View Full Version : Chiefs Hypothetical: Mahomes, HFA and the TD record

The Franchise
12-06-2018, 03:29 PM
Here's the scenario.

Chiefs have won out and are 13-2 heading into the Week 17 game against the Raiders....in Arrowhead. We've locked up the #1 seed and HFA. Mahomes is sitting at 54 TDs for the season.....two away from breaking Manning's single season record of 55 TDs.

Would you want Mahomes out there to throw 2 TDs in the first half of the game? Or do you say fuck the record and sit him the entire game?

yes, put him in to see if he gets them by half. he deserves it.

Couldn’t care less about the record, BUT... I wouldn’t want him sitting for 2 full weeks before the divisional round. So yeah, let him play a half and see what happens.

Let him play the whole damn game and set the record at 60. Where's that fucking option????

My instinct is to say fuck the record and protect our miracle child, but then I'd really like him to make history AND get some reps in before the bye, so... send him out there for the first half, Andy!

If you send him out there, I wouldn't do anything more than a three step drop and get the ball out quickly.

Andy sent Hunt out there to get the rushing title, so I assure he will give Pat that option.

Just to clarify on my vote to sit him. If the "only" reason to play him is for the record, sit his ass.

TribalElder
12-06-2018, 04:13 PM
I could see that game getting dirty because its the raiders

the record would be cool but he will just smash it again next season

I hope we have it all locked up by week 17, give henne a few reps

I'll think about it when we have the option.

As of now the Patriots are right on KC's heels and they can't afford to lose even one game.

CaliforniaChief
12-06-2018, 05:02 PM
I'd be more apt to play him not only for the record but also because ours is a rhythm offense, and more than 1 week off could throw off their timing.

Just use extra protection on most of the snaps.

Don’t care. Those are meaningless fans stats.

Winning home playoff games and Super Bowls are way more important.

Yeah, this. The question about the record is irrelevant in this situation.

But I don't want to count dinosaurs before they're hatched. We have to fend off the cheating Patriots and the homeless Chargers first.

That would be my thoughts too. Lots of handoffs and screens. I don't mind sitting receivers. But there are ways to keep the QB protected out there. Dial it up a bit in the red zone to get him some TD looks. I've never liked the way Peyton Manning has looked when he's had way too much time off. If the record is on the line, his teammates (even the backups) will work their ass off to get him his touches.

12-06-2018, 05:16 PM
I would lean toward sitting him. But maybe you bring him out to throw some of those Wr reverse forward tosses in the redzone like in week 1 or something. Guys a gamer and I dont think he can switch it off. It would be the stupidest shit imaginable if he was to Jimmy G himself.

Halfcan
12-06-2018, 05:24 PM
You can't let the Faders beat us at home no matter if we have it wrapped up or not. Just on principle, you have to give those cheating bitches a beat down for the fans. Mahomes setting the TD record against them would be sweet.

You don't go into the playoffs with a loss to the Faders hanging over you. Bad Karma.

One side of me says sit him, how stupid would everyone feel if he were injured in pursuit of the record?

He is gonna be great for a long time, and have plenty of chances at it

The other side of me says, theres no guarantee he ever gets this close to the record again, defenses will continually adjust to Patrick, as well as the new pass happy rules

Place him among the best to ever play now, while its well within sight

---

In the end, I let him go out there and play... he was born to do this, trust him

Yes, go for the TDs. Superbowl is still several games away, TD record is right there for the taking. Would rather come off the year as GM with some good pub, than potentially get knocked out and have to answer Kareem Hunt & Marcus Peters questions.

Gotta play him if that happens. 2 away? That's like 7 minutes of playing against the Raiders. I normally would be all about sitting players, but a record like that is special. Not just to Mahomes, but to the team and fans.

Agree. Most records aren't really a big deal, but this one is. You don't give a guy an off day when he can break the season HR record. Same here.

In order for him to sit in week 17, New England would have to lose twice, Houston would (likely) have to lose once, and KC would have to win out at 13-2.

All of those things seem unlikely and I think the Raiders game will be a must win

I don't think the Patriots and Texans will allow the Chiefs to take it easy in the final game.

If he gets injured in a game that doesn't matter you guys will be calling for Reid's head and it will be the biggest BECAUSE CHIEFS of all time.

If we have HFA locked up you don't let him near the field. Period.

NE only has to lose at Pittsburgh and we have a one game cushion on them.

Not sure about tiebreakers vs. Houston in that scenario if they win the next three. I think Texans lose at Eagles. They could lose to the Colts at home this weekend.

Don't see them losing at Jets or to the suddenly pathetic Jags.

If the Chiefs go 13-2 they need both the Patriots and Texans to lose at least one game each to have the one seed locked up in the final week. At 13-3 it looks like the Texans have the tie breaker if we lose to the Raiders. If we have one loss to the Seahawks we have the tie breaker should the Chiefs and Texans finish at 13-3 if the Patriots lose one game. So in that scenario we would still need the final game against the Raiders. Quite a lot has to happen to lock up the one seed before the final game.

has their ever been a chiefs qb, that had the last week of the regular season off, have a first round bye, and won?

if not, sit him ROFL

i joke, im torn honestly... purely from injury factor, i would sit him. let's eliminate this debate, and he has it wrapped up in the second to last game :thumb:

What is the playoff and superbowl record of teams that rest their starters when locking up their playoff spot early? I've never been a fan of resting players.

suzzer99
12-07-2018, 03:03 AM
We've been to 5 playoff games in the Reid era and I'm not sure Houston has been healthy for any of them. Also Maclin was hurt for a couple. DJ got hurt right before the playoffs. And then of course every playoff game we get 2-3 concussions.

I can see why you'd want to rest people.

jaa1025
12-07-2018, 03:26 AM
Luckily for Mahomes sake, the chance the Chiefs lock up the #1 seed or even a bye going into the final week is extremely low. It's going to go down to week 17. Hell, the AFCW possibly won't be decided until week 17 if the Chiefs lose to the Chargers.

Somehow, if it did come down to that, you let Mahomes get the record. No brainer. He may never get another chance and it would top the most impressive season for a QB in history. It will also reward the rest of the offense to be a part of something this great.

Play the starters the first half. Not for the record but to keep them dialed in for the Superbowl run.

I'm going to that game, so I'd like to see him play, esp. if we are the #1 seed. 2 weeks off doesn't sit well with me.

Wouldn't sit him for the game with or without the record consideration.

If we have a bye locked up and you sit him, that's 2 weeks without game action and that's just too long for a kid that isn't going to have any familiarity with playoff football anyway.

Try to keep things as 'normal' as possible. I'd consider playing him the full game depending on how the Raiders rush is getting home. If they're not putting pressure on him, I wouldn't take him out at all.

EDIT: Everyone has already said this. I'll see myself out.
