View Full Version : Chiefs Reid being Quizzed about Alex

Q: Is he not seeing open receivers as much as in the past and is that because he’s hurried?

REID: “Like I said, I’m not going to tell you it’s one thing – it’s not one thing. Sometimes people see something and that might not be the primary receiver and so it might not even be in that part of the progression and read. There’s a lot of things that go into it. The thing I can do is stand before you and tell you that this isn’t an Alex Smith thing, it’s all of us. I know our players understand that and coaches. So we’re all going to do better and raise our game up.”

Q: How do they know this is not an Alex (Smith) thing – have you gone over that?

REID: “We all watch tape. Coaches coach, that’s what we do. And we’re around each other a lot so we all know all of our strengths, coaches and players, we all have strengths as human beings. We all know our strengths and our weaknesses. So I think we all understand that we can all do better. So that’s what we’re working on.”

Q: Do you think some of Alex (Smith’s) recent struggles are mental or how the team has played on the field?

REID: “I think it’s not just Alex. I think people do that, and I told you that I’ve got to get better at doing my part. Each position has got to do better. This is a team game and so everybody has a piece of the pie. You’re bringing it to Alex (Smith). I’m bringing it to all of us doing a better job. Alex is part of the team so he’s included in that. But it’s surely not just one person.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the offense's struggles are not "an Alex Smith thing."

"It’s all of us," Reid said. "I know our players understand that and coaches. So we’re all going to do better and raise our game up." The recent downturn has amplified calls for Smith to be benched in favor of first-round rookie Patrick Mahomes. Reid has consistently shot those down, however, and this comment is yet another vote of confidence for Smith. Still, if the offense continues to struggle, the coach may be forced to make a change.

That's why we gave up a shitload of draft capital to draft Patrick Mahomes, fellas.

Reid can deflect all day. All I ask of our media is that they force him to do it. I want one question after another trying to get down to why Alex sucks.

“Is his throwing arm injured?”
“Have you had his eyes examined recently?”
“Any thoughts on why Alex is playing worse with each passing week?”
“Would it even be possible for Mahomes to do worse than this?”

Draft picks are more for the future. Smith will be 34, far more expensive, and he's had multiple shoulder and concussion issues over a looooooong career.

Mahomes will have his time.. and soon. A little more pounding from Alex's peni to yo ass first though. :p

Forced by whom? Clark Hunt?

LMAO

No one in the organization has the power to make Reid do anything.

He's autonomous when it comes to the coaching staff and decisions.

I guess Veach could pull a Power Play and cut Alex Smith but that kind of a move wouldn't turn out well for anyone.

The players and fans are stuck with Smith until Andy decides he's seen enough, which will likely be after it's too late.

"Coach, this week you guys go up against a team that has allowed only 13 yds rushing all season; is trying to figure out how to run the ball something you guys have been working on in practice"?

or
"Coach, you guys have only been fielding 4 guys on the field on Defense these past few weeks due to everyone having sprained labia and missing time. Now that they're healed up and will be returning......how important / how big is it to get those guys back and be able to field 11 guys on defense"?

Chunt isn't going to make Reid do anything. He handed Reid the keys to the franchise by choosing him as the winner in his little power struggle with Dorsey this past offseason. Andy is King. If Veach ever dared cross him, who's going to win in that circumstance?

Reid is not accountable to anyone but Chunt, who seems to be deeply in love with him.

Not the fans, not the players, not the general manager. Only to the president of his fan club.

Reid won't make a QB change unless he decides to try to save a playoff appearance this year, or after we are mathematically eliminated.

Man, I sure hate the "It's not one person" argument. It's such a strawman. No sane person would think that success in a team sport is entirely dependent on one player. Nobody ever actually argues that. What they do argue is that the QB is the most important position in the sport, and so if the QB is failing, it has a much bigger effect on the team than failure at other positions.

FUCK you , ANDY!!!!!! ADDRESS THE FACT THAT ALEX SMITH IS FUCKING FAILING AND THAT HIS FAILURE IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE TEAM LOSING1!!!!!!

Reid trying to spread the blame, which is understandable. And there is some truth to that -- Smith isn't the only one struggling.

But the follow-up question should be something like: OK, it's not just an Alex problem. But how much of the problem is Alex? Or are you saying that all blame is shared equally?

As Mellinger wrote the other day, all players are a piece, but not all pieces are equal in size and importance.

Not that Reid would suddenly break and say, "Ah, ya got me. Alright, it's mostly on Alex, and everyone knows it, he's really stunk it up lately and he's on thin ice." But I would want to keep Reid squirming and have to come up with different answers.

I hope the refusal to bench Smith is Andy's misguided loyalty to Alex rather than they don't think they'd do any better with Mahomes.

I'm on the other end of things. Imagine how much of a fool he's going to look like if Pat comes in and we're able to run a real offence and put up points. Then people will be wondering "WTF did Andy stick with Alex so long"

if Andy keeps Alex in and he still stinks up the joint for the rest of the season and they move on to Pat this offseason, any success Pat has will be attributed to 'another offseason' to prepare him. So Andy won't have to face questions about why he didn't move on to Pat when Alex was sucking so bad.

The only way we're winning ANY of the games left on our schedule is if the defense and special teams can figure out how to put points on the board every game. Otherwise we're gonna keep losing like 13-10 and 27-17 type of games.

And that's assuming our defense doesn't gas out, allowing teams to put up 30+ on us.

That's another angle that needs to be explored.

With responsibility comes accountability. You can't keep accepting responsibility for failure without paying a price. Just saying "it's on me" over and over is meaningless if you aren't held accountable for that.

It's funny that the fans and press give the NFL coaches so much power. They are treated like genius men that must know more than everyone else. Fact is, these guys, most of them, are former players, at least at the college level, that got some lame degree while playing football. They aren't any smarter than anyone else. They just have 20 hours a day to watch football tape and make game plans and design plays off of what they see.

Point is, when trouble arises, we all expect them to have some magic answer. They don't. They aren't that smart. What is he gonna say? "Alex sucks. We gave up two very high draft picks to get him, but in the end, he's the same POS he's always been. I thought I was smarter than the last coach, but it turns out I'm not." No, he's not going to say that. He's going to speak coach speak and tell you nothing until they make a decision. THen he's going to say something like "we just felt the team needed a spark" or some BS.

If Andy and coaches watch tape and sees the struggles are someone else’s fault (like O-line), why not just call them out to the fans?

It would be much easier to find a new lineman and would get fans off his beloved QB

If not, then he should understand fans blame QB’s, and if it’s someone else’s fault, then a new QB would struggle as well.

And that his new QB’s start could get off on the wrong foot and lose fans early.

Of course no one believes this shit. Smith has the same struggles with a different team, different coaches, and different players all with the same result...he needed to be replaced before fans revolted. Much the way it ended with Cassel

I disagree. There are games that we lost over the last 6 weeks that arguably we would have won with Patrick as our QB. Not saying we don't have other issues. However, I think a change at QB would wake up the offense.

Few are guaranteeing Mahomes will save the day. The whole point is that Smith is who he is, he's not going to lead this team anywhere, and Mahomes was brought in to take over the team. The team is in a tailspin, with no signs of being able to escape. It's time to see the kid, get him some game experience, and start the process of figuring out what exactly we have in Mahomes. If you wait until he has the perfect situation to step into, he'll never play in KC.

The point of this thread isn't about what Andy says because he says what he's supposed to say and no coach is going to dump on one player.

The point is that people are making sure Andy knows we ALL see that Smith is the problem

Letting the mob demand that he throw his handpicked starter under the bus for everyones amusement, isnt something any good leader would do... he is only trying to maintain team dignity with all of the terse coachspeak

So, what you're saying is that we, as fans, should just shut up, root for the team unconditionally, and just trust anything and everything the coaching staff does? Clark Hunt loves you, and that's exactly the attitude that's made the Chiefs a loser franchise - no accountability, no demand for excellence, no premium placed on winning in the postseason.

IF KC makes the playoffs, and that's a huge if at this point, we aren't going to draw Brian ****ing Hoyer again. KC will get curb stomped by whoever they play. Then the Mahomes era can finally begin, and maybe decades of failure and retreads can be put behind us.

Few are guaranteeing Mahomes will save the day. The whole point is that Smith is who he is, he's not going to lead this team anywhere, and Mahomes was brought in to take over the team. RGIII was forced on the coaches I agree.

I heard an interview with Mara, he had no idea they were benching Eli before hand, it was not his call, that was Reese and Macadoo.

I have never heard anywhere where Manziel was forced on the field by ownership of the Browns.

Ill give you RGIII but thats not even remotely close to this situation.

I don' know why you would be 'content and satisfied' with sh** QB play. If you think we can't win the SB with him, that's fine. However you should at the very least want Smith to play well so we can get maximum trade value for him in the upcoming offseason.

My main concern is that we don't make the qb switch in 2018 and a smooth transition out. A draft pick is just icing on the cake. Maybe we lost a round in value if Alex continues to play like shit but it's going to be a third rounder or lower anyway... In the grand scheme of things, how much is that really. But it makes it that much easier for Reid and veach to make the decision and for Alex lovers to recognize that the move had to be made.

I like Alex, am appreciative that he brought us stability, and actually feel bad that he's going out like this. But his time is up and I care a lot more about that than I care about a draft pick.
