He's got a bunch of good ones. My favorite is probably Runnin' Down A Dream, which wins by nose over Free Fallin', Last Dance With Mary Jane, and Into the Great Wide Open.

Runnin' Down a Dream is a great pacing song for actual running, by the way.

So many good songs but I finally decided that a few of the greats are similar enough to songs by other artists that I would settle on the one that I felt was the most Tom Petty of the bunch. I had to pick one that personifies (to me) what I like about the artist. So I went with Free Fallin'.

When I hear the words "American Girl" I think of the Tom Petty cadence. Upon review, the song is not that catchy. He says the words 3 times and it's hardly valid as a chorus.
Taylor Swift took a shot at the song and it still wasn't what I'd hope it would be despite all of her Hollywood machines' help and her saying it 4 times.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/x_ml9Jab2gk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I expected to hear a song structure more along these lines with a catchy chorus beaten to death 6 times:

When these songs come on the radio it is kinda magical. I never want them to end. Even the 5+ minute ones feel too short. I just want them go on forever. Night Moves is like that. So is Carry On My Wayward Son. Maybe Turn The Page by Bob Sieger. The Tom Petty songs that I like are like that. I don't want them to ever end. I'm always surprised when they end.

My favorite from Wildflowers album was Time to move on.Mine as well. Obscure song, relatively, that I somehow always heard when grappling with large life decisions. Always got me off the pot when I already knew, but wasn't ready to act.

Of course my favorite isn't on the list

Yep. Rebels.

From wiki.....

The track was recorded in 1984. It was during the recording of this track that Petty broke his hand. Petty remembers being so high on drugs that he couldn't get an arrangement he liked. Petty went into the control room, and put the original demo tape on, which featured just him and a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar. He believed that they had yet to record an arrangement better than this demo, which made him so furious that he stormed up the stairs into his house, and punched the wall, causing severe damage to his left hand. After a while, Tom Petty called Jimmy Iovine in to help him finish "Rebels" along with some other tracks on Southern Accents. Alan "Bugs" Weidel, Tom's roadie, considers "Rebels" a least favorite of his due to Petty's broken hand.

As an aside, the poll is comprised of the top half of Rolling Stone Magazine's list of Petty's 50 greatest songs (plus a Wilbury song that I had to add unilaterally). Check out this list if you want to take a stroll down Petty Lane.

Damn the Torpedoes came out when I was a sophomore in high school. It was a massive hit and Petty was everywhere on the radio. I liked the songs well enough but never bought any of his albums. Over the years, I was familiar with his hits but still never bought any of his stuff.

Over the last couple of years, I have been accumulating a lot of 70s and 80s music and I now have all of his 70s and 80s albums, including the solo and Wilburys albums and really like all of them (except for the Wilburys songs that feature Bob Dylan).

After seeing this thread this morning, I have been listening to his latest albums on Spotify (Nobody's Children and Hypnotic Eye) and - wow! - they are really good. I've been missing out.

I have a huge file on my ipod..played it the whole time I was doing his painting.

...I teared up a little for the first time ever when the painting was completed. Kind of surprised me a bit.

Totally somber mood, realizing what a huge impact he had on my life. Very few artists have the capability to make you relate and think of you, instead of them.

That's a pure and true connection.

I was a DJ at Mizzou when the first TP album came out, and I was there through "Southern Accents." American Girl, Breakdown, the whole "Damn the Torpedos" album, all great stuff. And TP was just a real good guy. The anti-rock star. Southern Gentleman, family man, cool guy with a really great sense of humor. He'll be sorely missed.

I've got several. He did a slowed down acoustic version of Even the Losers that was out of this world. Breakdown, Honeybee, Jammin' Me, Don't Scare Easy, I Forgive it All, Wildflowers, and You Wreck me were all really good songs that don't get as much attention as some of his more well-known hits.

I chose Breakdown because it was on the list but I loved Refugee, You Got Lucky, and Crawling Back to you on Wildflowers.

I used to listen to the Wildflower CD all the time back in the late 90's when it came out, hadn't given it a listen in awhile so I popped it in. Forgot how great those arrangements were.

The Heartbreakers were a great band that accentuated Tom's songs perfectly.

Going to miss not hearing more great songs by one of the great songwriters of our time.

The honest truth is everyone likes Tom Petty.

Everyone thinks "great song but I don't want the album."

Then, as time goes by, you realize that you like about 32 songs by him.

Perhaps nothing changed your life but EVERYTHING HE DID was good.

Then you find that, then buy his albums, and...

Top 40 radio wore out some of Toms songs in the mid to late 70s. Tom could cross over am top 40, country and progressive rock fm stations. Those songs you thought you couldn't stand to hear again now you hear and a toe subconsciously starts tapping. Like so many others hard to pick one all are good. I remember when I first heard Honeybee I thought wtf but listened more and it grew on me.
