View Full Version : Chiefs Yet another Chiefs choke job

You knew as soon as Mariota got the lucky bounce this game was in trouble. The play calling in the 2nd half was terrible. Guys dropping balls. And the Bob Sutton defense showed up or rather didn't show up.

Andy and Sutton thought an 18 pt lead was safe. Couple that with a missed FG, an absolute bullshit non-fumble call that led to a FG, 0 points off of 2 turnovers and well....the Chiefs blow an 18 pt lead at home to lose yet another 1st round playoff game at home.

Mahomes ain't fixing this as long as Andy is too scared to stay on the attack. If Bob Sutton isn't immediately fired then you can also say Mohomes isn't fixing anything.

Clark needs to force Andy to change up his coaching staff. Nagy should be the full time playcaller on offense. Sutton should be put out to pasture. Andy Heck should be fired as offensive line coach.

The tackle/fumble ruled "forward progress"

Mariota's extraordinary throw and catch-TD.

The holding call to kill our first drive of the 3rd.

Orson Charles' 3rd down drop to kill the second drive of the 3rd.

Butker's missed FG.

The personal foul that offset the running into the punter penalty.

Jones going down.

Kelce going down.

4 dropped passes.

Premature snap with Smith (overthrowing?) missing Albert (alligator armed?)

Failing to stop them on 3rd and 10.

Franchise is cursed. Cursed.

A terrible call you left out was the roughing of the kicker call that would have given the Chiefs a 1st down. Instead there was a phantom personal foul called, no flag thrown, to offset the penalty and make KC re-kick.

Really???

I think #40 did commit a foul on that play and I think I saw it in real time, he appeared to shove a Titan down from behind after the play was over.

He did... #45 (KC) retaliated and they flagged him for it. A TEN player shoved one of the Chiefs players and #45 shoved him in the back. Second guy always gets the foul.

Every other missed call, blown call, or missed opportunity would not have mattered had the Chiefs remained on attack on offense rather than going to conservative mode as soon as they got that 18 point lead.

Smith showed this year that he can make plays within the offense when the Chiefs are attacking and stretching the field.

When they went conservative, those plays are not there.

This loss falls squarely on the shoulders of Reid and Nagy.

I'm not sure "fix" is the right, but if Mahomes keeps the gunslinger mentality, he could fix this.

When plays aren't there within the offense, or they break down, the gunslinger will make plays outside the play called.

That's what Reid, and the Chiefs, need.

If only "going conservative" actually meant trying to run the football.

Also, for all of Nagy's interviews, that 2nd half ain't gonna be a solid closing argument for him.

Kelce going down really hurt. The play that KILLED the Chiefs was the 3rd and 5 dropped pass by # 82. would have been an easy 1st down. :shake:

I could not possibly agree more with this. This team wasn't bad. When Alex was in attack mode, we moved the sticks and could hang with anyone. We have playmakers to compete. It's when we have some lead and decide to play defensive that this team always reverts back to abortion mode.

I think Mahomes can fix that. Get rid of Smith, get a couple picks, save 17mm to spend on complementary help. And we'll be back here again next year.

Mohomes won't change it if Reid doesn't quit the conservative shit every time we get a lead. The play calling in the 2nd half was fucking abysmal, scared shit. When we go vertical we do good and we score. When we go sideways consistently, we don't do good and we don't score.

It's really that simple.

You gotta wonder if it's the play calling. It seems like it, but then you look at last week's game where the same guys are calling plays. I dunno.

Look at the pattern, especially this year. Whenever we get a lead or whenever we get pinned inside of our own 20, etc., the play calling starts going very conservative.

After the Titans scored in the 2nd half, you could tell we went into a shell for probably 2 reasons..

A) Reid wanted to eat clock and not turn it over
B) No Kelce so no down field

The problem was that Hunt was completely taken out of the game by the coaches. We did the Titans a favor by going one dimensional when we still had an 11 pt lead.

I have to think when Kelce went down Reid took over the play calling. It sure looked like we reverted back to the Steelers game plays and not the last couple of weeks.

Absolutely agree. Reid plays to lose. Has never learned his lesson.

Conservative Play Calling
Smith:
2016 when ahead by 9+ points: 65 QB rating
2015 when ahead by 9+ points: 73 QB rating

Aggressive play calling:
Smith with 4+ receivers
2014: 63/95, 66% complet, 7.08 avg, 10 td’s, 1 INT…117.6 rating
2015: 73/110, 66% completion, 7.00 avg, 6TD/1 INT, 100.9 rating
2016: 146/193, 75% completion, 7 avg, 8TD/3INT, 101.8 rating

Reid can put together a great game plan, but if the other team figures out how to counter it, he is not able to adjust. He just hopes that we will get enough breaks to survive. He and Sutton are exactly the same in this regard, and both need to go. We only needed 1 TD in the 2nd half and it was inexcusable to not get that, even accounting for Kelce and the awful officiating. Allowing Tenn to get a TD on three straight drives in 2nd half also inexcusable.
