View Full Version : Chiefs Alex Smith Was Clutch

Like him or not, he turned the game around when Washington was kicking our ass early and he was key to the game-winning drive late.

This is the college Alex Smith coached by Urban Meyer who dared to throw deep and wasn't afraid of double coverage.

San Fran almost ruined his career. Their trash, our treasure.

Exceptional game from Smith. The pass protection was pretty lousy tonight, and Smith had zero pants shitted. Maybe one of his best "gritty" games.

Good game. As far as the prognosis on Smith beyond this season, the only thing that matters to me is his play in the postseason. I don't care if he throws 30 touchdowns and 4,000+ yards. If he goes 1 and done in the playoffs this year he needs to be gone.

Here's what I love about "back to the wall" Alex Smith. You know the huge difference for me? Decisiveness. Biggest area we saw that was running. We've seen Alex many times dance out of the pocket and get some yards. Today, he decisively saw running room and he took it. Time and time again.

He threw like a good QB today. But that was the best running game I've seen from Alex Smith in years. And there's a part of me that wonders if his concussion last year has made him nervous to run around too much.

For any reasonable Smith critic, it's because we saw moments like today where Alex looks like a totally different QB. We know he's capable of this type of performance every single week. But it seems like our defense has to give up 10 quick points or we have to wait for the 4th quarter for this version of Alex Smith to kick into gear. We know he's capable of doing it every single week. Ever the optimist, I'm going to keep hoping that this is the week Alex realizes he has the ability to carry the team week after week.

He deserves credit, incredible work. But I'll say it again, I don't care a whole lot what he does during the regular season. This is all meaningless if he loses in the first game in the playoffs again. We've won plenty of games the past 4 years with nothing to show for it. Winning lots of regular season games is nice and all, but it's not enough.

You could see the playoff loss coming last year though. He was terrible during the regular season. Games like today were few and far between.

He had maybe two or three games last year where he played like this.

So far it's been two in the first four games where you can sit back and say "yeah we could win a Super Bowl with that guy."

Because the defense hasn't been balling out in these games.

Granted he has to keep it up but the offense seems to have reached a tipping point of having so many playmakers it can almost completely support a smart QB with limited arm talent. Guys like Wilson have a lot more opportunity to make plays now with Hill and Kelce drawing gobs of coverage and Hunt scaring the shit out of defenses to boot. So they get wide fucking open.

That defense was clubbing the shit out of our offense in the first quarter and they completely rebounded. Completely.

That's championship stuff.

Also the bad defenses are going to get roasted by this unit. It's going to be fun.

Playcalling has some to do with it. But the fact is, confident Alex decisively and quickly gets rid of the ball and attacks the running lanes. Game manager Alex dances a bit in the pocket and takes coverage sacks. I am not a detractor. If I saw last night's performance every week from Alex, I'd be a huge fan. I'm not saying he has to light up scoreboards. I'm talking about 3 to 4 quarters of football where he takes over games instead of managing them

He deserves credit, incredible work. But I'll say it again, I don't care a whole lot what he does during the regular season. This is all meaningless if he loses in the first game in the playoffs again. We've won plenty of games the past 4 years with nothing to show for it. Winning lots of regular season games is nice and all, but it's not enough.

idk, I'll take 17 weeks of great football and a playoff appearance + win here or there than years of being the laughingstock of the league :hmmm:

They'll let some guys walk and cut expensive veterans like Tamba, DJ and Colquitt then backload Smith's extension.

It's the wrong move to make a guy you spent three picks on to sit for four or five years, but it's what's going to happen.

I get that you're butthurt about being wrong that the Chiefs would finally take a QB in the first rd, but seriously quit getting more butthurt about Mahomes sitting. This is not going to affect the plan with Mahomes. Alex himself knows that this is likely his final season.

The list of mobile QB's who are elite at 35 or older is a very small list. Worst case scenario is Alex plays through his contract.

Team friendly contract only goes so far. Alex isn't playing and risking injury for less than $10 million a year. He'd likely command $18 million a year or more on the open market by my estimation, so I doubt he would go much below that. Let's put him at around $16 million a year. That still significantly hampers our ability to do anything else to keep current players or add new talent.

But you are correct, if Mahomes is ready (as ready as you can be without seeing regular season action), Smith is gone. I see no reason to believe Mahomes won't have taken a huge leap by next year, so I simply don't see any way Smith is kept.

I'm trying to be civil here, but if you really think Smith is in the realm of Aaron Rodgers you're retarded. And as always, after 5 years here Smith's regular season stats will likely factor very little into their decision next year. It doesn't take a genius to see that Smith's failure to guide this team deep into the postseason factored into their decision to finally take a 1st round QB. If Smith fizzles out again this postseason he's not going to get another year. 1-3 playoff record is pretty poor, 1-4 is abysmal. Even winning one game and losing in the AFC Championship game shouldn't be enough. It has to be super bowl or bust for Smith this year.

Alex Smith could win the MVP/
He could lead this team to the SB, and win it, if he continues to play at this level.

He's playing at an elite level right now, which I have known he is capable of doing.

But he's been a giant pussy for years leading up to this season, and it took a real challenge to his job to get him to step up his game to this level.

For me, I don't give a rat's ass how well he performs this year, he needs to be gone after this season.

If he feels there's no longer a challenge, he probably reverts back to the pussy he has always been.

Smith was never a pussy.

He was afraid of taking risks when the easy play was there.

Alex is one of the most sacked QB's in the league and you don't see him fold like Rivers, Cutler, or Dalton when he's getting hit consistently. In fact, despite our line allowing him to get beat up he's one of the top 3 QB's in the entire league right now.

And he's clutch WHEN IT MATTERS. When we need 3rd down conversions or 4th quarter drives to win the game...

You are only speaking for yourself here. There is a very good chance that you and maybe a dozen others are on this island alone. The Chiefs are a relevant, and well regarded football team now. A consistent top 5 AFC contender. You'd be surprised at how few people even keep count of who was in the SB year to year. Most people can only bother to remember the last one or two SB winners.. and any further thought is rare and forgettable.

HELL YES, this, all the way. People want to spend the months arguing over Mahomes, whether Smith gets extended, will we get over the playoff humps, blah ****ing blah... That be their right to, but no thanks. Rather just enjoy the ride, and let each week take care of itself.

That's the pussy approach.

Might be better to just call it this then. Calling him a pussy is not the same as calling his approach to the game pussified. It instantly puts your assessment in a poor light, as anyone who has played knows football is not a game for pussies. It's sudden, violent and damaging as ****.

I think the sack thing might be the fact that generally when we get one, we don't know make the first down, as the next play would be a run of maybe 3 and then a WR screen for 3, then punt. So, maybe not a turn over, but it was ending drives.

Oh no, man, I get that. It usually is a drive killer for us, but my point was, there are more drives later to come. So, as long as the defense isn't allowing TD after TD scored against us? we can show some patience on earlier drives stalling out. It's frustrating to eat sacks, and not take shots early, but no doubt it has helped us not turn the ball over. It just works.. for now.

I'll take this Alex Smith every day of the week. It's just such a different QB when he plays with his hair on fire. He played like every single drive mattered.

How long are you going to hold onto this one?

The 2 best games he's played in his entire career have been this season and you're still trying to say that it's just the same guy, but he's being pressed more.

As though he wasn't pressed repeatedly over prior seasons and simply didn't make the play like he made to Wilson. He's had that opportunity a dozen times over the last couple of years and hasn't hit on it. Even when we've desperately needed him to pull a game from the fire, he's been unable to.

He's presently playing as the best possible version of Alex Smith. He's not a different type of quarterback but he's absolutely a different quarterback.

Honestly, I rank this game up there with last year's San Diego and Denver wins. Deadly perfect strikes downfield when we needed them. That throw to Kelce with pressure was brilliant, as was the throw to Wilson for the go ahead field goal.

Every now and then the years spent with Herm make me say something I hate (especially when combined with the Alexisms we've had over the last couple years), but here goes...

That throw to Kelce flipped the field. It was an invisible touchdown. It set up the punter.

{drinks bleach}

No points were scored but it allowed us to finally back up the Redskins a little. And unsurprisingly, they immediately hit a big play and then snagged another 1st down, IIRC. The ended up stalling at around our 40 and were forced to punt. That was the drive we answered with a TD.

If Smith doesn't stand in there, take the hit and get that ball downfield to Kelce, we end up punting from our own 15ish and that quick strike and additional 1st put them right back in the red zone. A healed defense could've easily folded and suddenly we're down 17-0 and the game's almost certainly over.

That play may have been more important than the play to Wilson. It gave them a second to breath and gave the defense enough breathing room to get the 'Skins off the field. Then we answered in the next drive and it was off to the races.

That play may end up forgotten because of the Wilson play but it was every bit as difficult and every bit as critical.

I dont know how team friendly he can get ...Hes already supposed to get what 19 million?

I think it really boils down to performance through January and beyond.

Results or adios.

If dude wins afccg he stays probably....for one more season.

If not I dont see the point in spending 15+ million on him when we can get weapons for mahomes...

Couldn't agree more. But the Pats have been moving Bradys money around for years. I mean they can drop Alex's cap hit and move the money to a bonus if they want. But I agree. Unless this team is at the very least in the AFCCG Alex is on another team next year.

And all it took was Patrick Mahomes. Behold the power of Mahomes.

Competition is great at any position.

Every now and then the years spent with Herm make me say something I hate (especially when combined with the Alexisms we've had over the last couple years), but here goes...

That throw to Kelce flipped the field. It was an invisible touchdown. It set up the punter.

{drinks bleach}

You know what's funny about that play? I mentioned when I first came here that Alex's best throws in SF were seam throws to Vernon Davis. He's really good at that pass.

He's not an elite QB but he's having an elite season so far.

Deion Sanders has him as a elite qb

also and I could be way off here but I'm trying to put myself in alex's position

He doesnt know when he will get hurt or how long he has left...

If he keeps playing lights out this year, the end of this year may be his last chance to get realy huge money and sign another 60-75 million dollar 4 year type deal with someone.

I know there are a lot of homers and true fans who think that "alex is already rich" but this is world changing amounts of money here. And I mean lets face it..if someone is willing to pay that much for him then he is worth it...I just do not see the chiefs being willign or able to do that...

and guess what I mean , if he keeps balling the **** out and some team out there is willign to shell out that kind of bread...I say more power too him..

You (he) cannot possibly predict what will happen , health wise or whatever to him...so him just playing out another year and rolling the dice with his career might not be the smartest move for him...

I mean unless the chiefs are willing to sit mahomes for 3-4 more years it seems like Smith has game left in him and no desire to stop playing.

Who caught the 2 most important balls on the game winning drive?

You made the idiotic claim that Alex has been winging it with no name players, to which I showed you is completely incorrect as 70% of his passing yards have gone to Hill, Kelce and Hunt.

Now you want to make this conversation about 2 passes in one drive of one game.

Keep changing the argument! You can never be wrong that way! :thumb:

out of curiosity, lets just imagine a situation (not the chiefs) where you have a QB in his final few years , that the head coach isn't 100% certain they are going to extend the contract....that might be able to be traded...that they may want to negotiate with in one of several ways: possibly get them to play for less, or negotiate a new contract ...etc etc etc

in other words there are various possibilities of keeping or not keeping this "imaginary" QB , and meanwhile the team also has a young , hotshot but unproven QB on the bench that will be the future of the team at some unknown time.

Now, what exactly would you say to the press in that situation so as to keep the trade value, not piss off the player, keep open the possibility of an extension, etc etc etc?

I mean what could you say that was any different from this? Just asking for a friend...

haha

also, his whole argument is false because the thing that people discuss about Brady when referring to how many WR's he throws to is TD's.

Brady has thrown so many TD's so so many different WR's its crazy..

Whereas we have gone a whole season without throwing any td to any receiver..

Theres just no comparison here to be made, it is grasping at straws and straw men...

I've said this before but Patrick Mahomes II can beat out Alex Smith for starting job next TC & preseason. It's always harder to beat the incumbent but if they had equal time and bot got to play with the starters I think Patrick will showcase why they drafted him and take over.

Fucking bullshit to continue another season with Alex Smith anything short of winning the Super Bowl.

Pat has the physical tools but he needs to make pre snap adjustments, identify blitzes, read coverages. It’s more than just chucking it deep

He's a long-time Alex hater, and IMHO, a 49ers fan pretending to be a Chiefs fan. That one, admittedly, is yet to be proven. (had to throw that last bit out there, since some people are really uptight about allegations and evidence, lol)

I agree

This is true. I think the quote was "I love Alex. He can hang with me till I retire."

ROFL

.. but if he stays healthy all year, and if they get through the AFCCG victoriously, I can see him wanting to finish out his current contract. That's about it though.

.. and maybe Andy was thinking of a coaching gig for Alex instead of more years playing... it's possible.

Would be fine by me, but I really don't see it. I think it was Dane who alluded to how much time and focus such jobs require.. and maybe he wants that.. but I'd think he would rather spend that time on his wife, young kids, and Foundation.

.. but whatever. If it's really what he wants, so be it.
