I think he's a free agent as well as the highest paid punter in the NfL.

I say bring on the Michael Dickson show.

Dickson will likely require a higher pick than we will want to spend, and Veach/Toub already showed they can make someone work without having to burn tons of money or a high draft pick.

Colquitt still has years left in the NFL, but his time in KC is over.

It's going to take more than one year of drafts to get our defense up to speed. They are going to need every advantage and the best punter in the NFL should be one of those advantages. Keep him.

It doesn't have to.

Berry was out this year. Hali is old, mostly banged up, and when in barely effective. DJ hasn't recovered the speed to cover and he's lost that explosive burst he once had to make plays.

Our D line and secondary (minus Berry) are all very young. Houston has flashed late this year and should be solid for 2 or 3 more years.

We're looking at (possibly) FS, OLB, and MLB. And if we land a legit SS I think Parker is passable at FS.

We need three players and we should be able to sign one in FA if we're smart about it...

I don't think so, I think he finishes his career as a Chief. I'm not sure almost $9M for a punter is going to fly anywhere in the NFL. Sign him for 3 years, $15M and be done with it.

Michael Dickson is better at punting than any other football player on the planet is at anything

10:27 PM - Dec 27, 2017

I love Colquitt but he's gonna have to be replaced at some point. He's been good. But with Dickson there's an opportunity to upgrade the position believe it or not. At the same time we get younger and save Cap space. If we can get some extra picks in the draft I
d throw a 3rd at him. He'd be the best player for our defense.

https://kckingdom.com/2017/12/30/kansas-city-chiefs-dustin-colquitt-likely-gone-2018/

Just this week, Kansas City invited in a pair of punters for a tryout. Austin Rehkow and Taylor Symmank were two of 13 players the Chiefs had in. This time of year, big tryouts like this indicate the team is looking at “futures” contracts.

What is also interesting about these tryouts for the Kansas City Chiefs is that there is a lot of buzz around a punter in this year’s NFL Draft. Michael Dickson of the Texas Longhorns is being billed as a top tier punter. The junior punter had already declared for the NFL Draft when he put on a show in the Texas Bowl this week.

There are other quality punters being mentioned as well in this year’s draft. The Chiefs are obviously considering getting younger (and cheaper) at the position. Both Austin Rehkow and Taylor Symmank are younger players. It would not be the least bit surprising if Kansas City made a move like this.

While many Kansas City fans will reference the past 13 years of what Dustin Colquitt has done, it’s the job of Brett Veach to think about the next 13 years. For my money, Michael Dickson is a great option for that and will come at a cheap price for the next four years. That’s just too good a value to be passing on.

Yeah. It’s season time for e changing of the guard. We need youth at to many positions and so many past their prime vets need to be released.

It’s time to change the identity of this team from guys like DJ, Hali, Colquit, etc and start building for the future.

Where are you getting this $9M number from?
Most people already complain about his $3.75 M avg, $4M this year, is too much for a punter. He is the highest paid punter in the league currently.
What makes anyone think that $5M a year average is going to be acceptable to the team which is $1.5M higher than the 2cd highest paid punter in the league?

We drafted Colquitt in the 3rd. If Dickson is all what people say he is, we are not going to get him in the 6th round. I’m fine with over drafting a guy like this but I’m sure people here will freak. Having two young talented and cheap kickers would be nice.

And for the record, Dustin was a damn good 3rd rounder for us.

Don't we only have 4 or 5 picks in this draft? I would like to have the guy on our team, but I don't see how we use a 3rd round pick on a punter this year. Last year we had the draft firepower to do something like that. This year, no. If Colquit is gone, then a free agent or an udfa kicker is going to be our punter.

Ooops, misread the chart. It's $4.9M, which probably isn't going to fly anywhere else in the NFL, either. But back to subject -- $3.5M per year for 3 years. Seems like a pretty square deal for perhaps the best overall punter in the NFL. You can't look at just net, you have to look at how many times he drops it inside the 20. You can point out that's fallen off this year, but when you have to punt from your own 10 (or worse) ----.

We need help at OLB, pass rusher and CB. It is possible to get those in the 2cd and 3rd rounds but those are premium positions, so when drafting those in the middle rounds it is a crap shoot at best.
I would take quality over quantity. So if it is possible I would rather trade up and get better players with those extra picks.
Who do we have that we need to use the Franchise tag on this year? Seems odd but if it buys us an extra year why not use it on Colquitt if we don't have anyone else that is a bigger priority?

http://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2017/08/30/chiefs-updated-draft-picks-for-2018-and-2019/

KC could get a 2018 seventh-round pick back due to the Marcus Cooper trade. The conditional pick won’t be confirmed until we get closer to the draft.

This is what I can find. It is the reason I said "as of now".

We would get a lot more than a 7th for Smith.

If we tagged Colquitt wouldn't that decrease his salary fron the highest paid to the avg of the 5 highest ? If it does it would make sense to do that.

Still want the rookie though.

Lol. Yeah. Because a quarterback that just threw for 400 yards, 26 TD's and a 67.5% completion percentage in 15 games is only worth a 7th round pick.

You are correct that he has been a huge factor in allowing our feeble defense to survive and our defense isn't going to improve with any real significance in the next year or even 2 for that matter. But he only stays IF he takes a pay cut and I doubt that happens. It might though IF he senses future SBs with Mahomes.:D

One would think that if we can resign Colquitt for $3-4m per for one of the top punters in the league, just be done with it. Little concern around his physical skill deteriorating so a longer term deal would be acceptable.
We need every pick and then some to find 2-3 new defensive starters. Assuming we maintain 3-4 defense, have to get a NT (or resign Logan at a lower salary), need a OLB and CB.

So lets sort this out, he pinned Mizz at the:

2 yard line
3 yard line twice
4 yard line
7 yard line
9 yard line
10 yard line twice
12 yard line
14 yard line
1 shank to the 50

Total return yards =0

That's worthy of a 2nd round pick right there folks

I've not seen the TX kid in action but sounds like he is as good as advertised, but that's besides the point.
The goal is to acquire quality players at as many positions as possible. If the Chiefs use a 2nd on a punter as mentioned, then that severely limits picks needed for the other quality starters needed. I would hate to rely on Dee Ford and Revis to take us thru a full year.
