That was not easy to watch, but I think the organization and the fans needed a game like this to finally cut the cord on Alex Smith. Whether they had won this game or not, they were never going to win the Super Bowl with Alex at quarterback. Not this year. Not ever. Had they won this game, the hype would have built up again, Alex might have had a good game against the weak Patriots' defense, and there would have been some urge to keep him. Now there won't be.

And sure, you could also argue that Alex was not the problem today or even the real problem with this team and you'd be right to an extent. But if you want this team to ever take the next step and be on the level of teams like the Patriots and Steelers, Mahomes needs to be given a shot right now and he needs to develop into a top QB (which he very clearly has the potential to do). That's the only way the Chiefs are going to be on the level of the Patriots/Steelers and the only way they'll ever get the kind of respect they need in a sport that is so dependent on refereeing for success. The league and its refs cater to elite/star QBs especially in the playoffs and no matter how good Alex was he was never going to be that.

It's time to move on.

202 yards rushing given up today. Does that bring back flashbacks of the Steelers game?

The effort was worse in this game. The Chiefs had the box stacked on 3rd and 9 or 10 or whatever it was. The RB gets the handoff, like you want him to in that situation, and our OLB gets delayed blocked by a QB and Henry turns the corner and gets the 1st down. Nothing tricky about it. Game Over. Marcus Mariota is a GARBAGE QB, in fact he isn't even a real QB... he is a hybrid receiver/TE who can also throw it a little bit

Chiefs offense had the ball on the TN 28.....got -2 yards and a missed field goal.

Alex had 2 1/2 minutes on the clock and was 10 yards from FG range....and can't get it done.

Yes, the defense sucked. Yes, Sutton needs to be fired.

But Alex Smith had opportunities to put a foot on the throat of TN and win this game and he failed to get it done.

Idk man, there are a lot of fans out here on social media tn that just don't get it. Coming up with every other reason under the sun why we lost this game, some of which do have merit, but in the end, Alex just can't get it done. Its been 5 years now and we have gotten no further with him than we ever have with anybody else. Its time to move on to the future with a guy that we drafted, who just happens to be a freak physical specimen who makes 50 yd throws accurately off his back foot with a flick of his wrist. The other stuff can be taught. That cannot.

My attitude about the game changed when Kelce got knocked out. I had a feeling Smith would revert to old Alex without his safety blanket, and they'd find some epic way to blow a 21 point lead and sure enough they delivered.

I went out to the garage to watch the 4th quarter and my kids come screaming in with excitement when DJ ran the 2pt back and I didn't even crack a smile. Told them to just wait, there'll be a whistle that stopped the play, a flag or it really wasn't a fumble. At that moment they understood what it's really like to be a chiefs fan.

Excited that the Mahomes era starts now. If by some BS scenario they bring Alex back I may just check out for the year.

Agreed. It was easier to take this time. I told my wife after the Mariota pass to himself we would collapse. Just like Luck recovering his own fumble to score. I even called the tease play that would make me think we had it. That ended up being the fumble recovery. Last year it was the holding on the 2 point. Hopefully Mahomes brings new swag and karma because the safe route is old and tired. Been watching the same shit for too long now.

alice is a crap QB but Reid is the real problem. Nice misuse of Hunt in the 2nd half with a 18 point lead. The Depth on D is empty and 3 picks in the draft aren't going to fix it.

Mahhomes might take a few more deep shots and be more accurate downfield than alice but it is still Andy's dink and dunk LOS basketball type O.

The D is going to be an even bigger issue next year.

Exactly. It was a blessing in disguise we lost tonight instead of going into Foxboro and giving the Pats/BB the satisfaction of shoving our shit further up our colon.

Yeah, I'm so grateful Alex Smith played the docile QB and decided to lay down in the second half rather than attack downfield. I would've been so fearful had we met the evil Patriots in the next round. Too scary. Yay for Alex.

alice is a crap QB but Reid is the real problem.

Young quarterbacks usually run a lot more conservative plays. Mahomes will grow into a better QB than Smith. He has the tools, both physical and mental that Smith never had.

I've treated low IQ/functioning patients on the medical wards and you guys are definitely on that level

What in the hell are you defending right now?

The looney tunes you keep an eye on for a living have a better chance of winning it all than the Chiefs

Its OVER, the Smith dream is OVER... was it all his fault, I doubt it... but the fact remains its over, pour your hopes and dreams into Cleveland, or Arizona, or Jacksonville or whoever it ends up being at this point

I was at the game sitting behind the end zone.

Alex missed a lot of reads that second half.

I don't recall Brady or Ben ever carrying any squad that had a bottom ten defense. Is that what you are suggesting?

202 yards rushing given up today. Does that bring back flashbacks of the Steelers game?

Please tell me you'll leave once Alex is gone. Or are you gonna stick around a pick on Mahomes for every little mistake he makes. Mahomes throws for 4000 yards 35 tds and 10 interceptions in his first year starting.

You: he threw twice as many interceptions as Alex did last year. Youll never win with that kind of incompetent play from the qb.

It would be verrrry Chiefs to lose this game and still keep Alex for maximum fan sadness, so i'm not ruling it out myself.

It's sad to think that Andy was so determined to give Alex a chance that he refused to acknowledge what we all saw/knew, and he knew too. But Andy's the kind of guy who doesn't care about such things, he always has to be the guy who did it differently.

Then again, he works for Clark, there won't be any consequence. Because Clark's the same way, he thrives on, banks on, doing something everybody else thinks/knows is stupid in hopes of looking smart the one time it works.

This is actually a noteworthy point, both Andy and Clark enjoy doing the nutty thing for the shock value of it, then claiming we don't know what we're talking about.

Smith was gone save winning the Super Bowl. It didn't matter. In fact, a win today might have gotten us a better draft pick for him when we trade him.

This was absolutely NOT all on Alex Smith

The Tennessee offense continually imposed its will on the defense in the second half, just ground their asses down like a bunch of hapless coffee beans

That said, its time for the change... does ANYONE have a better answer for how to fix this disgraceful malaise? Big sacks from Houston, Jones, and DJ stalled them for a minute... but they just kept chugging at us

Marcus Mariota is a GARBAGE QB, in fact he isn't even a real QB... he is a hybrid receiver/TE who can also throw it a little bit

They're like having Kelce as a full time QB, and we choked on his sorry ass

DJs bloody murder of a sack wasn't a fumble? Go **** yourself Goodell, so glad you could send the patsy Titans in to face Pittsburgh for their inevitable slaughter... I hope you die in your sleep tonight, Roger

Gritting my teeth, and trying to set all of that aside though... we need Mahomes now more than ever

If the NFL only cares about sexy QB play, then its time to plug in the sexiest young mfer since Brett Favre

I think Mahomes scores SOMETHING in the second half.
What an idiotic thread

Mahomes was starting next year no matter what happened

Starting Smith with his salary would be a very Chiefs thing to do.

Are you suggesting that Tennessee is a top team, and Mariota is a star? ROFL
No, that's not what I'm suggesting at all and I have no idea how anybody would take anything that I've posted that way. The next call that goes against the Patriots like that one will be the first, though.

Too disgusted, and drunk, to argue anything right now... but whatever it is that Smith brings to the table wasn't enough

Wasn't all his fault, yet he also didn't do anything remarkable in the second half... was it terrible playcalling, and dogshit defense? Right or wrong no one cares right now

We HAVE to start all over with Mahomes now... any and all rumors of keeping Alex around need to be bombed to smithereens

Yeah Mahomes is going to fix dropped passs and the worse defense (or close to) in the NFL.
Nobody is saying the Chiefs as currently assembled are in good position to win a SB (with or without Smith), so I don't get this post either.

You had that much trust in Reid getting ready of his favorite after a division title and playoff win? Those are the kinds of seasons that keep coaches employed for a long, long time in this league.

I'm not still entirely convinced he'll do it now, but this will make it really hard for him not to.

The new kid is doomed if he has to play with these asshats. You dont play the most important half of your life and score zero and give up 22 points. Time to dump the who load and start new.

Bravo.

It was needed. The worst thing that could have happened is if Alex Smith tore it up, made it to the AFC championship game and lost in a heroic effort. That might have forced this team to keep him. The Chiefs, or any team for that matter, will never reach sustained deep playoff success without an elite QB and no matter how you slice it, Smith is not even close to an elite QB. Mahomes has that chance and he needs to start in 18.

Well we're at 48 years, so it looks highly likely that we'll go half a century without playing in a Superbowl. So unless PMII doesn't suffer some sort of 1st-year-starting blues, the Hunt family's team with be looking at reaching the 50-year mark.

Right. And I don't even anticipate the Chiefs will be better immediately with Mahomes over Smith. It is very possible they take a step back in 2018 with him and don't win the division or make the playoffs. That shouldn't have any bearing on this decision over the next few months, though.
