"It’s not far-fetched to say that Reid has spent much of the last decade preparing for Mahomes’s arrival. The marriage of QB and coach is such a perfect union, bubbling in offensive fertility, that Washington State coach Mike Leach, himself well-versed in the art of scoring points, muses, “There’s times you wonder if [their pairing] should even be legal.”

Good read, but there are some leaps of logic I can't get behind.

The biggest one is that in it's current iteration, the Chiefs offense is reproducible. All this crazy playcalls have been here, but hasn't worked because defenses could crash down. What is working now is defenses have to account for the intermediate game and THAT creates space.

Yes, these plays are better than some Squirmin Herman Motherfucking Sack of Cunt Edwards 2 TE 2 WR garbage playcalls. Yes, these plays (if executed well) will be more efficient in creating favorable matchups for playmakers. But all of that can be mitigated by reasonable defenses if the QB can't make the defense create space by defending vertically.

If you don't believe me, just look at what works, Mahomes - who is a demi-god and Nick Foles who very much has a "fuck it chuck it" mentality. Compared to what doesn't - Alex and Trubiski. And Alex's success came largely in the scripted plays where he was far more comfortable going deep.

So it still, as it always has, comes down to finding a QB skilled enough to challenge defenses, not formations.

But that doesn't sell copy.

That's because I and a buddy burned a copy on the bar patio in the middle of game 4 of the Series to undo the curse.

Trubisky has been trying to go deep more often lately and it's helping a lot...

I think the article is a bit premature. Mahomes looks great but lets win something of meaning before getting crowned the future of the NFL. Remember when read option QBs were going to be the future? How many of them are still starters? How many of them are still in the league?

If they’re right, they’re right

If they’re wrong, then people will laugh and forget about it

Yes, these plays are better than some Squirmin Herman Mother****ing Sack of **** Edwards 2 TE 2 WR garbage playcalls. Yes, these plays (if executed well) will be more efficient in creating favorable matchups for playmakers. If you don't believe me, just look at what works, Mahomes - who is a demi-god and Nick Foles who very much has a "**** it chuck it" mentality. Compared to what doesn't - Alex and Trubiski. And Alex's success came largely in the scripted plays where he was far more comfortable going deep.

I'm getting tired of the bullshit narrative that the offense makes mahomes. Wentz has had struggles this year. Trubisky has been so so. These guys are supposedly copying the Reid blueprint. We have weapons, but you're absolutely right that mahomes is driving a ton of this. He has plenty of screens but he has punished every single team who dares to give him any room.

Trubisky is throwing a shitload of outside screens. Alex Smith wouldn't throw it through windows. Mahomes benefits off the screens and trickery, but most of his success is because defenses are terrified about giving him even an inch on intermediate routes. Even with an inch he's finding ways to level defenses. Especially in the red zone which is incredibly difficult.
