View Full Version : Chiefs Derrick Johnson Defensive Coordinator??

carcosa

Just came up with this idea that could possibly change the face of the Kansas City Chiefs defense: Derrick Johnson for Defensive Coordinator!!

Here's why:

He played middle linebacker (MLB), which is like the quarterback (QB) of defense, and QBs (quarterbacks) often become offensive coordinators (OCs)
Bob Sutton is very old. Derrick Johnson is very old for a football player, but very young for a coach!
He would have good ideas for the defense
He is an experienced Chiefs player with over 7 years of experience playing for the Chiefs, so he knows the stadium and people who work there
Andy Reid has already said he'd like DJ (Derrick Johnson) to coach for KC (Kansas City)!
I think it would be nice!

And what do you think?? Thanks!!

Just to clarify, is this the Derrick Johnson who played for the Chiefs?

DC his first job? That’s a lot to take on. But, from past interviews and watching him play, l think he’s going to a good coach.

DC? Nah. I'd take him as a LB coach in an instant, but he needs to learn a few things before you hand him the reins like that.

Without any experience, you expect him to not only coach, not only call plays, but to run a defensive unit? Nope. I would love for him to be an assistant to a positions coach for us, though, and work his way up to a positions coach.

He has to start at a positions or assistant level first for a few years.

Definitely could be part of a coaching staff. Here or somewhere else. Head coordinator is something that would be a bit further down the road for him though.

Here's the only type of player who makes a good coach: a moderately successful one at best.

Coaching is 18 hour days. Derrick Johnson is about to live on a yacht for 5 years.

DJ can start as an intern with the task of applying a cattle prodder to Senile Sutton on the sideline every time Sutton drops Justin Houston into coverage.

Of course Reid thinks he'd be a great coach and has said as much.

Still, coaches have to earn their stripes too, and I have no idea if he has any interest in being a coach.

Bob Sutton is very old.

Why do people say this? He's 67, that is not "very" old. Dick LeBeau is 80 and put together a really good defense last year. Lots of coaches coach into their 70s.

You agists can GFY.

Say he's a bad coach all you want, but to say he is "very old" is BS.

My first thought to this question was "Why not, it can't get much worse". But after another cup of coffee, I agree with you. It's not like Mark DeLeone was effective last year and Mike Smith can suck an egg. Sutton needs to go, but not with DJ as his successor this year.

I'm all for bringing him in as a position coach, or quality assistant or something to learn from if he wanted, but you've been eating Tide Pods if you think a player is ready to just walk into a D Coordinator level at the NFL level and be ready for the job.

I love DJ and he's a smart guy. If he wants to be a football coach, he can intern and then move into a position job. Former players can be great coaches but the thought of him ascending to a DC job anytime in the next couple years is pretty ridiculous.

Can he get some seasons to get seasoned as a coach? He should get internship to learn all he can how to be an effective teacher and coach. He needs a feel for coaching as an assistant to an assistant and then move up the ranks as he proves viable. Just my $.02.
