View Full Version : Movies and TV 2018 Paid Media Consumption

Purely out of curiosity, I was wondering what kinds of media people are using these days. I read a stat the other day that over half of U.S. households are paying for at least some form of streaming media these days, so it'll be interesting to see how CP compares.

Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix.

I also think my wife has Spotify Premium but that may be an introductory offer only.

I'll definitely sign up for Disney's new streaming service in 2019 and I have all of my recent movie purchases linked to Movies Anywhere, although the overwhelming majority have been purchased through VUDU (which is now no longer necessary).

We still have DirecTV for our TV service but we're looking to transition to a streaming service. We do have Amazon Prime and Netflix though. Like Dane....we also have Movies Anywhere which is a godsend with the FireTV and the kids.

For music we use Pandora and Apple Music. We have SiriusXM in the car but that shit is getting ridiculously overpriced now at $400 a year.

I'm a cord cutter, so I have quite a few. Currently, my arsenal consists of:

Netflix
Amazon Prime (don't use it much though)
Hulu
SlingTV
Spotify

On top of that, I also use the following:
YouTube (I probably watch as much random YouTube shit as anything these days)
Pandora free for random background radio
MLB.tv or NHL.tv if the Avs or Rockies are worth watching
Vudu for purchasing movies (and using cheap Ultraviolet codes)
Plex for a few things that can't easily be...procured...otherwise

Yeah, that's a good one. I stuck to paid sources for the poll just because there are a bazillion free sources of good content out there, but I loosely try and keep up with probably a dozen podcasts.

Oh yeah, I have MLB.TV again this year, too. I'll occasionally use Spotify to listen to new releases but I'll purchase immediately if I like it.

Right now, I've got a crazy deal with Direct TV in which I have every single service and one DVR for $55 a month for the calendar year but I hate their satellite service these days, as the box is slow, pixelates and freezes from time to time.

Once NFL Sunday Ticket is available for Direct TV NOW, I'll make the switch.

The main reason why I have Direct TV is because of Sunday Ticket.

Otherwise, I'd have TV bundled with my Spectrum Internet and VOIP or Direct TV NOW.

With a 450mbps connection, I prefer streaming to satellite and watch as many programs as possible from the streaming apps.

Live sports suck on Direct TV satellite, even with zero clouds and wind. My signal jammed and pixelated all weekend when watching the NCAA Tournament.

She got into Fuller House on Netflix and Hulu is the only place to watch every episode of Full House on an iPad or streaming app.

Are you sure your dish is accurately pointed? The only time I ever lost signal when I had DTV is when snow accumulated on the dish, and I'm guessing that's not going to be an issue with you.

I've had DTV out several times in the past 15 years and each and every time, they tell me that the previous installer "incorrectly mounted the dish". It's probably a touch off due to heavy wind and rain this year but it's an absolutely pain in the ass to get to these days.

I should probably call them but I also cancelled the monthly insurance because I only have a single DVR now and satellite, so I don't know if there will be a cost involved.

To be honest, I'm really sick of DTV and the constant customer service calls I need to make each year in order to lower the bill and such. Even though I deactivated 4 receivers back in 2015, they failed to deactivate one of them and charged me for 14 months before I caught their error.

They're really a bunch of no-talent assclowns.

I'm a true cord-cutter. I only have an OTA antenna with a Tablo so I can record any program of interest. I can't even keep up with all that recorded content.

My Rokus are nice because it offers a bunch of free movies and other options.

Content is a real problem for me and why I truly cut the cord. ESPN is horrible and why has the Travel Channel turned into Andrew Zimmern 24/7?

I must admit I signed up for Sling TV Orange (Dish Network) this month for March Madness. It was $20 and is already cancelled, so it will be disconnected in a couple of weeks.

I installed my dish myself and it can be a bit time consuming to fine tune it so it wouldn't surprise me that most techs don't want to fool with it. And their superiors are probably pushing them on how much time the spend at each call. Sucks that you can't get to it yourself because it's not difficult, also helps to have a second person to watch the meter on the TV screen.

Pretty interesting results. Around a third of us are cord cutters (no cable or satellite TV). Four in five have Netflix, which doesn't really surprise me. I'm a bit surprised by Amazon Prime, though. I have Prime, but I rarely actually watch any video on it. Hulu's abut where I would have expected. They just don't seem to be able to get the value proposition right.

Pretty surprised by Amazon Music being so high. That has to be Alexa-driven, right?

This will be my first year without Sunday Ticket in over 10 years.I've held on to Directv the lastb4 or 5 years solely because of the Sunday Ticket. I have to be able to watch the Chiefs. This season, though, I noticed that every Sunday when I switched over to Directv for the game, the tv was still tuned in to the channel I had watched football on the previous week. So, I wasn't using it at all during the week. Since I had no problem streaming some of the games at work this year, I decided to cut the cord. I asked the rest of the family if they could live without it, and they had no problem with me getting rid of it.

Our contract ends in June, and the guy knocked our monthly hit down to $70 just to keep us until then, because I was ready to pay the cancellation fee to get rid of it in January.

So, this will be my first NFL season with no Sunday Ticket.

I've watched maybe four things on there in the last year, but I voted for it in the poll. I wouldn't sign up for the streaming service on its own, and I would assume many people that voted for it in the poll are in that same boat.

Just trying to guess why the numbers might be surprisingly high.

No cable - no SAT. We have Netflix, Amazon Prime (Members) Hulu (Daughters account) and Sling(Son's account) Additionally, back in 2004? Hell, never listen to ANY local radio and haven't since then.

I thought it might be a pain getting used to streaming after DirecT, but don't miss it at all. Additionally, we bought a little Window HD antennae that we use for local stations. Works like a charm!

I have one of those lifetime sirius subs too, but i never use it anymore. I gave my car to my sister and they made a new rule that you couldn't transfer it anymore so she has it in her car and I just use it (on very rare occasions) via the mobile app.

I cord cut a while ago. I have netflix, amazon (with hbo,) hulu, and I use vimeo alot. I love short films and I spend alot of time watching cool stuff on vimeo.

i also have a slingbox in my condo in KC, so I watch local broadcasts of Chiefs games. No more sunday ticket prices or directv headaches for as long as that little box keeps working. Since the company quit making new hardware, I am a bit unsure how long the service will continue to work, but for now it is brilliant.

I usually don’t go right away to rewatch so it might be nearly instant. I just remember one time that I tried to watch the condensed version and got a message that it would be up shortly. I think they clarify the time it takes in the TOS agreement. The full game broadcast version is available immediately though. Only condensed and all-22 are delayed, I believe.

When I'm in a hotel, I find myself not even turning the TV on and instead just watching stuff on my laptop.

DirecTV was my last provider. I was offered $35/month (when I called to cancel) for the same deal I had been paying $90. I think it was 200 channels, but only 15 or 20 mattered to me.

As I said before, content is a real problem. I don't think it will ever be solved. There are too many channels and not enough good writers to fill the huge void. It just becomes crap.

When there are major cable stations that show reruns over and over and over, something is wrong. I watched every episode of Seinfeld three or four times until it became tedious. I think Jerry put it very well when he said, "When you read Moby Dick the second time the whale becomes a friend." We're not reading Moby Dick twice... we're reading it over and over and over.
