In 1963 when the team moved here from Dallas, Lamar wanted to keep the name "Texans" but Jack Steadman talked him out of that ridiculous idea. The Star held a contest to name the team. First place: Mules.

What was the runner up suggestion?

I did an elimination thing since I can't remember. The Jayhawks, Penises, and Sporting had to be thrown out right away. I believe the name Royals was given to the baseball team because Mr. Kauffman's company used a crown or something similar for a company logo. Therefore, my answer is Rattlesnakes. Damn, that would have been awful. The winner, Chiefs, was an homage to former mayor H. Roe Bartle, who's nickname was "Chief" for all you youngsters. You're welcome. :)

We could've ended up like ST Louis used to be: both NFL and MLB team names the same. Maybe the colors would've been the same too, like Pittsburgh did with their 3 pro teams.

In my not so humble opinion, anytime a franchise changes anything (see following examples) a portion of the fan base will be pissed off. Examples of possible changes:

1) Team's nickname
2) Team's colors
3) Team's logo
4) Team's owner
5) Team's location or, moving the franchise

As to the percentages on the above list, I'll leave it up to you. Some will be far higher than others and some may be even unanimous.
