Went to a pinball convention this weekend. I had no idea my son would love it as much as I have. I am considering purchasing an Attack from Mars remake. Damn these things are expensive. My problem is I have no idea how much it costs to maintain these things. My understanding is the new electronics are supposed to make the new ones bulletproof but the reality of it is I actually have no idea. Anyone ever buy one of these things? Any pointer would be appreciated.

Some of my favorites:
Attack from Mars
8 ball deluxe
Adams Family

Hell I can't even remember a bunch of them. What are your favorites?

I'm not a pinball wizard, but lately I have been a little nostalgic and have been wondering about adding a couple of the old arcade games I used to like back in the day to the basement.

Maintenance is one of my big questions.

they are more reliable but fall short of bulletproof. I really liked attack from mars. the sequel to that table was Revenge from Mars. RfM utlized pepper's ghost to project a hologram over the playfield.

all my favorite tables were from Williams electronics.
-Firepower
-Wizard
-Revenge from Mars
-Gorgar

if you want to play some pinball on a tiny budget... I'd recommend buying a copy of Williams pinball hall of fame for ps3 or xbox360.

there are a couple of virtual pinball games on PC too.

the pinball arcade has tables from 5 former manufacturers.
Zaccaria pinball has 30 tables from that Italian manufacturer
------------------------------------------------------------------------

use the database at http://www.aurcade.com to find arcades and specific games.

there are 43 Attack from mars tables in the lower 48 states. there are 3 AfM remakes. none of them are in CA though.

there are 140+ arcades in CA. several are in SF

The Black Knight was my favorite pinball game in the early 80's. Dropped a bunch of coin back in the day playing this AWESOME game.

Played Black Knight 2000 a couple weeks ago. We have a small local chain of arcades here in the Austin area now (https://www.pinballzarcade.com/). Sadly they do not have my all time favorite at any of their locations, 8 Ball Deluxe. I used to own that game back in the day!

They do sell a few of them but yes, they are expensive. That BK2000 was available for about $5500. It was in great shape but damn!

I can justify spending the money if you are going to use it for a few years and sell it. They seem to hold value really well. It's repairs that really gets me.

I'm seeing a lot of remake consoles that you can put into a cabinet that have 200+ titles. I don't want to spend a fortune but I think it would be cool to have a couple of donkey kong and other favorites...just because. Might even think about something like operation wolf for my gun vault.

I played a lot of pinball back in the day. Most of it was electromagnetic stuff, not the computerized boards of today.

I bought two older EM machines and they are still running fine. I had a few things burn out of them but I have the schematics and debugging them isn't that hard if you take the time to study them.

The main thing is to buy one in good shape. The bad thing can be finding parts.

Austin TX has a place called 'Pinballz' thats an old school arcade and has 100s of old classic pinball machines and arcade games. Took my kids there a few months ago and they loved it.

They truly do a great job of of taking care of the old machines. Lots of love and affection.

Check it out if your ever in Austin.

there has been a resurgence in arcades and renewed interest in old games that started around 2009. The documentary, King of Kong: fistful of quarters, is most responsible for that. It came out in 2007 and gained a following. 2 years later there was a live competition featuring the movies stars. the aurcade website started about that time too. the list of arcades in the US shot up from 400 to about 1200 in 2014. there have been hundreds of arcades that shut down in that time too.

I've been going to Manitou penny arcade every year for 15 years running. I'd bet they do 1k visitors on an average weekend. I'm always surprised at how young the crowd is and how much it skews female. there's always tons of kids too.

Here is mine in that you own it or it was your favorite to play?

The Adams Family you mentioned earlier is awesome.

I have never played Twilight Zone. That is one I would really like to find.

Sorry, that was a nerd joke. That's the old Microsoft Pinball software game that used to ship with new Windows 95 computers.

I don't own a pinball machine. But if I did it would absolutely be Addams Family...

I was a big 8 Ball Deluxe guy. Odds and Evens before that.

Man thats a way cool setup.

Question, Wheres the pinball machines? You can get more cool stuff in your room without pinball machines?

They're so dang expensive! We'd like a Ghostbusters, but I can't drop 5k on one of them!

Thanks as I forgot how often I played that in my youth. I think that was one of the first machines that went from 5 balls to 3 balls for .25

I used to repair arcade boards and pinball boards. I have a Tempest, Defender and Joust along with boxes of boards from Atari and Williams. I had a Disco Fever and Firepower pinball machines. Pinball machines require a fair amount of work to keep running well. Remember there is a rather heavy steel ball flying around a painted wooden playfield. The rubber on the bumpers, the spring switches, actuators, solenoids, flippers, targets, etc. are all maintenance items. I would keep track of the games played and every 50 games, I would pull the glass off of the playfield, clean and wax the board, replace the pinball(s) if necessary and adjust the switches and check condition of the rubber bumpers.

I traded the two pinball machines along with some cash for a Jeep about eight years ago. I needed a vehicle and a friend was more than willing to make me pay. He really wanted the pinball machines. I mentioned that these were fairly high maintenance items and that while I would help him learn, I wouldn't be spending my time fixing them. It wasn't long before he was calling me saying that they had quit working. It's amazing how fast these will deteriorate without proper care.

These were the electronic types of machines and I've seen a few posters with electro-mechanical types. These are really high maintenance and the score reels can be problematic. Of course, replacement parts are hard to find and while there are a few companies that specialize in replacement parts, they can be expensive.

I don't repair these things much anymore; it used to be fun and now it just seems like work.

I have neither! I have attempted to buy several Galaxians, as well as Gaplus/Galaga3, but all the deals have fallen through. It's very tough to buy these machines in these markets right now

yeah, every seller I have talked to wants way too much for the games. but the demand is there, that's a good thing. its also a good thing that I haven't bought any Williams games. I dont think I would get much done if I had a Robotron.

so... GoT are you buying/collecting games for the wife and kids? or do you just like the aesthetic of cabinets in rows?
