This is what they say is their methodology:

Methodology
How do you a measure a fandom? It is no small task. The Fandom 250 has always had a scoring system and we have continued explore ways to make our system more accurate.

This year, for the first time, we are revealing the composite score our editors assigned to each fandom. We also refreshed our approach and created a more intricate scoring system. We landed on five key measures, each was assigned a number of points for a total (and perfect score) of 100:

Legacy (10 points)
Fansmanship (25 points)
Passion (25 points)
Buzz (25 points)
Magnitude (15 points)

Our staff split into committees and studied voted on the fandoms monthly to ensure that the total scores were as democratic and timely as possible. The final numbers were averaged out to be the overall score you see on the Fandom 250 today.

As for what those measures mean, we created definitions to guide and align our scoring process.

Legacy is partly about how long a fandom has existed, but more importantly, it’s about what the fandom has done with its time. What we’re valuing isn’t age so much as it is longevity and loyalty.

Fanmanship, at its core, is fans going above and beyond for their fellow fans and community, so fans who not only show love and support, but do more for the community get rewarded.

Passion is how far a fan is willing to go for their fandom.

Buzz is obvious and evident. If a player, team or entertainer has buzz, we are seeing them gain notoriety both on social channels and in mainstream media. More anecdotally, when you’re talking at work or hanging out with friends, fandoms just feel like they come up a lot.

Finally, magnitude is a measure of the fandom’s size and scope. How big is the fanbase? Is the object of the fan’s adoration inescapable? While buzz is more about what’s hot right now, magnitude is about the degree to which fandoms have remained visible and powerful over time.

Ties
While we used decimal points this year in our scoring, there were still a number of ties. Our edit team met and served as the tie breakers in these instances.

This is the Chiefs write-up:

Fandom Nickname: Chiefs Kingdom

Best Fandom Moment of the Year: The Chiefs finally have their franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, but that doesn’t mean the fanbase didn’t realize how much Alex Smith meant to the team and community. Upon his trade during Super Bowl week to the Washington Redskins, legions of Chiefs fans made donations to the Alex Smith Foundation, which helps to serve kids in the foster care system. The outpouring of support and gratitude was so profound that Smith and his wife thanked the fans prior to leaving for the nation’s capital.

While Mahomes is lighting up scoreboards for the Chiefs, Kansas City has Smith to thank for helping the rookie along in 2017, allowing him to learn under the care of a professional. The result? A really, really bright future for the team, and money in the coffers of Smith’s foundation. A win-win if there ever was one.

Fandom Legacy: The Chiefs were originally founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans in the American Football League. After winning the AFL title in 1962 over the Houston Oilers, the team packed up and moved to Kansas City, renamed the Chiefs. In an effort to sell tickets, the franchise established the Red Coaters Club, which is reserved for men and women who go around the Kansas City community and sell season tickets. Once a certain number is met, the Chiefs provide a red blazer for the fan, with the team granting the honor of being on the field as a tunnel for players to run out of during introductions.

Today, the Red Coaters remain one of the most visible groups in Kansas City, let alone with the Chiefs. In Kansas City, every football Friday is known as Red Friday, with citizens of the area encouraged to wear red in support of the team. This was started by the Red Coaters.
