position or two.
We've drafted our SB guarantee, so if we need a kicker before Mahomes starts, we can always draft one in the first round.

I think this is as much about giving Buttkicker confidence he is out guy as it is anything else.

Santos wasn't going to be kicking anytime soon and if they want to pick him back up later they can.

He's gonna need it too, seeing his first action in KC on MNF.

Yeah, we got a little spoiled with him. But strangely, for as accurate as he was, I still don't know who he is as a late game kicker. We play a lot of close games but he hasn't had to ice many games. He didn't have his first walkoff until 2016, which is hard to believe.

The guy essentially ended his career.

According to the star's article he injured himself on his last warm up kick before the roughing the kicker thing happened. whatever the truth of it is i'm saddened by the loss of such a good kicker. i loved his name and even had a superstitious chant before he attempted any big kick. this sucks. i understand he has a substantial injury but fuck letting him go over it. he came through for the team in some really crucial games. the whole thing makes me sick.

This a million times and that walk off was a "doink". Good move IMHO.
