But what is the strategy? I assume (yeah, yeah) that all the marbles are set to a specific size and weight so once they start rolling it doesn't seem like there is much to do but watch. Maybe composition of the marble could impact how well it rolls through the sand?

It seems pretty random, but then again so is the NFL strategy of just throwing the ball up and seeing if the refs call a penalty. The marbles are less frustrating and I have a better chance of my marble winning since none of the competing marbles have big marketing deals with the league's advertisers.
