One of the most low-key, flukey appearing, yet bordering on epic, goals I've seen in a while.

Semi-equivalent of Lebron nonchalantly tossing the ball over his shoulder from half court tied at halftime and swishing it at the buzzer.

French striker gets the narrowest of windows at the 18 with a bounding pass into center. Gets a quick toe flick on it and the ball rockets right over the goalkeep, clangs off the top bar and down into goal. Zip, boom, bam, . . . even took a second for the commentators to even register what happened.

God I love the artistry of a buildup goal.

Argentina with all the momentum and a goal lead, then a miscue on the midfield wing.

Iceland strings together a ton of masterful passes, and settles into goalfront pressure quickly, . . . until one of the crosses connects and just like that it's tied.

Lots to soak in and enjoy.

EDIT: The more I watch, the more impressed I am by Iceland's facility in creating opportunities.

ARG is top 5 and a favorite. ICE is rising fast, but still only rose from mid-100s to mid-20s in ranking.

In the Cup format, this tie severely hampers ARG going forward.

Like if the Chiefs were late in the season on the verge in a tight race for a playoff spot, then we tie in prime time at home to Cleveland.

FIFA rankings don't really mean anything so I would not use them as a rubric. Like at all.

Iceland finished first in the European qualifiers in a group that had Turkey and Croatia. Croatia is a very high quality team with a bunch of really good players and a couple of superstars.

Iceland also beat England in Euro 2016 to reach the quarterfinals.

They are a good team. I didn't understand Fox's coverage of them.

Argentina may still win this WC, but I honestly think they blew their wad in 2014. They're aging now. Also, I feel like Argentina's teams of late 90's to mid 2000's were their historic best.

That was a good call in the box, unfortunately it's only made when the official feels like it. I guess Croatia got the official on a good day (for them), because that happens on most corners these days. But an "accurate" call nonetheless.

"Soccer officials" should be brought in to defend the calls/non-calls in the box. The Geman dude clearly dragged-down the Mexican in the box, it was a clear attempt to disrupt a very possible scoring play, no call.

Perhaps the most consistently subjective play.call in sports.

I do agree they went a little overboard with the harassment on Neymar. It was pretty obvious that was Switz's plan to begin with, to rattle him a little and perhaps get him frustrated, it worked. However, For the most part I did not see the ref not give neymar the calls that the anaylsts were complaining about after the game. The tugging of the shirts all that stuff, neymar was always rewarded the penalty's, it was the shoulder to shoulder stuff that I witnessed him not receiving which is exactly how it should be. Shoulder to shoulder is perfectly legal.

That being said, this world cup to me is seeing a lot of more "let them play" type things than anything. It wasn't just Neymar that wasnt getting all the calls, there was the brazilian forward that was dragged to the ground in the box and no call was made, but there was a few cases where brazil players fouled the switz players and no calls were made either. It is also good to note, that switz is a much more physical team compared to brazil.

The argument anaylsts were having afterwards was you need to protect the star players, and I do agree with that to a degree, however we cannot have all the star players playing so light on their feet always looking to grab a call.

One play I was annoyed with was when neymar had 2 defenders on him, he nutmegged the defender, and tried to legit "run" through the defender and instead fell to the ground, and was given the penalty which I feel like is complete BS.

To put it in short, there were some calls that needed to be made, but there were also some calls that had no right being called so in a way it all balances out in the end.

Soccer is such a complex game, with such a particularized set of skills to draw from, that there really are only two physical attributes that qualify as automatic advantages.

Straight-line speed on breakaways and height when performing headers.

Maybe, . . . fast twitch reflexes for a goalie.

So much of the rest of it can be game planned and platooned.

Soccer is so much more about skill, endurance and team synergy than imposing your will physically.

Yup, right idea wrong example. There are lot of fast and quick as hell basketball and football players especially who might be excellent if they committed to soccer at a young age. Hard to think of good examples because the game is so different. Just the point that our best athletes are often focusing on different sports. Other countries, their best athletes start playing soccer in the womb.

Nah, there's an age below which the size and weight of the ball is greater proportional to the head and neck. Though many can head safely, there is at least an argument for banning it in recreational play.

But by your mid-teens, a regulation ball poses no risk for a healhy individual to knowingly strike with their head.

There's still danger in being blindsided by a ball strike, or a point-blank strike. But the kind of headers where you return a goalkeeper's volley or try to redirect a ball in the box is just fine.

Yeah, I oversold that a little bit. I'm just of the mindset that sports comes with inherent dangers. I'm not a fan at all of limiting the game and the soccer coaches I've talked to think it's teaching kids bad soccer habits early. I

That Spain game yesterday was so frustrating to watch. Iran is fucking garbage and would never make the WC if they didn't get to qualify through Asia. The play acting, cheating and time wasting was so cringy. I've seen teams outmatched and still go down swinging but having 11 players in the box and then not even trying to counter, just booting the ball up the field on every dispossession? How big are their gaping vaginas? It was the most pathetic "effort" I've ever seen at the world stage.

OTOH, Belgium looks really good. They have a litany of starters, in their primes, who are either the best in the world or top 5 in the world at their positions. Unless FIFA interferes I completely expect to see them in the finals.

That Spain game yesterday was so frustrating to watch. Iran is ****ing garbage and would never make the WC if they didn't get to qualify through Asia. The play acting, cheating and time wasting was so cringy. Screw Iran. That was horrible soccer.

We need more European and South American teams.

I wouldn't put it past FIFA to give them their own region to "validate" more oil countries being in it. Their greed and corruption knows no bounds.

not necessarily. He and Argentina made the finals in the last cup. They seem to be having a terrible tournament.

Why is Neymar acting like they just won the Cup? They basically beat Vermont.

I'm leaning towards the drama king option. Great player, though.

I understand that but it stunk to watch. It is the main reason why people have a bias against soccer. It is like faking injuries in football.

I'm certainly not advocating for it. It was pathetic. But I get why they did it. If you're(not you personally)going to follow soccer, it comes with the territory especially in talent wise lopsided international matches, like this one.

Quick question, are you a Hawaii grad or fan? If so, we should have a fun signature bet on the Army-Hawaii game.

Born and raised on Oahu and my dad is a grad, so I'm a huge fan. However, in this case huge and dumb don't correlate. You'd have to give me points. This team is going to be brutal and God awful on the road.

I am good for that. Like I said, it is a friendly bet. The signature wouldn't be anything vulgar.

Haha. Don't worry, it will get better soon. I generally pull for Hawaii when they are not playing Army. You guys are fun to watch. Great traditions and bowl game.

Fuck that "necessary evil" bs. I'm a soccer fan, and think the flopping is beyond ridiculous, and hurts the game. If a match is lopsided, then take your lumps and get better - don't try to game the refs. It's bush league.
