OK guys, I get it if it's not your cup of tea, but I'm a MUSIC fan, and I find stuff in just about every genre (except nü-cuntry) to enjoy.

Mac Miller was interesting - not your average mumble rapper, guy had vision, something to say, and a cleverly unique style about him when he said it.

Did i say 11:40? I meant 21:40.

(LOL ... just a little Planet humor, there, Mr. MTG#10.)

There are tons of people who do don't like stuff I like. Heck, I even like Celene Dion's song "Ashes" from Deadpool 2 which many of my compadres think is overproduced crap (which it probably is, in all honesty). I also like Alfie Boe's version of "Bring Him Home" the best, Ginger Baker's drumming, Miles Davis' smooth jazz, some "pop" (not a ton), a whole lot of rock of all sorts, and a few country songs. In my entire life so far, I've liked maybe 2 "rap" songs and "2009" is one of them.

Mostly (I suppose if I were to analyze my playlists), I guess I don't conflate wallpaper as art. Most of the time (like in the case of "2009"), there is some unique fusion of genres or exploration that affects my sensibilities in a positive way. The effect of combining a string quartet, jazz motifs, and rap lyrics caught me off-guard and it stuck.

Still, it isn't a 1-size-fits-all world, nor would I probably enjoy that world very much if it was. Thanks for taking my word on it ... even if it didn't work out.

OK, that was much better for sure. But still, it grates on me how the rhythm of his actual rapping doesn't sync well with the beat of the rest of the band. Like at the point 16:16 in that song, I thought he almost forgot the words or something it was so noticeable. The rest of the band is playing so beautifully, and he's just doing his own thing to his own beat. It comes off like he's too messed up to perform properly.

LOL I know how you feel, Mr. jjjayb.

Even though I don't expect others to join me in sympatheia, here's how it strikes me (from a musical appreciation perspective, anyhow).

I get the fact that Mac has a crap voice. It's weak, his intonation sucks ass, and his tempo is all over the damn place. The band, however, is solid and tight and talented as hell.

Then I remember that Mac wrote this stuff. Since he's the writer, he can perform it however he chooses and, as an observer, I can either choose to see past his limitations or not.

Personally, I can see past them ... in limited servings. I could not and have not listened to a full album of Mac Miller. It is not pleasing to my ear. That one song though (2009) is, IMHO, remarkable.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I get that musical taste is entirely subjective and absolutely subject to an endless examination on an intellectual level. However, this douche at most if he is lyrically gifted is extremely limited in his end product. I am shocked that an advanced mind is stimulated by this utter tripe, seriously what are you taking from this simpleton's thoughts and ideas that you deem so profound. He is,undoubtedly and emphatically, a talent-less moron.

Feel free to amicably defend your position to the contrary, again I ask...please show me the talent...
The talent is in the wordplay.

Bob Dylan was not viewed as a 'great singer'; it was all about his inflection, the wordplay and how he strung those words together that formed these tapestries...

Don't get me wrong - I'm not comparing Mac Miller to Bob Dylan, but there IS some symmetry there.

Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Mark E. Smith...

All of them had a 'different' way of working around the limitations of their voice, and by doing so, transcending those limitations...

Mac Miller was like that - that limitaton in his voice is what made it so 'human', so 'everyman', so 'REAL'...and THAT is the symmetry between all of those artists I mentioned.

Besides, music is about feelings. I like music that makes me feel. Usually, the grittier and rougher around the edges, the more appealing I find it. Polished 'perfect' music isn't for me.

Put some real talent on the mic and you have something generationally special.

That band.....that’s some good stuff!

Does anyone have suggestions on something similar?

The Meters/Funky Meters, The Roots, Guru's Jazzamatazz, Richard Groove Holmes, Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, and, in a 'fractured fairy tale' kind of way, Beastie Boys when they play their instruments.

“In May 2018, Miller was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and hit and run after allegedly crashing into and knocking down a power pole and fleeing the scene with two passengers. Police arrived at the scene, ran Miller's license plate number, and obtained his address. Miller confessed to the crash when police arrived at his home. Miller was taken into custody and released on $15,000 bail.”

We lost us a good’n!

Dude, you're pouring cold water all over my dream to form a Mac Miller cover band.

Genuinely didn't know who he was when I heard the news, and I'm not entirely out of touch with current music. Although current rap is not my thing at all so I guess it's not surprising i hadn't heard of him.

I listened to some of his stuff last night with some friends. Personally thought it sucked. Lyrics that were nonsense for the sake of rhyming and all low brow subject matter.

Art is subjective and of all the genres, music is probably the most subjective.

I accept that. No problem. But this is all I'd ask, before you hate on the dude, listen to "2009". I think it's found at 11:40 (or so) in the video included on post #22. It's a very unusual and worthy piece of work, IMO.

I enjoyed it FAX, I like the combination of instruments used etc...he has a nice little hook in the song as well which is often missing from rap these days (As far as I can tell I dont listen to much).

Yes! Yes! Exactly, Mr. Marcellus.

I am vindicated!!!

Honestly, that is the only song of his I really like ... and, IMO, the studio version (which I also checked out) isn't as strong as this live one, by a long shot.

So, one might ask, "Since you're not a big rap fan, how did you come across this rap dude in the first place, FAX?" To which I would quickly reply, "Good question! Thanks for asking."

And my answer is this; The Tiny Desk video of "2009" was liked by Patrick Mahomes II on Twitter. Seeing that, I thought to myself, "Hmmm ... what could this be? What kind of music does the Human Trebuchet like, I wonder? I'll bet it's a Texas Stomp or something."

That's when I clicked on the damn thing and heard the black girls fire up the string quartet and I thought, "Ah ... unexpected ... what is this strange music?" Then I heard the dude on the keys begin fiddling with the jazz motif and I thought, "Well ... I like smooth jazz. Cool." Then the rapper started rapping and I almost shut 'er down. Except I didn't.

I listened long enough to hear the lyrics ...

"She tell me that I get her high
'Cause an angel's s'posed to fly,
And I ain't askin', 'Why?'
no more."

And I thought, "Damn ... that's a clever (almost beautiful) lyric that fits really well with the piano part."

And that's when I first learned that there was at least one rap song that I could get behind. And so I did.

Apologies to all da bitchas and ho's dat is offended...you are just a grumpy ass fucking dude. Rap at one point in time was a great fucking outlet (still can be) for minorities to express the shit they see in the streets. As someone who came from the streets and has been shot at multiple times, it can get rough just because of where you live. Its all bastardized now. In its inception, it was pretty damned good. The art of storytelling is lost, but at one point in time, it was great! btw, there are a bunch of white dudes who grew up with nothing but minorities, so you will act like who you grew up with! Hell, im Mexican and we used to have a few black dudes that were hanging with us all the time. They used to get shit for me from the "afro americans" in my city, but like they used to say, i grew up with you dudes, thats my "loyalty" so to speak. Same with a few white guys. This was the 90's though! its been a while!
