Kate Spade's funeral set for Thursday

Betsey Guzior

A funeral for designer Kate Spade is scheduled for Thursday in her hometown of Kansas City.

A Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Redemptorist, where her grandparents were married, The Kansas City Star reports.

Spade, 55, died June 5 of an apparent suicide in her New York City apartment.

The popular designer, who brought a sleek and modern style to the handbags and accessories she created, was born in Kansas City and attended the University of Kansas before completing a journalism degree at Arizona State University.

Her obituary was listed under her maiden name, Katherine Noel Brosnahan, as well as Kate Spade. She leaves behind her husband, Andy, who was also her business partner, and a 13-year-old daughter.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or to Wayside Waifs, a Kansas City-based animal shelter.

Comedian David Spade, Kate Spade's brother-in-law, has donated $100,000 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, People reports. “More people suffer from mental health issues than we may realize but no one should ever feel ashamed to reach out for support,” he said.

THey should make all suicides open casket even if a shotgun was used

Let idiots know they'll be embarrassed by poopy pants, ogling eyes when they're photographed by the coroner and then released to the public, and open caskets

The WSJ had an opEd by a doctor dealing with suicidal patients - he said "they never think of others, I have to remind them to think of their families, then sometimes they'll actually calm down"

If society promised these idiots their memory will be used in novelty, that might matter more to them than their own families. People love themselves!

I don't have any ideas. I never said I did. I'm just entertaining yours. :hmmm:

I figured. So by definition my ideas can not be worse than yours, only equal or better.

Now, here are some points to consider:

1. My ideas can't result in more suicides. Only the same level or fewer. Nobody will kill themselves hearing my ideas.

2. "Understanding" a suicide only convinces people it's acceptable societally. That's a bad thing.

3. The Church (all 3 monotheistic religions actually) has promised hellire for suicides. That's undoubtedly prevented an assload of them.

4. People are vain! Kate may not have cared about abandoning her own child, but maybe if she knew her photo of her hanging would be publicly distributed, laughed at, and her daughter would see it.....maybe she thinks twice?

5. People don't care about anything after death? Bullshit. People care about all sorts of things. Look at how they want their names on buildings, how they design and decorate their funerals/coffins/burial plots, how they structure inheritances.

People who are depressed enough to kill themselves are so far beyond caring about embarrassment.

You want fewer suicides? I have a novel idea how about we actually give a shit about mental illness other than treating it like people are nuts and the stigma that goes with that.

We are supposed to give a shit about a person we dont know have never met and never will? That was up to the people close to her like family and loved ones.

Best we can do is "well thats a shame, prayers."

That stigma died out 30 years or more ago. Besides, that industry admits they can't cure depression. So they treat it with drugs for them to feel better.
And it's commonly SSRI drugs that are used to treat it. These also list suicide on the bottle as a side-effect ( as well as psychotic violence).
A lot more people today are treated with them. So I don't see the stigma you claim to exist if more have received treatment.

How did my post have anything to do with your politics? You’re the one projecting. I just find it hilarious that you speak as if you know anything about the mental health industry. You continue to spout off that “they even admit they can’t cure anything” and “all they do is prescribe medication”.

There are hundreds of physical ailments that regular doctors can’t cure, but they are able to treat the symptoms. That is what therapists try to do. Also, if you knew any I’d had regular conversations with any therapists, you would know that medication is always the last resort.

I was. My wife, too. I can absolutely see how someone looks at suicide as a cowardice move.

My friend took the easy way out and pushed all of his pain upon his wife, 2 children under 10, and friends. That’s pretty selfish from my perspective , but I have no idea how truly bad it was for him.

My SIL left two children under 10, also.

There are some interesting studies on failed suicide attempts. The gist: most don't retry. Even some who survived The Golden Gate plunge (our tour guide in SF joked they "the ultimate failures" and I was the only tourist who laughed) recall saying "Oh no!", as if they regretted instantly what they were doing.

I think it's a moment of temporary insanity and from that perspective, I suppose I can have some empathy. But barring only the most extreme mental illness, many of these folks had no right to do this to their loved ones. It isn't always as unavoidable as defenders say

A buddy of mine committed suicide a couple of weeks ago. Certainly gives you a whole new perspective on it when it hits close to home.

We were at a housewarming party for another friend that Saturday night. I talked to him a lot that night and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. We were talking about our sons' upcoming baseball games including an out of town tournament, laughing and joking, talking about his recent positive job interview, etc.

He and his wife left the party and he seemed just fine. He had had a few drinks, but nothing out of the ordinary. His son who is my son's age stayed at the party because he was sleeping over at someone else's house that night who was also attending the party. We left shortly after they did. When they got home, I guess he and his wife got in to some sort of fight and he took off. She went to bed. Guessing he drank more. His wife woke up the next morning to find him hanging in a tree in their backyard. No note, no nothing.

Obviously there had to have been some issues, but I think the alcohol had something to do with it. It's a strange mix of emotions...sadness, guilt (Did we miss something? What if something had gone slightly different that night?), and certainly anger as well...how could he have done something like that to his wife and boys? I honestly feel though that it was a spur of the moment decision that if he could, he'd regret. One that forever will impact his wife, his boys, and his family and friends.

Both, I'm sure. But like I said, he felt pretty positive about his prospects for the job he interviewed for (a post office job as a letter carrier). As it turns out, we found out after the fact that he had indeed gotten the job and they were going to call him that week to let him know.

I knew a woman who worked selling life insurance and she saw a lot of policies being paid out for men who commit suicide due to lose of income. I think there is a law that protects companies that sell these life insurance policies against anyone who commits suicide within the first two years of signing one.
