View Full Version : Chiefs Which four would make your Kansas City Chiefs Mt Rushmore?

ThaVirus

Just something that had me wondering. We're not the most storied franchise in existence but we've got some big names. Who would you pick to grace your Chiefs Rushmore?

Four picks, obviously. You can choose players solely or include coaches and front office as well if you like.

I'll include a poll of some of the top choices. Feel free to comment with your top four and vote for the top individual pick. That should give us a good idea as to which four would be most likely if it were an actual thing put to a vote.

The tough question is whether you include non-players.

My total four would be Lamar Hunt (the creator), Len Dawson (the leader), Derrick Thomas (the superlative), and Buck Buchanan (the producer).

If Hunt is out, I'd add Will Shields in his place (in the role of the team player).

However you like. Personally I'd include coaching/personnel guys but only because it feels right to me.

I know Trent doesn't deserve a spot but he's my all-time favorite Chief, sue me.

I didn't become a football fan until the early 90's and wasn't hardcore until the late 90's so any players before then don't really matter to me.

No. Not unless they were traded or cut (e.g., Otis Taylor to Oilers or Willie Lanier to the Colts). But even then, the competition is so high that any time with another team probably means that a candidate doesn't have enough tenure to be a contender.

It would appear its quite damaging so far. Not much Gonzo talk, yet he's probably the player with the highest ranking at his position (probably no. 1 or in the discussion). DT was amazing and maybe wouldve ended up in that kind of discussion but passed away instead of being traded away and DT is getting plenty of deserved picks

Who'd be your final three after DT?While I don't have a lot of personal knowledge about them, I think you have to give spots to the icons from those teams that went to the Super Bowl. So, Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier likely get a spot.

My final spot I would argue for Eric Berry. Sure, we don't know what's gonna happen with him in the future, but he embodies everything I want in a Chiefs player, and he has an inspirational story. He might be my favorite Chief of all times.

Will Shields is definitely in the mix.

Also, Derrick Johnson would be a personal pick of mine, but I realize he's gonna fall short in many people's eyes.

I'm with you here. Green is my favorite Chief of all time. Sans 2001, he was so efficient here. Wasn't afraid to make a risky throw or simply check down. Ran that offense to absolute perfection. Was a top 5 QB in the league for 4 straight years. Highly, highly underrated. I heard Smith's stats the other day and, over a 5 year span, he basically is (statistically) the best Chiefs QB ever. I think that if Trent Green were the QB of this team during that same period, we'd probably have at least one trip to the SB.

Regardless, I'll be objective and keep my answers to players:

Thomas, Gonzalez, Dawson, toss-up between Bell/Shields.

Why do you think I took a year long vacation from CP?

That damn near broke me. We had seats about 5 rows up at the 50. We were in a 'box seats' area so we had our own suite area we could go to that was similar to the club level at Arrowhead. We sat next to some cute Chiefs fans from California that just happened to be next to us. We had made plans to go to St. Elmos for steaks after the game and were just loving life.

Then...well you know. Fortunately I had my truck and there was a zero percent chance I was staying in Indy. I grew up in the midwest and have a big ol' pickup. It ain't ice - what the hell do I care? We went to Shula's for a steak and scotch (and more scotch). Stayed overnight and blasted through it the next morning. I didn't get stranded but I can't imagine I'll ever have a worse experience as a sports fan than sitting in the best seats I'll likely ever have and watching that meltdown in front of 65,000 Colts fans.

My buddy's dad who came with us hasn't watched a chiefs game since. I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment...

I would interpret this exercise as players only.

Need at least two from the Super Bowl team. That one is easy. Dawson and Bell.

After that, I'd only go with truly transcendent players of their time. The ones with longevity, busts in Canton, and guys who are top 5 mentions at their position from ANY football fan.

Tony Gonzalez is one of those players. After that, I don't know if Derrick Thomas quite has the all-time greatness cred. Is he Top 5 for LBs? Yes, he was so unique at what he did, but it would be tough to say.

If I'm feeling stingy, I'd go with Buck Buchanan over DT. If not, I'd put in DT over Buck.

Tough call.

That wasn't at home or in the divisional round, dipshit.

Who gives a shit, it was a playoff game that he played well in. I'm not an Alex fan but your biased hatred of anything he's actually done well makes you the dipshit, dipshit.

The point of that graphic was to make fun of our legacy of dipshit QBs blowing playoff games AT HOME and particularly in the DIVISIONAL round.

You couldn't pick up on that common thread?

I’m almost inclined to give Will Shields a spot. I know he was a guard and had a negligible effect on wins/losses while he was here but fucking shit his resume is impressive as shit.

Dude went to 12 Pro Bowls, 2 time first team All-Pro, won a Walter Payton Man of the year award, didn’t miss a single game in his entire career, played at a high level legitimately from start to finish, did a shit ton in the community, etc.

He really embodies those midwestern values and he was a damned good player.

Old school all the way here:

Sherrill Headrick
Len Dawson
Bobby Bell
Johnny Robinson

Willie Lanier needs in there too. I put Hedrick in there cause he was my favorite Chief way back when and the toughest SOB to put on a Chief's helmet (IMO).

I know, but he was only one of five and a guard. Is there a less impactful position on offense or defense that's less important than OG? Aside from fullback I just don't know.

Better overall. Sure.

More impactful in a game. Not even close.

I understand the point, but I'll also note that I've watched a few games this year where our interior OL got owned, and we tended to score very few points and lose.

Sure, he was massively disruptive in the passing game, but teams also ran right at him.

Houston has a solid all-around game, and I've seen him take over games with a pass rush as well.

Well, shit. I just re-read my post and idk what the **** happened lol glad you guys could understand what I was trying to say.

I feel like our interior OL gets pushed around nearly every game. We've had maybe one or two good interior linemen since Reid showed up and yet we still win a lot of games.

Cherry is an interesting pick. Why him?

One of the best safeties I've ever seen. Outstanding tackler, outstanding player on the football. Had 7+ Ints 5 times and over 100 tackles 6 times. 927 career tackles (6.25/game). He was like having Eric Berry and Marcus Peters in one body.

and Gonzo.

If we had Gonzo paired with Kelce.

Glad to see someone is getting proper recognition:

Can’t put Derrick in there. He dint wear a seatbelt and had more kids than an orphanage.

Need more quality personnel

I think he has to be in. You can't tell the story of this franchise without him. I know the death led to the mystique but looking at a Chiefs Mt. Rushmore without him would feel incomplete.

Stram
Dawson
Shields
Thomas

I need to amend this...

Remove Stram and replace him with Lamar, cant be leaving out the AFL creator, and franchise founding father

Still stand by my Shields pick, best guard to ever play in my estimation
