Chiefs coach Andy Reid has promoted special teams coach Dave Toub to assistant head coach, the club announced Friday.

Toub, 55, will retain his special teams duties.

“Dave has had the opportunity to work with our team on both sides of the football, on the field, and in the classroom,” Reid said in a statement. “His leadership qualities have entrusted me to promote him to assistant head coach.”

Toub has been on the Chiefs' staff since Andy Reid arrived before the 2013 season. Since then, he has burnished his reputation as one of the finest special teams coaches in the game.

Does this hint that Reid will give him play calling?

Does this mean anything more than a new title for Toub?

Not really, but if Andy Reid died soon then I'd trust Toub to take over.

I'm not sure if it's still a rule, but technically another team couldn't hire him away as an assistant head coach now. Not that it'll matter, any looks he get would probably be as a head coach.

Nobody will ever hire him as a head coach.

Given the trend these days is finally leaning towards younger coaches, you could be right.

I will say, if by some stroke of fate this team could actually win a Super Bowl with Mahomes, or at least be a major contender, then his odds will probably go up. Just because teams will pick off quality head coach candidates from a winner.

Wasn't Nagy our old AC? Plus another team.can only hire him as a HC now.

If Hue Jackson bombs a 3rd time does Dorsey bring him in to coach the Browns?

It's so another team couldn't do the same thing to him and steal him away. Smart move to keep him since Coordinators can only jump if they're out of contract or are given permission and it's a bump in title.

“His leadership qualities have entrusted me to promote him to assistant head coach.”

Curious about the provenance of this quote.

Is it accurate? If so, was it something Reid spoke, or wrote?

Because, not to be a Nazi, but that's pretty atrocious grammar for an official franchise statement.

Does this mean anything more than a new title for Toub?It blocks another team from hiring him away for a similar title. They would have to give him a promotion.

He’s trying to get him a head coaching job.

Possibly grooming for next HC of Kansas City Chiefs but he would be hard to keep away from other teams.

He retire then went with the Bears to be a offensive analyst.

He wears motorcycle pants and tank tops showing off his hairy shoulders and cruises gay bars looking for twinks?

He has worked both sides of football... I wondered how he & Peters "supposed" to get in to it.

Every team in the NFL is after him every year, but every year he is back with the Chiefs, demanding that our kick returners bring it out to the 12.

Andy Reid coaching tree.

That means he can be a head coach and win a Vince Lombardi trophy elsewhere and Andy never does.

I remember when Toub and Sutton could perform their jobs. That was an impressive two seasons.

This really is the worst part of the offseason, free agency has come and gone and now all we can do is wait for the draft... talk about being in the doldrums :shake:

I looked at the Chiefs website and he doesn't have "Special Teams" anywhere in his new title. Maybe he is getting a bump and Rod Wilson will take over ST.

It says right in the OP he's keeping his ST duties.
