It has happened, what comes to light comes to light.

If there is anything to responsibly hope for, it's that his reasons are so retarded and individual that it sobers/shames 24/7 talking heads into not even discussing them.

There probably isn't an alternative explanation or rationale that wouldn't serve to inspire some and inflame the passions of others.

Not at all. He was shooting a automatic machine gun which a 240 is. However he probably did have to reload. Unless he linked the ammo together. That sound is not from a regular rifle. It was definently of some type of automatic machine gun.

I know exactly what a 240 is..carried one all over Afghanistan..it sounds nothing like a 240 and the bursts were nowhere near 300

Probably had to reload huh..is that why there was long pauses in the gunfire..after his 300 round bursts there General

Honestly, I’m glad I wasn’t part of the group that flew in yesterday...I like Aldeans music and probably would have tried to get tickets for the show.

What luck...the original conference was supposed to be in Orlando and was cancelled for the hurricane and they rescheduled it for vegas and this happens the night before I get there.

Conceal weapons without a permit. There are basically no rules on owning any type of gun or carrying them around except for automatic weapons in Nevada.

Why Not?

I'm not sure if it is an issue with money. I think it's more an issue with classic American "that won't happen to me" thinking. I mean, the fact that there's not an armed guard(at $14-$15 per hour, relatively minimal)at every school in America is baffling. We've had multiple school age children get blown away while playing at school and anyone could walk into almost any school this very day and go tee off on some 6 year olds. Then hysteria, media, outrage, memorials....next week "back to school kids!" with maybe an officer at that school moving forward. For whatever reason, as a society we just don't want to emphasize security as a top priority. Except kind of at the airport and at some sporting events

I think this is a good explanation. For me personally, I won't go to a movie in the afternoon or night...only the morning when people not many people are there.
After the Colorado incident, I get anxiety being in big crowds like that with no quick way out such as a movie theatre.

You'd think they'd take the lead and market a safe approach. I would be happy to pay 2-3 more dollars if it meant that the theater had a metal detector in use.

Pretty good take on this. I travel a lot in Honduras and every gas station, hotel, mall, and moderately nice restaurant has at least one and usually multiple guards wearing body armor and armed with shotguns or automatic weapons. Granted, those guys aren't making $14 per hr but it's all relative. Security is a necessity there and businesses just pony up for it. It's a cost of doing business there, but here we are not used to having to provide basic security on that level.

I'd say for the smaller places, sure. But the hotels, mall, etc. it's dual purpose. Those places are poor robbery targets but more attractive for violence against people. They don't have issues with terrorism or mass shootings for no reason, but drug violence is constant. People go to those places because they are safer than places without. This is what I hear from people who live there. Fine to be cynical about it, but those who live with it daily value that security.

The suspected gunman behind the Las Vegas massacre made several large gambling transactions in recent weeks, according to law enforcement officials.

The transactions by Stephen Paddock, who lived in Mesquite, Nevada, about 80 miles northeast of Las Vega, were in the tens of thousands in Las Vegas, the officials said.

It was not immediately clear if those transactions were losses or wins

Regarding the "metal detectors and security guards everywhere" discussion, I always feel it's important to point out that overall murder rates in the U.S. are at historic lows (https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/murder-rates-nationally-and-state#nat1970) these days. It's ticked up a smidge since 2014, but it's still nowhere near the levels that were seen in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Are you more likely today to be killed in a mass shooting compared to the past? Probably. But your overall likelihood of being hurt is still extremely low. Don't let events like this keep you from going out and living life (or being so protective of your kids that they don't learn how to live life in the first place).

The FBI has spoken with Eric Paddock, the brother of the gunman, at his home in central Florida. Paddock has also given a few interviews at greater length.
“He was my brother and it’s like an asteroid fell out of the sky,” Paddock told CNN. He said he last spoke to his brother when Stephen wanted to check in on their mother after Hurricane Irma.
Paddock expressed shock and horror to CBS that his brother could commit such a crime. He had “no religious affiliation, no political affiliation, he just hung out”, Paddock said.
“He’s not an avid gun guy at all. The fact that he had those kind of weapons is just – where the hell did he get automatic weapons? He has no military background or anything like that. He’s just a guy who lived in a house in Mesquite, drove down and gambled in Las Vegas. He did stuff. Ate burritos.”
Paddock said that when he heard the news he became scared for Paddock’s girlfriend, Marilou Danley, worrying that “he might’ve hurt her too”.
Police have said Danley was out of the country, unharmed and speaking with investigators.

Indeed. As a person who knows little about guns, i wouldnt even know what kind of gun would be effective from that distance. I suppose there are books and websites you could read, but there are lots of logistical issues shooting people from 350 ft up and what looks like nearly 1/4 mile away.

Its very very bizzare, they guy would have had to spent a lot of time and effort planning this one would think so its not like he just snapped one day and pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Yeah, this is weird. The logistics involved - hauling all those rifles and all that ammo around, in a way that obviously arose no suspicion. Just hauling a few hundred rounds and a couple of rifles to the range is a pain in the ass. I also find it hard to believe that this guy previously demonstrated no interest in guns, yet was able to pull this off.

Don't buy the "snapped" angle, either. You don't snap and then spend days and thousands of dollars on equipment planning this shit.

I'm not shocked he could do this. Any one of us could do this if we had the interest and could source the firepower. Shooting down into a huge crowd from an elevated posiition is not skillful. It is the proverbial fish in a barrel. People didn't run because they expoected the fire was ground base and were not sure which direction to run. Even during the reloading pauses you hear people in the videos hesitant to move, some still in disbelief it was real.

Now, if these were full auto, then that is a real question how a novice got them, as while they are legal with permits, it's not a simple process. If it was bumpfire, that easy to modify by reading the instructions or watching youtube.

Why Not?
10-02-2017, 10:31 AM
What society has metal detectors in every public building? North Korea? I mean, maybe we need to go in that direction, but it's not like hotels have had any reason to think they need this kind of security.

Besides, think about it -- hotels are nothing more than places where massive numbers of people with bags go in and out all the time. You want TSA level checkpoints to get into your hotel room every time you go there?

I guess if you squint hard enough you could take away from my post that I was loosey advocating for metal detectors everywhere. I assure you that is not the case. I am more pro armed security than I am metal detectors.

how so? He had the room for 4 days, carrying a few pieces of luggage on a cart is hardly difficult. Hell, he could have tipped a bellhop to do it for him.

The only real planning part was identifying the target, and ensuring he could get a room overlooking it. I read elsewhere a rumor that his gf was a MB employee, so perhaps his knowledge was helped by that, or he used her ID to gain access.

even "normal guys" tend to have some sort of strong beliefs though if they do something like this. A history of anger, or strong fundamentalism, something.

they didn't need to. If it was full auto belt-fed as some speculate (hard to believe he could lay hands on one as a novice, but we'll see). the fire rate is upwards of 500 rounds a minute. Hell, even a bumpfire AR15 can do the same in the right hands, so even half that is easily achievable by a novice. You can see in the video, people are still laying there for over 2 minutes while he fires

I know a decent amount about guns and yes there are things like bump fire that makes them basically fully auto.

Which also makes accuracy much lower.

What I am curious to know is how many rounds this guy fired. Without a belt fed type set up there is going to be a lot of reloading involved (not that that takes very long). It sounds like he had a shit ton of guns though so he may have just had a few mags for each.

The amount of cold blooded planning and methodical tactics he used makes this even more disturbing to me.

I've fired several versions of bump fires. You do not get that rate of consistent fire from a position to attack at 300-500 yards without sending thousands and thousands and thousands of rounds down range to get it figured out. Even then, they produce a very inconsistent rate. The initial burst slows and regains momentum at one point. Makes me think it's an old and mechanical unit fighting through the heat. The next burst sounds like a completely different weapon.

A gambling junking in deep can probably push around the right kind of money to get what he needed.
