I like the Hormel canned Tamales (if you doctor them up!) I generally will add a little sour cream and some sharp cheddar (grated)

He's reviewing Nalley and Hormel brands, below, enjoy!!

I'm really starting to question your taste in food. I wouldn't feed that shit to my dog, let alone eat it myself

That's fine - I haven't had them in 12 yrs or so - but that's ok. Fair enough.

I'd like to try some from out west or in Texas - never have.

Tamales were my second favorite cheap eats while living in LA, right behind carne asada tacos... Mexicans damn sure know how to put something great together on the cheap

I was put off by authentic Mexican by the low quality steak they use - i was all excited about a place in Atlanta - hole in the wall place, then my second visit i found bones all throughout my taco - large bones - No idea WTF!

They seem to be made with shitty meat that I wouldn't use in a stew. The more authentic or home made they are, the shittier the meat. And the edible part of the wrap has an awful consistency. Bleh.

Gotta use cheap cuts to keep the price low, but wow I've never heard of bones in it, give a different spot another chance

I have no problem with that, but c'mon man. That barely qualifies as food

They are good for a quick eat out at the lake. I buy the other brands out of the deli case or the frozen in the cloth bag.

I'm pretty spoiled in that we have a tamale guy that sets up out of his Honda on the corner of my street (next to a train stop), Diego. He slangs tamales early mornings because the night, bar crowd, guys are made. He can't sell at night and has to use a different colored cooler or get fuck up. 6 tamales for $5. Gringo style or caliente; pork, chicken or queso.

That said, I wouldn't hesitate to try both of these in the OP if I was in a pinch and was craving tamales. Doctored up as has been suggested.

I loved (real) tamales when I was a kid, liked them when I was a teen, thought they were ok as a young adult, dont care for them now. Its really strange, its the only food I can think of that Ive liked less the older I got. Its usually the other way around.

I try to hit him a couple Friday’s a month. Couple tamales, sunny side egg on top. I’ve posted pics of them in the dinner thread even though it’s breakfast. Me, him, Hormel, just part of the food chain.

I've been there, been a few years. A gal from Mulvane used to drag me there, with a trailer.

I guess you are what you eat.

Canned tamales look like a combo of dog shit and baby butt spew. And I assume from reviews, the taste and texture are remarkably similar.

I love tamales, but I don't know that I'd ever want to try those. As much as I love them, I always wait until I can get some good ones.

I've wanted to make them, but every time I start thinking about it, I realize how much of a pain in the ass they look like, and I never do.

You should try them just as an adventure. They're actually kind of fun and something different to do in the kitchen.

There's the meat mix and the cornmeal, and then the wrapping in husks.... ugh.

I just made some for the first time about a month ago.

Not as hard as you would think and you can freeze the leftovers.
