https://chiefsupdate.com/2018/06/23/the-nfl-rejects-laurent-duvernay-tardifs-m-d-jersey-request/

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif officially became a doctor this offseason when he graduated from medical school at McGill University in Montreal. Soon after his graduation, he requested the NFL allow him to add M.D. on his jersey marking him the first active player in this league to become a licensed Medical Doctor in a very visible way.

Sadly per reports, the NFL refused, although this ruling has not deterred the young to petition for a reevaluation of the ruling. Until then he will be unable to mark the accomplishment on his uniform. This accomplishment can and will never be taken from him, even if the NFL says no to the title on the jersey.

I doubt the NFL will ever allow it as they do not want to any player to get individual notoriety.

Which is also the reason for the rule about not taking off your helmet while on the field. Doesn't stop them from marketing players anyway. I have always found this to be an interesting double standard with the NFL.

You’d think the NFL would want to take advantage and show that it’s players come from all walks of life. With all the hits the NFL has taken to its image, if Goodell were smart, he would let him do it.

LTD should be proud to have his name on the back of a pro football uni. That is much more rare and elite than MD. He will have the white coat with MD after his name in off season and after his NFL career. With money and backing plus a lot of drive anyone can become a MD. All the hard work and money in the world and even drive wont get you into the NFL without elite skills and talent.

They need to switch to an alphanumeric system to create more IDs. It's going to become harder and harder to retire a jersey in the future. But if jersey numbers can include letters and numbers, the possibilities open up strongly. You could have 89, 16, A4, 6D, and of course in Duvernay-Tardif's case, he could just take MD as his jersey.

I'll second your motion that it's obnoxious.

Now that you mention it, it's obnoxious if you're a medical doctor, too. There's no reason to mention it other than to show your ego.

On a related note, I went to a conference a while back, and the registration had a place to put your degree. Whatever. It was on the form so I filled it out. Then when I showed up, they had it printed on everyone's name tags.

I find/found it pretentious.

For those who work, or have worked, in customer service and the person demands you use their title. When I still did that... had a guy ask for my supervisor because I would not address him as Father. His account quite literally was named Father XYZ and notes on the account that he was particular about it.

One of my friend's had a Todd Blackledge jersey for at least fifteen years. I'm not talking about getting it in the mid eighties either. But it was a statement about the team not drafting and developing quarterbacks which he felt was a direct link to not winning a playoff game. He picked it up some time in the late nineties not long before 2000

Why? Do you have a closet full of Chiefs jerseys with obscure nameplates/numbers?

Because i think it would be fucking cool that's why. All i got is a Tony Richardson autograph jersey that was given to me and the only jersey i ever bought was #12 Brodie Croyle because we drafted a quarterback that probably could have been good if wasn't a vaginal wimp.

I think it would be cool to have a jersey of a doctor lineman, otherwise who gives a fuck why?

It isn't so much as I am invested in your wardrobe so I give a fuck. More like I didn't fully understand so I have just enough of a fuck to seek clarification as to your motivation. Not that I must endorse your purchases nor your choice in whom to rep... merely curiosity and conversation.
