Is Berry participating?

Well, I don't want him to participate if he's not physically ready, but there should be a lesson learned from last year. Players are already seeing a higher rate of early season injuries due to less practice time because of the current CBA, resulting in players being less conditioned and more prone to injury. If I am remembering correctly, last year during the offseason and training camp we really babied Berry and significantly cut back on his practice time. In my opinion that very likely had a role in his injury.

I was taught as a youth to use the apostrophe when referring to decades (The 80's), but I never liked it. It makes no sense. I stopped using the apostrophe over time, but I always feel like I'm going to get a lower grade as a result.

I think the corner they drafted this year ends up starting outside this year.

Sure would be nice. If you hit on that Tremon Smith pick big time, it’s the kind of player that might just push them over the top in the next couple of years. Honestly, if the corners are pretty decent, I don’t see how this team loses more than 5 games. The offense is just too loaded.

It reminds me of Pittsburgh a few years back when their offense was really starting to get scary but the defense wasn’t very good. I picked them to miss the playoffs once, but the offense alone was good enough to win them 11 that year.

To be clear, I think our current defense >>> those 2014/2015 Steelers defenses.

Disagree. Nelson is decent in the slot and I actually think Redmond (A former 3rd round pick btw) and Smith will surprise people this season. Redmond was very highly rated coming out of college and his career has only stalled because of injuries. IF he stays healthy this pre-season then he just might play imo.

I agree about Nelson. But for me Amerson and Redmond are clear unknowns, they could be good or just plain bad.

I am not sure expecting anything out of a 6th round pick in his rookie year is a good thing.

All in all, I just hope Veach has a clear plan B if it becomes obvious that Amerson and Redmond are not up to par.

Sounds like Mahomes and the offense struggled today.

The Chiefs had their finished their first week of offseason practice and Thursday’s workout wasn’t a good one for quarterback Patrick Mahomes II and the rest of the starting offense. Mahomes was 4-of-15 with an interception in full team drills and 7-of-12 with an interception in 7-on-7 drills. The interception in full team drill was on a pass tipped at the line of scrimmage and caught by linebacker Tanoh Kpassagnon. On the interceptions, coach Andy Reid said, “You want to test what you can get away with at these camps so you’re going to have interceptions. That doesn’t bother me. You repeat it and now that’s a problem. But you want to test it and see what you can get away with. That’s all part of the way this thing works.’’ - Adam Teicher

4. Steven Nelson had a good day

One of the top plays of the day came from veteran cornerback Steven Nelson, who is the only cornerback who played considerable snaps last year at cornerback for the Chiefs that returns this season.

Early in a 7-on-7 period, Nelson jumped in front of a Mahomes pass out to the left for the interception and returned it for what would have been a touchdown.

A bit later, Nelson provided fantastic coverage in the red zone on a play that was specifically designed for Nelson, who was on an island, to bite, and he didn't.

It's going to be a big year for him and his defensive teammates had plenty to say about it after practice on Thursday. We'll have more on that next week.

This guy has been on Instagram all offseason talking about having a breakout year so I found this interesting. He told me he’d be playing outside more.

Nothing about Mahomes' NFL career to this point indicates he can't get better and learn from mistakes. His growth at playing in a pro offense over the course of preseason + 16 weeks last year, is just one example.

Some team would have to take on nearly 8.7 million for his salary for that to happen. Could happen I guess, but seems unlikely. It would cost us that same 8.7 to cut him too. Looks like he has the roster made this fall.

From Matt Derrick:

The passing game appeared more crisp than during last week’s open OTA practice. An unofficial count had Patrick Mahomes 9-of-12 passing during 11-on-11 drills and 8-of-12 during seven-on-seven work. That included incompletions on four deep balls, a drop by wide receiver Tyreek Hill and a pass broken up by safety Daniel Sorensen.

No, it doesn’t mean jack squat. But you know there won’t be a peep about it anywhere like all the attention that was put toward the ‘bad practice’ last week..

Better hand technique to keep OL off of his pads and locking him down as a EDGE rusher. If Kpass was a DT/DL it wouldn't be as much of an issue due to pass rush and run defense responsibilities with his raw ability.

And then on Thursday, Reid mentioned that there were a couple of more names added to that list of guys not practicing right now, including the NFL’s reigning rushing leader Kareem Hunt.

Reid said Hunt is dealing with a hamstring strain but added that he doesn’t believe it’s anything serious. He also mentioned that undrafted free agent receiver Byron Pringle out of Kansas State isn’t practicing due to a calf strain.

Reid concluded by saying that linebacker Dee Ford, who missed most of last year with a back injury, is coming along in his rehab and is now working in individual periods, but not the team portions of practice.

WR Sammy Watkins has played for Andy Reid for less than three months but said the Chiefs coach is already making him a better player. “He’s helped me in this short amount of time with being a complete receiver, not just being (a receiver who) runs go-routes,’’ Watkins said. “I’ve got to learn the whole route tree. The standard (Reid wants), he called me out in meetings. That’s what you need as a player. I take full advantage of all of those things. I’ve never been in an offense like this, around a coach that feels like he’s obsessed with the game and he makes you want to be obsessed with it, too, to know more about the offense.’’ Watkins, the Chiefs’ major free-agent acquisition, is playing all of the various positions. “This offense is the broadest offense I’ve ever been in, he said. “I just feel like you get more opportunities on linebackers, safeties. It all depends on technique. He has ridiculously long arms so he should be able to keep the tackles hands off of him (1" longer than Clowney). And while he may not always have his hand in the dirt, I would like to see him as a DE on obvious passing downs in the hope he can produce as well as guys like Calais Campbell (6'8) Clowney (6'7"), Peppers (6'7"), Bosa (6'6"), Daniel Hunter (6'6"), Carlos Dunlap (6'6"), Jared Allen (6'6"), Myles Garrett (6'5"), JPP (6'5").

This team is going to be Andy's best in KC.

Offensively, they may remind people of the Chiefs in '03. At least, efficiently and scoring wise.

Defensively, they will be much improved. Losing Tamba and DJ at this point in their career is addition by subtraction. Even at replacement level players, it is an upgrade at both positions. I don't like our CB depth situation but Peters, while still having a good year, had the worst year I felt of his career. Plus, he became allergic to tackling, which used to be a strength. This defense should be middle of the pack IMO with potential to be top 10.

some deep rosy homerism here, but i like it! :homer::toast:

flip side view, offense could be huge roller coaster of ups and downs. lots of big WOW plays and lots of head scratcher 'just, wow' interceptions too. This will put the defense in some very bad spots.

i do expect the front 7 to be much improved on the ground game perspective, but still have concerns about how consistent we can rush the passer. if we dont get good pressure, our patchwork secondary can still e exploited. i'm as hopeful as the next guy all the pieces align for a nicely finished puzzle board but realistically i still see the cb group with too many Qs.

this feels like a bumpy ride 8-8 season, with a +/- of 2 games if it turns bad or good. a wild card berth would be a very successful year and anything beyond that would be legendary.

I couldn’t agree more with this. Mahomes will be fun to watch this season, but he will be up and down especially against the schedule KC has. The defense has been re-worked and will take time to gel. My hope is they really come together over the last 4-6 games of the season, and squeek into the playoffs.

Did Mahomes throw a lot of "Just Wow Interceptions" in College? I don't watch college ball much, but have not seen him being totally reckless with the ball since he got here.

I think when he does throw one- it will be because he was trying to make a play, maybe into an ultra-tight window and the D-back ends up with better position over our receiver. Nothing from practice or the reports coming out of Arrowhead have stated he is just throwing it up for grabs. The Denver game he had the ball sail high on him. It was more from being pumped up and not setting his feet- than making a terrible decision.

So you are predicting 8-8 with a 2 game cushion either way. Anywhere from 6-10 to 10-6. I think your bases are covered-lol

Excellent post!

Ragland was on Chanel 5 News last night during the sports segment. He talked about the Chiefs Defense being run over the last 2 years in the Playoffs and how embarrassed they were by their performance. He stated that basically, the number 1 goal of the organization was to be more physical in the run-stopping department. He said that is their main focus on defense-stopping the run. He mentioned he has changed his work out routine and the loss is always on his mind. Ragland talks like a leader and seems very focused on the upcoming season.

I was not a fan of the trade when it happened since he was coming off an injury, but I have grown to like him. He and Hitchens are going to be hitting hard in the middle of that defense and I think they will set the tone for the entire unit.

Ragland and Hitchens make a very nice ILB duo. I don't think DJ was ever particularly physical; it was always the knock on him. He was a great player, but his athleticism was his calling card. Hitchens should be a major upgrade. Add in all the rotation options on the d-line, the return of Berry, and I don't see anyway this defense isn't improved.
