View Full Version : Chiefs The Chiefs should trade for Tyrann Mathieu

Third thread's a charm, right?

The facts are these:

1. The Chiefs desperately need an upgrade at safety.

2. They were very close to trading for Earl Thomas, which shows that they know they desperately need an upgrade at safety.

3. Tyrann Mathieu is not quite Earl Thomas, but he has a history of high level play and this year has as many interceptions as the entire Chiefs defense and a rating of 72.3 from PFF, which qualifies as "Good."

4. Eric Murray has a 58.1 rating, which feels extremely generous. (Ron Parker has a 58.5)

5. Mathieu is on a one year contract, which means it wouldn't take a very high pick to get him.

6. Mathieu is also 26, which means he could be extended and become a long term upgrade.

7. Veach expressed interest in Mathieu this past offseason:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Veach says he&#39;s interested in Tyrann Matthieu if he can make the money work.</p>&mdash; Matt Derrick (@mattderrick) <a href="https://twitter.com/mattderrick/status/974055983768047618?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 14, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

8. Veach has already established a pattern of getting guys on the second or third try (see Watkins, Hitchens)

9. The Texans are going nowhere this season. If they lose a few more games, they can safely be considered sellers.

10. Perhaps most importantly, THE CHIEFS DESPERATELY NEED AN UPGRADE AT SAFETY

So, how many posts to make this happen???

With how the NFL is changing, the Chiefs probably only have a two or three year window with this group of skill position players given that Mahomes is on a cheap deal. If he's as good as people think, they'll be able to compete for years after, but it would be extremely hard for them to find a group of skill position players like this, given the salaries they'll command.

They should make as many moves like this as they can.

He’ll never have weapons as good as this group again in his career. Period.

That said, the defense has a ton of room to improve which also would help him over the years.

I gotta question, why do we have to act like this defense is a 1 year fix?

I mean im all for improving the D don’t get me wrong, but acting in this manner reeks of desperation. Then you have these teams like Seattle that know that and unrealistically up the ante for their own trade assets and it wouldn’t surprise me if other teams would do the same.

This team is not a 1 year fix. Im very happy that they got the QB and the weapons , surrounding cast and coach to compliment him. The D is lacking on all levels, trading for a safety isn’t going to fix it. It may help, but this D is in need of a complete overhaul. Im just thinking logically and realistically here guys. What we need to do is ****ing draft well and not trade for these veterans either with big contracts or are on the verge of hitting FA.

We should be trying to get as many picks as possible. And try to address as many positions as possible on D.

This defense can't be completely fixed in 1 year, no.

But the addition of an all-pro safety like Earl Thomas would have turned the defense' biggest weakness into its biggest strength. It would have made them the odds on favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

It's easy to sit back and say we have Mahomes for 10 years, but I do agree with Hamas... this offensive group is special. You don't want to waste them.

That said, there is zero reason to believe that Houston is looking to be a seller right now. I'm guessing if you ask the Texans front office they'd laugh at you. The reality is Veach needs to hit in the draft.

If they lose at least one of the next two and then lose to the Jags, they're dead in their division and have to compete with the Ravens/Bengals/Chargers/Titans for the wild card. They might not laugh at that point.

bricks
09-30-2018, 09:51 PM
They need natural, gifted passrushing specialists that play that position and not depend on these 3-4 DE/OLB or try to convert these DEs into passrushers. They depend on that too much and its not translating into success.

I know we joke about “willing” a trade into existence, but the age of social media is something special. the more people that tweet about it to media guys like Rappaport and Schaffer will get them to start looking into it and force them to give public answers which then reaches the casual fans who then put even more pressure on Veach to make a move. I’m 100% on the “let’s buy one” bandwagon. I say we go after both Peterson and Honey badger.

It comes down to what he sees the value perception at and what Collins wants. He's the same GM that let Josh Norman walk free, after being tagged, because the price wasn't right.

If they're not going to give him a long term contract than they would stupid to not field offers. Heck, they'd be stupid to not field offers anyhow. That team fucking sucks.
