View Full Version : Other Sports NBA Topic: The All Boring Team

I was thinking today of all the greatest players of all time in the NBA are usually very flashy players -- understandably so.

So let's put together an All Time NBA First Team (and Second Team if the interest is there) full of players who exclusively are not highlight package players, who rarely made announcers scream, who rarely inspired the imagination.

Starting center is probably Tim Duncan.

Starting point guard is absolutely John Stockton -- the best non-flashy player in NBA history.

Who else you got?

Tim Duncan, Grant Hill.

Love the NBA - can't wait for the season to begin.

Stockton wasn't flashy.

It's hard to be flashy when you can barely dribble with your left hand.

It's actually kinda stunning a guy with no left hand could accomplish what he did.

Dave Cowens and John Havelichek pretty much defined utilitarian basketball players but I think the current hotdogs and showboating didn't exist back then much.

Oscar Robertson was another along with Wes Unseld

When Stockton was in Barcelona doing his thing on the Dream Team, the majority of the players (especially Magic, Barkley, Jordan, etc.) couldn’t go anywhere without being just mobbed by people. Stockton was able to walk down the streets of Barcelona with his family, unnoticed and unrecognized. He even came up to a couple people who were wearing Dream Team t-shirts that had his picture on it and would ask, “hey you like the Dream Team?” They’d be like, “yeah! Love them!” He’d then say, “you ever meet anything be on the team?” And they’d be like, “no” or “I met Charles Barkley the other night.” He would then point at his own picture on their shirt and say, “how about him, you ever meet him?” And they’d be like, “no, never met that guy.” Lol, he actually had to tell them who he was.

That’s boring.

Not sure I agree with this one :hmmm:

I also met Robert Horry at an NBA charity golf event about 20 years ago in NJ for sports agent Keith Glass. He was pretty boring! ROFL

Lol yeah, and it was awesome. I freaking hated Starks and thought that was hilarious.

Along with talking shit, he would subtly cheap-shot guys and somehow make it appear as if he were the one being cheap-shotted by acting all theatrical and melodramatic about it. Dude was funny as hell.

Reggie was a lot of things... but boring?

The guy who gave the choke sign and grabbed his crotch while staring down Spike Lee is boring?

No way.

He's the only guy I know of who been punched by Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Paul Pierce.

Probably got really obnoxious running through screens all day while reggie would push off with his boney ass elbows.

This is not relevant to the topic, but I’m just thinking of all these past basketball players and got stuck on Dominique Wilkins, who I think may be the most underrated basketball player that I know of. Dude was freaking awesome. I wonder how many championships he could have won with a different team. Hell, the Jazz selected him 3rd overall in the draft and traded him off... imagine how good that Jazz team would have been with Wilkins, Malone and Stockton....

Wilkins is very under-rated in the public eye, but not by anyone who played against him.

I figured so... I remember seeing an interview with Bird where he was talking about how good he thought Wilkins and Chris Webber were.

Well when they did the top 100 Wilkins DID come in 44th, which is great.

So maybe he isn't under-rated, just kinda forgotten.

Those mid-90s Jazz teams might be the boringest of all time. I see Stockton and Malone have been mentioned. Jeff Hornacek, Bryon Russell. Greg Ostertag, but that's almost not fair since most teams in that era had a giant boring white center.
